going through old tapes of mine, converting stuff to DVD and ran across this. Got a big kick out of the fact that like 10+ years ago I did the exact same thing you guys did and cut out everything except the last few mins and the post match angle. Now i'm curious to go track down the full thing to see if it was really that bad. It's rather amazing that they didn't realise how stupid Farooq's gear (or atleast the helmet) was until after he debued with it.

Not much to add that hasn't been said yet, def agree that they were having a damn good match before the big angle went down. Yay for Mongo not screwing things up as much and actually looking kinda decent this week, even his nutty rope running fail didn't seem so bad. We all know Evolution was HHH's attempt to copy the Horsemen but it suddenly just now dawned on me that they were a total rip off or atleast most similar to this version of the Horsemen. Mongo = Batista

Yeah, this. Backlund feud produced some great matches. I don't recall if the matches delivered in the ring but I dug the Lawler feud. Owen & Bret vs The Steiners was in 94. Bret vs Nash 6/161994 i'd call great, he has another Nash singles match ealier in the year that I recall being really good. Speaking of which Little surprised that people aren't higher on this . For me i'd legit have it in my top 100 fave matches ever. HBK/Jarrett on the other hand I never enjoyed that much or atleast not to the lvl most people here seem to. Entirely possible i'd like it more today if I rewatched it as it's been a few years but the previous few times I watched I came away thinking it was good but nothing special. Michaels & Austin vs Owen & Bulldog in 97. More in the good then great pile but i'll bring up HBK/Austin vs LOD from either the week before or week after this. I'd have to re-watch to rank it properly but Michaels vs Austin in 97 deserves a mention atleast I think And just completely random, I have foggy memories of a damn good HBK vs Rad Radford tv match from I want to say 95.

Only covers 2 years and not that many people voted so not a huge sampling of taste (though a surprising # of ppl that participated are now posting here) but I went back and checked the Smark's Choice best wrestler of 05 & 06 poll results Eliminating the international guys The top 10 US guys for 05 were from lowest to highest Danielson HHH Shelton Benoit Styles HBK Angle Rey Eddie Joe Joe, Eddie & Rey were 1, 2 & 3 overall respectivly, Angle was 5 with Kobashi in the #4 slot The top 10 for 06 were Nigel Cena Angle Regal Benoit Rey Edge Danielson Joe Finlay Finlay got #2 overall including 2 #1 votes and only lost out to Takeshi Morishima by 6 points

Thinking about it, i'm surprised Shawn Michaels name hasn't come up yet In a decade whear there may be stronger competition for a top spot i think he has a better case for best of the 00's then he does the 90's actually
-
Yeah, Rey & Danielson are easy top picks, after that i'll have to give it more thought.
-
Meh, for better or worse it's nature of the beast in these types of discussions a lot of the time. You can enjoy someone and when asked about them say largely nothing but positive things about their work and no one would think twice about it but in the context of "were they in the top _" things sometimes get taken more negatively if you say that they aren't.
-
I sort of agree. There's a lot of people who fall into the catagory of "better then the amount of great matches may indicate". I've been thinking a lot about Regal lately in that for a guy who's widely considered one of the most talented wrestlers ever and has been working reg in the US big leauges for near 20 years his list of 4*+ MOTYC lvl matches isn't all that big. That said, you're selling a lot of people short by generalising to that degree as there's def some guys, including Bret, that I think have a large enough volume of great stuff to back up their case. I really liked Flair/Bret in 98 at Sold Out Good point, aside from the IWA Light Weight title tournament in 99 that had the whacky mix of M-Pro, US Indy, WWF & ECW guys being involved (perhaps the most awesome looking on paper shows that failed miserably in execution to have ever taken place) i've never seen anything from Puerto Rico for the entire decade and have heard little to no talk of it anywhear.
-
So how about the Steiners as a team? I know there's some ppl that aren't a big fan of their style around here but if you dig what they did they had a good 6 or so years of quality stuff
-
Yup Nope. He did pin him the first week though, 2nd week was DQ win. Either way didn't stop Arn from rubbing in for quite a while afterwards if i'm remembering correctly.
-
Ah, gotcha, been a since I watched it, should prob give that 1 re-watch then since I remember very little about the Fall Brawl match. 1 last moment to bring up just since we're on the subject. The time Arn beat Hogan 2 weeks in a row in early 96 is up thear with like the greatest things ever too, especially the 1st week since the match was real good and the clebration afterwards is priceless
-
Naw there were a few others 10/2/95 on Nitro which is really good 10/9/95 Cage Match, only goes a few mins, more of an angle to lead to Sting/Flair vs Arn/Pillman the following week, still awesome though. May have been more besides this but i'm blanking at the moment
-
There were a couple Arn vs Flair matches, any specific one you're talking about? I'll also toss out the Arn/Flair vs Vader handicap match that set up the Flair vs Arn feud as another real good one from this time frame.
-
True That said, Glen Jacobs had allready kinda stunk for a while before then anyways. I recall like 1 good Isac Yankem match vs Bret in the cage on RAW and that's about it. Don't see a ton of praise getting thrown around for his SMW run, outside of the novelty factor I didn't much dig him vs Ikeda in that 1 PWFG match.
-
It's either one of the ex WWE writers like Court Bauer or maybe Dutch Mantel? Jerry Jarret doesn't watch WWE that much, doubt he pays any attention to ROH either. None of the other former bookers that I know Dave talks with like Cornette, Heyman, Gabe, etc.. fit the bill on this one either
-
So what was up with Ventura on commentary during this match? He was always a big Blonds fan and I fig Cornette/Bodies would be right up his alley too but instead he gets in a lot of jokes at their (and SMW's) exspense. The line about hearing someone herded all of Cornette's money away was pretty funny.
-
I'm a big fan of 95 WCW myself Arn vs Flair feud Savage vs Flair feud Diff combinations of Arn/Flair/Sullivan vs Hogan/Savage/Sting, Luger being mixed up in thear Eddy/Dean/Benoit first showing up Sabu's random few week run WCW vs New Japan Fun year
-
Man, I was so sad when I found that out, like a kid finding out Santa's not real It's been confirmed by a few people he's worked with, most notably Mikey Whipwreck in 1 of the interviews he did on F4W. Can't see any reason why he would make up the story. As a kid I was 100% convinced him & Dustin were going to be future WCW world champs. Dustin more then Austin actually. Still wonder sometimes how things would have shaken out had Hogan & his crew not come in in 94.
-
To be fair, that is one of the worst matches every person involved has had. Not a match anyone is going to point to as a + when making a case for any of em.

A lot of other people mentioned in this thread feel like guys who in an individual year I could see ahead of Bret but not when looking at the entire decade. I think consistency & longevity are the 2 big things that put Hart over the top for a case like this. I kinda look at him the same way I view Manami Toyota in that regard. Wrestlers whear there's very few times whear I would point to them as the absolute #1 best but they were always in the top handfull for an extremely long time. I'd also have Austin, Foley, Shawn, Benoit & Eddy up thear too in that category
-
......yeah, now whear will our unwarranted comments go?

On the subject of WoS, the assortment of random dudes that passed through is pretty interesting. Al Hayes, Kamala working as Missisipi Mauler, Akira Maeda, Satoru Sayama, Liger, Masakatu Funaki, Owen Hart, Smith Hart, Ross Hart & Bret Hart, etc.. Searching around saw Sheik Adnan Alkaissy worked over thear. Gonna have to check out that match soon. Also saw that Kamala wrestled Big Daddy but sadly i've had zero luck finding that match online so far.
-
Re Big Daddy - I like him myself, atleast in small doses. Think his act works better in tags whear he can just come in and clean house at the end. Rollerball Mark Rocco & Banger Tony Walsh vs Big Daddy & Kid Chocolate is a fun example Re Saint - Watched his match vs Steve Grey that's up on that youtube channel last night (the most recent match uploaded so easy to find). Saint is the World LW champ, Grey is the British LW champ, Grey beat him a few months earlier in a non title match, this is the re-match & also non title, Grey will most likely get a world title shot if he wins again, simple but cool little story. Action was great, the 1st round built around Grey doing a ton of crazy fast paced reversals trying to escape an arm bar only to be locked back in was awesome, the kind of stuff you watch and are shocked no one's ripped off. Saint's a guy with a rep for being kinda samey after a while which I think is a little unfair so I also dug that this showed him in a diffrent role then he usually plays as he was subtel heel here. Didn't do anything evil or rulebreaking but he was the less flashy, more agressive, older higher ranked star going against the younger, faster undedog so he wasn't cheered quite as much and even got a few seconds of boos when he turned up the roughness a little later in the match. Unless something's changed (I haven't paid attention in a while) there were always plans to do a DVDVR 80's Wos/Europe set eventually I think. Course, I actually like the 70's stuff slightly better then the 80's so that would leave a lot of great stuff out but still...
