  1. Claiming 100k there has to be one of my all time favorite "you've got to be fucking kidding me" wrestling claims.
  2. Unrelated, but still semi-related note - Bash at the Beach 95 was a free show right? People weren't actually paying to walk up on the beach and watch it were they?
  3. So far here are the vote totals including twitter nine for the Iron Man 1 for the MVC match 1 for Cactus v. Sting What is notable is that a couple of people who picked the Iron Man sort of implied that MVC v. Steiners would be their "other" pick. I'm hoping I get a few more thoughts in here, but by eight unless there is a large swing the other way I'm going with the Iron Man. Now everyone keep talking about the show since the thread is here.
  4. If you had to pick one match, as the main event of Beach Blast 92 what would your pick be? This is not some random off the cuff question, as it applies to a bigger (and grandiose) research project I am working on over my spring break. Here is the card: Beach Blast 92 - Mobile, AL - Civic Center - June 20, 1992 (5,000) The Junkyard Dog, Tom Zenk, & Big Josh defeated Tracy Smothers, Richard Morton, & Diamond Dallas Page Pay-per-view bouts - featured an opening segment in which Tony Schiavone & Eric Bischoff spoke with Bill Watts on the podium stage in which Watts said Paul E. Dangerously & Madusa would be banned from ringside during the Ricky Steamboat vs. Rick Rude Ironman match; included Jim Ross & Jesse Ventura on commentary; Ventura was escorted ringside before the opening contest by four women in bikinis; featured a segment in which Johnny B. Badd came out and introduced the rules for the bikini contest between Madusa and Missy Hyatt, then telling the fans they could vote by calling the WCW Hotline; Missy and Madusa then came out to show off their evening gowns; included a segment in which Badd brought Missy and Madusa out in their swimsuits; featured Bischoff conducting a podium interview with Ricky Steamboat about his win earlier in the show against WCW US Champion Rick Rude; moments later, Paul E. Dangerously interrupted and said Steamboat had already seen his last US title shot, with Cactus Jack then yanking Steamboat off the podium to the floor; the two then brawled as security intervened and held them apart; included the final contest segment between Missy and Madusa, this time with Ventura as the co-host, in which Madusa was brought out in her bikini; moments later, Missy - from within a dressing room on the set - claimed someone stole her bikini and stole Ventura's head scarves; after teasing Madusa might win the contest via forfeit, Missy came out wearing a bikini in the same design as Ventura's scarves; moments later, Badd proclaimed Missy the winner, with Madusa complaining and shoving Badd into the other dressing room; Badd later emerged holding Madusa's bikini top; it was then noted fans could still vote through midnight and the result would be announced the next day on The Main Event; featured Schiavone & Bischoff hosting the entire event from the interview platform: Scotty Flamingo pinned WCW Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Pillman to win the title at 17:28 with a knee from the middle turnbuckle after the champion failed a crossbody over the top and hit his head on the rampway Ron Simmons pinned Terry Taylor with the powerslam at 7:10; prior to the bout, Tony Schiavone mentioned Simmons received the key to the city of Tallahassee, FL earlier in the day; after the contest, Jim Ross conducted a ringside interview with Simmons in which Simmons said his goal was to be world champion and he was living proof that it doesn't matter where you come from or what your poverty level is, you can still be a success Greg Valentine defeated Marcus Alexander Bagwell via submission with the figure-4 leglock at 6:16 after dropping Bagwell onto his injured knee WCW World Champion Sting pinned Cactus Jack in a non-title falls count anywhere match at 11:23 with a clothesline from the top rope onto the rampway (Falls Count Anywhere: The Greatest Street Fights and other Out of Control Matches) Ricky Steamboat defeated WCW US Champion Rick Rude in a non-title 30-minute Ironman match at 29:59, 4-3; prior to the bout, Steamboat came to the ring with his wife and young son; fall #1: Rude pinned Steamboat with a knee to the jaw and grabbing the tights for leverage at 7:42; fall #2: Rude pinned Steamboat with the Rude Awakening at 8:39; fall #3: Rude was disqualified for coming off the top with a kneedrop at 9:40; fall #4: Rude pinned Steamboat with an inside cradle at 10:11; fall #5: Steamboat pinned Rude after reversing a tombstone piledriver into one of his own at 17:38; fall #6: Steamboat pinned Rude with a backslide at 20:21; fall #7: Steamboat pinned Rude by kicking off the turnbuckle as he was caught in a sleeper at 29:24 (Ricky Steamboat: The Life of the Dragon) Barry Windham, Dustin Rhodes, & Nikita Koloff defeated WCW TV Champion Steve Austin, Arn Anderson, & Bobby Eaton (w/ Paul E. Dangerously) via disqualification at 15:31 when referee Ole Anderson stopped the match after seeing Arn come off the top with a double axe handle to Windham, moments after Windham hit a superplex on Austin from the middle turnbuckle; prior to the bout, an on screen graphic noted the referee was "Olie Anderson;" during the contest, it was noted Madusa was beating Missy, 51% to 49% in the WCW Hotline poll; after the match, Rhodes, Windham, & Koloff cleared the ring of their opponents WCW Tag Team Champions Rick & Scott Steiner fought Steve Williams & Terry Gordy to a 30-minute time-limit draw just as Scott hit the Frankensteiner on Gordy Normally my default answer would be either the last match on, or the world title match, but I think you can make a strong case for Steamboat v. Rude. Let's see if PWO can help me choose just one
  5. I agree with both Will and Childs point on Punk. Ultimately if Punk pulled a Jack Brisco and never comes back I think it will help his "legacy" in the sense that he will be viewed as this guy who didn't compromise and stayed "above it all" or some such shit. If he does come back I think it will only increase his standing as a historic figure (he will be booked well if this happens), but it will take away from some of the mystique if that makes sense. It certainly seems like Punk will be the last true star made before the Network (you can argue Bryan, but Bryan's peak is likely to come in the Network Era), and you wonder how the new era would have changed his standing.
  6. Well everything on there I thought was at least pretty good. I thought you had stuff like Cesaro v. Regal way too low, but I admit that's a match that is not necessarily going to jump off the page for everyone.

The Bryan v. HHH match does not "work" as a match unless HHH is willing to show a ton of ass, and lose in a virtual squash. Bryan winning an "epic" against HHH is not likely to have the desired effect for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that no one is ever better off after working HHH on his terms

Keep in mind that even I don't particularly want to see a Christian v. Sheamus feud

The idea that everyone gives those two that reaction is transparently wrong

They've had tv angles to set up there matches and have not gotten a reaction like this at all elsewhere. I love Cesaro, but his match with Big E was the epitome of throwaway trash and it got a huge response for obvious reasons

That Sheamus v. Christian match might be the best match I've ever seen get completely shit on. Sheamus is seen as a machine guy and is screwed in front of these indie smark fetish crowds.

I just hope Rollins isn't going heel. Having said that I loved that match

I have had the weird feeling all day that Punk would show up and turn heel. There is no logical reason for this to happen, but it's something I can't shake
  15. I have assumed it will be Cesaro v. Swagger for the I-C belt since last weeks Raw. I think Sheamus will team with Big E against Christian and Del Rio.
  16. My thought is that is an interesting metric that might be worth applying other things.

As ppv's become more and more a part of the Network and less and less an outside element of the business plan, it is arguable that the company will put less and less stock in them in terms of building them, executing all major storylines built around them, doing most title switches on them, et. In the "content era" there may be a leveling out effect where all content is presented at roughly the same level.

This is the first truly "Network Era" Raw. The fact that they are loading up this show interests me because I think it could potentially suggest some long term changes in the presentation of the t.v. shows that go hand in hand with ppv's being "free" for network subscribers.
  19. Disagreed with a ton of it, but a fun read and a great resource for the future. I was pleasantly surprised to see that awesome Sheamus v. Barrett main event match pop up so high.
  20. I almost watched Sin myself tonight, watched Starrcade 2000 instead.
  21. This does a lot to illustrate the perceived value of Patera. He sticks out like sore thumb when you are looking at the paydays of guys not booked last.

Vince's slip'n'slide tope over the announce table is the greatest spot in wrestling history

Batista v. Orton v. Punk is less appealing to me personally than Batista v. Orton
  24. Tajiri is the most successful in history in the sense that he was around forever, at points reasonably well booked, and though never a main eventer, there were points where he wasn't purely a jobber either. I suppose you could argue Saito as a better pick if you go far enough back

I'm not saying they are the only reason for it, but I think it is possible that their success in that model has contributed to the huge number of multi-man tags we get now
