  1. Is that your finisher? "The Texan Rib" Everyone knows in Texas, a rib isn't a joke... it's dinner. Plus, my finisher would be the Belt Buckle. Since you are from Texas I thought it would be an intestinal virus, toxic shock syndrome or and indictment for possession of pain killers Post of The Decade If I challenged the legitimacy of this statement, would you secede from the board? Not sure if this is a joke about my Quebec wrestling fetish vis a vis Mad Dog Lefevbre and Pat's new book, my politics, or my geographical location. In any event the answer is no. I am a free speech absolutist even when it's wrong.
  2. Eaton was an outstanding wrestler. I think the consensus is that he was washed up by the time the Nitro era hit but I'm not sure that's true. Yes the Blue Bloods were extremely disappointing as a team and I'm sure he had slipped, but I suspect a lot of the stuff after that was weaker because of the chances he was given (not many). At his best (84-92?) he was right near the top of the list for U.S. workers. When I was thinking about my top ten U.S. guys ever I gave him consideration though I think he falls slightly outside of it. Great brawler, excellent big punches, tremendous highspots, good stooging, great at selling big spots or long term exhaustion, very good timing, dynamic, innovative in a good way, knew how to pace a match and work different speeds...not a lot of weaknesses at all. Yeah he's bland on the surface, but in the ring he was anything but. I don't think he's a better tag wrestler than Ricky Morton though.
  3. I know there are a few Rockers matches during their AWA stint where they worked other promotions with the belts. I THINK one was in Bama. Khawk would know. In any event I need to watch that stuff
  4. Are there filters on PWO? Either way I'm really confused... No. There is literally a strange edit on the tape to some movie with Jennifer Lopez talking in the background about being in peril
  5. Bockwinkel vs Ernie Ladd October 1978. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrjz6WJGAtA I thought what was shown of this was very good and suspect this is the majority of the match with stalling, selling and a few other things taken out. In an case it's too incomplete to put on something like a DVDVR Set, but there is more than enough here to assess the positives. Bock's pre-match sauntering around is great stuff. Where Flair makes you believe that he thinks he is better than you because of his wealth, materialism, et, Bock makes you think he's better than you because he's smarter than you. Here he carries himself like he's the smartest guy on Earth. I think the comp to an Andre match is very fitting and I thought Bock's big full body bumping and the way he was really ramming home on the leg on the apron got over that he was working against a really big dude. In general I think Bock's ways of reacting to different situations is one of his strengths and seeing him in this setting adds another dimension to that. Doesn't look like Ladd was selling the leg a whole lot, but other than that what was shown was good stuff even with the bullshit finish. Bockwinkel v. Da Crusher - Cage Match 2/79 (?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4nENzt1_68 This is a little over five minutes of a match that went about 12 and a half minutes. Also, IIRC khawk says the correct date on this is 1980. Whatever the case may be it's a shame this isn't complete, because the five minutes we get is about as good a singles match as you are going to get out of old man Crusher. Bockwinkel is an absolute bump freak in this careening wildly into the cage, taking big bumps off the ropes, contorting himself crazily in the ropes off of kick offs, et. Crusher actually sells more than normal when Bock is on offense and I was impressed with how hard he appeared to be working. A stomp off the top and rope running exchange really doesn't seem like a lot, but for a guy his age/size it was impressive. I also liked the finish. Seriously good stuff. Bockwinkel v. Dick The Bruiser - WWA 9/6/80 This is not an AWA match, but instead is from Bruiser's promotion in Indy. This is all about Bock working his game plan, which is a strength of his. Bock is a guy who will tailor offense and modes of attack and here he hones in on Bruiser's back/mid section early and sticks with it throughout. We get a weird edit with a Jennifer Lopez in peril voiceover and another patchy segment on the video, but this is pretty close to complete. Dick's selling sucks, but when Bock was on offense this was still pretty good because of how focused he was. Kidney punches on both sides, backbreaker, nice looking body scissors where he worked himself way from Bruiser' punch attempts, tree of woe spot with knees, et. Bruiser's comeback actually worked pretty good because it was gradual and Bock even tossed out a body shot to counter his momentum to no avail. Problem is Bruiser's offense sucks so even though Bock's bumping was really good, you can't really buy it. The ref did get killed on the screwjob finish though. Worth watching as an example of Bock the strategist, but not as a particularly good match.
  6. Why the hell did you watch a best of RVD comp? Fuck if every Lynn match was like that I wouldn't want to see him either.
  7. Would it be too much to ask for a top ten? I'm curious to see where Eaton, Satanico, Lawler and Waltman would fall
  8. I would rather listen to Swans, Amps For Christ, Moss Icon, Karate and any other number of random bands that the average person probably doesn't know. I think Shotmaker's Mouse Ear Forget Me Not is the best album I've ever heard. I think Lucero is easily the best band of the last fifteen years. Not all of that is obscure (although most of my favorites are) and I like a lot of pop music, but generally I don't care about listening to pop standards. The exception is Motown. But I do enjoy New Order
  9. I was named after Bob Dylan, but I like Phil Ochs better as a songwriter from that era. I will not discuss The Beatles as I don't want Will to have a stroke.
  10. Leo Burke v. TNT - 1990 I am not Dave Musgrave, but I do enjoy Leo Burke. In general I am a fan of journeyman types, that show up a lot of places and seem to fit well everywhere they go. On paper this looked like it could be pretty good, but because of a commercial break edit and weird structure it was more entertaining than anything. I do like Leo's offense and his heeling, but I wasn't overly impressed with TNT and the finish with Colon was bullshit. Still the randomness of WWC is always appealing.
  11. Billy Joe Travis v. Huracan Castillo Jr - Scaffold Match 1990 This sucked but I couldn't not watch it because of how random it was. It looks like there is at least one other BJT match from PR which is good because that's really what I was looking for. Mostly notable for how wide and high up the Scaffold was. And BJT's dancing.

  13. As a straight edge guy, how would you know if Milwaukee's Best is shit? I am straight edge guy who toured with shitty punk bands filled with alcoholics, career criminals and degenerates from the time I was 14 til the time I was twenty. I know more about bad beer and hard drugs than most rednecks/junkies.
  14. This is neither here nor there, but Paul Jones Army/Jimmy Valiant feud was insanely over. Where I live it is not uncommon to run into nascar hat wearing, subcontractor fan, who can tell you more about that feud than they could about anything that happened in the WWF. That feud headlined or was near top of a lot of smaller high school shows.
  15. I've seen all of those matches. No clue what is great about Taker/HHH from storytelling perspective. I mean I liked The Green Mile fine, but HHH is a really shitty John Coffey
  16. I had a thread where I reviewed/talked about WWC before, but I think it was on the old SC board. In any event this will be the catchall thread for wrestling from Puerto Rico Stan Hansen v. Carlos Colon - Cage Match 1987 I thought this was an outstandingly great match. This is the sort of match that really bolsters the case for Hansen as a GOATC. I have no clue how regularly he was working WWC at this point, but he is crazy over here and of course Colon is like god on the island. Colon ambushes him as he is nervous about even getting into the cage and they proceed to have a sub-fifteen minute brawl that has all the staples you want. Hansen was really great here selling the blood loss and Colon legwork by just stumbling around clutching onto to shit to survive. I thought the transitions in this were really great for a brawl of this sort. There is a fun visual spot with both guys brawling while on the top rope which led to a great re-set and at one point Colon hits this reckless headbutt where he sort of flings himself at Hansen's head that looked absolutely brutal. Hansen eventually takes off the boot in desperation and starts whacking Colon with it, but it ends up coming back to bite him as he is trapped bare footed in the figure-four. Meanwhile a huge brawl breaks out on the floor and Colon walks out the front door to join it while the crowd goes batshit insane. Awesome stuff.
  17. It depends on the matches you are talking about.
  18. Lawler/Snowman is under five and is a great match. Brad Armstrong v. Vader is awfully close to a great match if not a great match and that's under five. I think Funk v. Eddie is a great match and that's right at five minutes.
  19. To me a great match is a great match. At my ages the idea that a longer match is innately more deserving of that label than a short one seems insane. Some of my favorite matches are fifteen minutes or less. The match in question is one of them and is my number two on the AWA Set
  20. Loss GOAT Bar was great for a long time, but there were several years where it only served Milwaukee's Best
  21. I've been talking about this sort of thing with Exposer some over the last few days. I think on his list he came up with sixteen or so goes who he could reasonably argue as contenders for the top spot. With me it's weird because I feel like there are a lot of guys I would consider for the top ten (upwards of forty maybe even), but for the absolute top spot I'm not sure I could name ten people I would consider that strongly. Having said that virtually everyone I would consider a top ten contender is someone where if they showed up as someones number one I wouldn't think it that odd.
  22. Was looking for something totally unrelated today and found this Carlos Colon v. Greg Valentine Cage Match from 1991 First five minutes or so is missing which is too bad because this is really good. Escape the cage rules but they make the most out of things and I thought the way both guys cut off the other worked well. Both guys bleed, Valentine takes some great bumps, and the match has a good flow to it. I also thought the finish was really clever. This was Valentine past his prime, but it's hard to imagine anyone having a better match with Colon in 91.
  23. Not that this sort of cynicism is unwarranted, but it wouldn't shock me if Backlund was on the planned list this year all along.
  24. I gotta tell ya though, if you were 13 like me and my pals were at the time, when the Bulldogs first started appearing on Saturday Morning TV? Shit, man. They were fucking awesome. You don't think about or even notice shit like, "They're unprofessional and stiff for no reason" at that age. All we thought at the time was these guys were fast, did awesome moves, beat people up, and were in awesome shape. Now, that's not a defense. Looking back, you think "They didn't need to be so rough on job guys" and you realize how over rated they are. BUT, that initial feeling they gave you at the time was fucking cool. It was why we all marked out so much when the won the belts at Mania 2. You just described how I felt as a nine year old watching Steiners matches.
