    Wrestlemania 37

They didn't put him over that strongly. He had to be bailed out by his lackey.
  2. Somebody rip off a pimping post on Okabayashi at some point. What little I've seen didn't make a GWE-type impression, but I'm weak on that strain of modern Japanese wrestling.
  3. Why would he need hidden gems though? I could see some people refusing to vote for him because of out-of-ring stuff and some younger voters choosing not to engage, but I see no reason to reconsider his in-ring legacy. He was the best local ace ever.
  4. I've come around on Tanahashi since the last time we did this, largely because he's done such a good job working around his declining physical tools. I find brokedown Tana more compelling than the ace who was fighting to hold off Okada. I also found his early work surprisingly good when I went back to watch some of the G1s and other shows from NJPW's "dark" years. He was way more interesting than Nakamura.

    Daniel Bryan

A lot of his New Japan stuff is on tape. Might have to take a look at that sometime during this project, just to see how he fit in a very different role. I feel like I've also seen a few of those British matches against Doug Williams and Robbie Brookside, though I don't remember where. I'm comfortable saying he was a great wrestler in 2003 based on his ROH matches against London and Styles, but I don't think it will go down as one of his banner years.

    Rick Martel

Agreed, I just figure if you're only going to watch six, might want to see him work a singles match in Japan.

    Manami Toyota

This is a good point to keep in mind. I guess my take is that Toyota did more, more, more of everything, so the flaws of the style feel more magnified with her. As we discussed in the 2016 portion of this thread, you can make a strong argument that she deserves as much credit for her ambition as she does criticism for her excesses.

    Chigusa Nagayo

Chigusa is solidly on the list of wrestlers I regret omitting the last time around. I need to take a fresh spin through '80s Joshi to figure out where to situate those workers. I think Masami was the only one who made my final 100, which feels wrong.
  10. I was baffled by the folks who declared it a negative, draining experience in the immediate aftermath (not you Steven; I understand your POV). The GWE years were the most fun I had on this board, and I'm hoping the 2026 go-round will nudge me to re-engage. There was a natural exhale at the end of it and a sense that a lot of conversations had culminated. But I was always sorry that it turned into a gloomy slog for some, because it was the opposite for me.
  11. I agree with you. Even though it was frustrating to watch the disconnects between the discussion and the broader vote, I would still prefer to leave the door open. We just need to do everything possible to bring people into the discussion, because that's what endures.
  12. The thing I liked least about 2016 were all the randos who voted after not participating in any of the discussion. But I'm not sure what you do about that; I wouldn't want to see onerous requirements that might dissuade fresh outlooks.
  13. I'll take part of the responsibility for the '80s Joshi set breaking down. I found the footage amazing to watch in bursts but difficult to plow through week after week. I'm not sure why; perhaps I'd feel differently now. But I can attest to everything Steven is saying about Hokuto; her work jumped out almost as soon as she appeared on tape. It's still a shortish run for an all-time great, but it's not like you're left with a lot of questions about what she could do.
  14. Punk was an actual match. So it's more than two but fewer than a dozen.
  15. That sucked.
  16. I hate these all-finisher Lesnar matches. He's capable of so much better.
  17. That was phenomenal. As with the boneyard, so many leaps past a straight match between those two.
  18. Even Meltzer, an Edge mark, called this a "failure of the editing process at a level I've never seen before."
  19. The art of brawling is lost in most of modern wrestling. They should all be forced to watch tapes of '80s Puerto Rico with their eyes pinned open.
  20. Edge-Orton is the drizzling shits. This show has gone straight downhill since the excellent opener.
  21. I was pretty skeptical upon seeing the initial wave of enthusiasm about the boneyard match, but that shit was a hoot. Overall show was far from a disaster. The elite workers such as Bryan and Asuka stood out even more in the empty-arena setting. The Becky-Baszler match hit the right notes. I skipped the ladder match and about half of Rollins-Owens, and I probably won't go back to those. But I left happy enough that I'll watch "live" tomorrow night. Went back to watch Cesaro-Gulak and that was terrific while it lasted. They came up with some really inventive counters while keeping things nasty.

    AEW Full Gear

I went to the show and did not see or hear a lot of negative reaction to Omega-Moxley in our section. There was a lot of, "Oh God, what are they going to do next?" But they didn't lose the crowd, despite the length and the kickouts. Though it's not my favorite kind of wrestling, I appreciated their commitment. They envisioned a particular kind of spectacle and went all in to create it. The show as a whole was quite good. My 10-year-old went with me at the last minute (I was not expecting to give him a crash intro to death matches, but so it goes), and though he's not hugely into wrestling, he stayed engaged for the entire four hours.
  23. Ishii-White was easily MOTN for a generally unremarkable Day 4. They're a natural match-up -- Mr. Bullshit vs. Mr. No Bullshit. I didn't mind the Moxley finish in the sense that I think he's a guy who should be able to end matches unexpectedly. But I agree he and Cobb left something on the table. I don't hate Taichi, but that match never grabbed me and never felt like a main event, despite the surprise ending. Still waiting for the breakout show or match in this tournament.
  24. Night 3 was not as good as it looked on paper. Ospreay and Sanada didn't have much chemistry, despite their superior athleticism. Have no idea what put KENTA-Tanahashi in MOTY territory for NintendoLogic. Didn't think it carried the intensity needed for that, though it was fine. Okada-ZSJ was MOTN for me. I liked the decision to streamline their usual formula, and I always feel Sabre's style makes it harder for Okada to revert to his generic layout. I also believed either guy could win. I'm still waiting for a match to kick this G1 to the next level. So far, we're cruising along in the middle gears.
  25. That match had plenty of good stuff in it, but it was too damn long.
