  1. Well ok, cheerleading was me trying to exaggerate to make a point. When VKM was taking the company national, it seemed clear that Dave did not like the product nor did he think what Vince was doing was good for the business. Now that may be due to his sources in the territories bitching about Vince taking their talent/TV time/whatever, but once the writing was on the wall that Vince's way was the long term winner he changed his tune about WWF wrestling. Maybe that was due to WMIII proving they could have quality wrestling when they wanted to, maybe Dave just smartened up that the territory guys were trying to work him, who knows. As far as the "WWF hating" I referred to, it sometimes came across like Dave was more interested in if these scandals were going to put Vince out of business instead of the fact he was employing a known pedophile for years. Also his obsession with the Gulf War angle with Sgt. Slaughter was a bit overblown. Yes it was a stupid and tasteless angle, but Dave devoted several issues almost entirely to this as if Vince had him out there shitting on the American flag. There was a good stretch of at least 3 years where he was just hammering everything WWF did.
  2. How could Meltzer think Rhodes was a bad interview? Hell his famous "Hard Times" promo was in 1985. Granted he hadn't done it at the time of this issue, but still.
  3. So I was at my wife's cousin's wedding on Saturday, and she's kind of a hippie chick who had mostly 60s-70s music for the reception. In fact, the song they chose to play for their entrance into the reception hall was Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). Thankfully I was able to resist the urge to take my belt off and play air guitar.
  4. That's so bizarre considering he's probably spent most of his life in either Texas or Japan, which are two of the most conservative areas you could find.
  5. Of course there is the possibility that PWInsider was wrong and/or someone worked them to SWERVE~! the internet.
  6. I think a lot of it is that WWE guys get it drilled into their heads by management (ie: Vince or one of his sockpuppets) that Democrats are going to tax their income away, so most of them believe it or at least would not want to say anything contrary on the record and end up giving the boss a reason to dislike you.
  7. Ronnie was always a guy you could tell that they wanted to have in their back pocket as someone they could plug in the main event, and it seemed like he was over enough after the angle with Jim Cornette throwing fire at him (that turned Jimmy Garvin face to come to the aid of his "brother"), but I think the fans liked Flair more and didn't want to see him lose the belt. I still wonder if no one else wanted to do the job, why couldn't they have had a few matches with Flair where Garvin either gets some wins due to interference backfiring or having Jimmy come out to neutralize JJ or something like that? It's not like Flair ever had a problem putting over a guy for a while if he was going to get the belt back at some point.
  8. Well Bischoff did learn at the foot of Verne Gagne, and I think it's pretty well known what he thought of the colored folks. Also I wouldn't rule out him wanting to stay on WWE's good side too. He's a guy who wouldn't want to burn the one bridge left if he ever felt like getting back in the business. As far as Joey goes, I can buy him being legit conservative, but to suddenly start airing his views on a public forum like that just makes me think he found a way to get over with the bosses. Also lol @ him having a serious argument over anything with Balls.
  9. In J.J. Dillon's book, he explains that another part of the rationale for putting the belt on Garvin was to headline with Flair-Garvin title matches everywhere to differentiate their brand of wrestling from WWF with credible, hard-hitting main events. If that was the plan, then why did they put Garvin on ice until Starrcade and make him an obvious placeholder champ to everyone? What stopped them from having a few matches around the horn to at least make Garvin more than the NWA's version of Stan Stasiak?
  10. I don't agree with his views, but I love how Glen Jacobs has two alter egos: Kane and his "Citizen X" libertarian blogger persona, and it seems no one who's a fan of one is even aware of the existence of the other.
  11. I think it's widely known that Bryan Danielson is a pretty liberal guy.
  12. Joey runs .com Which explains why he needs to suck up to Vince, being in charge of .com has been like being the drummer in Spinal Tap.
  13. Yeah, it's such a 180 from his usual style, not to mention it's hard to imagine such a legit hard core conservative republican would have spent so many years in the original ECW. I mean, if his current feelings are legit you'd think he'd be upset about Paul E. getting a bailout from Vince? It seems like such an obvious kiss ass attempt you'd think that's the kind of thing that usually pisses Vince off. From the way it was written it certainly seemed like whoever Dave's source is felt it was a work too.
  14. Guys (other than the very top card) in Mexico seem to go from promotion to promotion pretty regularly, and AAA seems to want to put as many guys on the TripleMania card as possible since it's their big show. It stands to reason if CMLL wanted to be dicks, the next time an AAA guy wants to jump ship they could be SOL if they work the show with Santo.
  15. I'm sure most people here are aware of how Joey Styles is suddenly going around posting extreme (no pun intended) right wing political statements on his Twitter account, most of then bashing Obama with the same kind of stuff you probably found in your inbox leading up to the election. Without getting into a debate on the merits of his views, the mention in the WON about how this has got Joey back in Vince's good graces (Surprise! Vince is apparently a right winger too which should be a shock to approximately no one) made me wonder if this whole Joey Styles: Attack Twitter-er deal isn't a work designed to enhance his job security. I have no way of confirming or denying that the views he's posting about are legitimately his or not, it just struck me as odd that he's never been an overtly vocal guy about these kind of things and suddenly he starts going around sounding like he's auditioning to be a fill in host for Rush Limbaugh. I'd hate to think he's smart enough to not be one of those white dudes who got all shook over having a black president, but it's kind of what it comes off like reading his posts. It did cause Jim Cornette of all people (who I'd never have expected to have such opinions in these matters) to cut a full on classic promo on him and if nothing else I really want to see a Cornette-Styles grudge match now. (link to said twittering here. )
  16. So does CMLL still ban guys who work the same shows as Santo from working for them? Cause like the whole AAA roster is fucked if they do.
  17. I always felt it was a bit disingenuous of Meltzer to start warming up to the WWF right around the time it was clear the territories were circling the bowl and WWF was going to end up the only real national company. I mean, I guess he was just protecting his livelyhood and all that, but it was kind of funny to see him going from go from just hating on anything they were doing to practically cheerleading for them. Of course with the drug/sex scandals in the 90s there was a brief return of WWF hating Dave, but as soon as it became clear they weren't going to destroy the company (and that WCW was never going to get out of their own way and take the opportunity given to them to blow past the WWF) it was back to "they aren't so bad I guess" Dave.
  18. The Monday Night Wars shows On Demand just started into 1998 and it's so painfully obvious that A: The fans were dying for even a brief Owen run as champ to get revenge for Montreal and B: DX was going to make sure that didn't happen for the same reason. I've never been a guy to get all hot and bothered over backstage POLITIXXX, but watching these shows with the knowledge of why certain things did or didn't happen makes me kind of mad.
  19. Adding to the Solie discussion, he was supposed to be at his best in Florida but everything I've seen of him there it's like having Ben Stein call matches. I get that he's not the Don West/Jim Ross "BAH GAWD" type, but at times it comes off like he's reading off a card with no emotion whatsoever.
  20. I'm pretty sure that Owen was winding down at the time of his accident, didn't Vince or someone in the company have to talk him into staying after the Montreal stuff? Between that and the political situation I don't see him getting a world title run.
  21. Yeah I don't get how he thinks that it was such a slam dunk certain thing. It seems like he bases it on the idea that since the titles changed so frequently in the Russo era that he would have got it eventually, but even with all the frequent switches it was only really between a handful of guys (Rock, Austin, Foley, Taker) with guys like Kane occasionally as transition champs. Not to speak ill, but Owen was clearly pegged as midcard for life at the time of his accident. Even if there was a chance he would have been considered at any point, surely the influence of HBK and HHH would have made sure he would have never got above IC level at best.
  22. I don't think there's a need for a debate either, I was just pointing out that Keith does not seem to see a connection between the use of steroids and the rash of injuries in WWE.
  23. In response to someone sending a YouTube link to the Larry Z commercial for Morphoplex where he denounces steroid use: Once again all the time honored Scooter techniques are apparent: 1. Ignoring the obvious and believing John Cena is 100% clean and just a genetic freak (who happens to get the same kind of muscle tears as users of products that artificially inflate muscles). 2. Missing the forest for the trees by stating injuries are a bigger problem in wrestling than steroids. Yes, guys get hurt on bumps and falling off ladders and what have you, but most of the main eventers that have missed significant time did so because of muscle tears that are a almost always a sign of some kind of muscle enhancement. 3. He could defend it as a generic term rather than a specific name, but continually referring to "steroids" confuses the issue since most users in tested sports stopped using actual steroids in the late 80s/early 90s/whenever their sport started getting really good at testing. Most big name users switched to growth hormone, which is why no one gets caught failing for actual enhancers in baseball and why there's so many heart failure deaths in wrestling. It's also why most wrestlers can honestly say they don't do actual steroids, they just have more hormones in their medicine cabinet than a person going through gender reassignment. 4. Dismissive smarter-than-the-room comment at the the end, as if it was a waste of his time to even respond to the guy.
