  1. Goldberg is so over at this point it's crazy. The fans shot out of their seats when he hit that first spear. Quite the contrast to the tiresome main event scene. Raven has a cup of coffee as a transitional champion with Goldberg taking out the whole flock. Not a proper match per se, but it got the job done. Putting the US title on him was the right step at this time.
  2. If you think this is disgusting just wait for Hogan's next world title win. I don't even know where to start with this, it's awful in so many ways.
  3. An overbooked clusterfuck with crap action, assorted bullshit, swerves and most importantly a POLE. You may have hated it, but this is Vince Russo dreamland.
  4. Thankfully Sting had forgotten about Savage and Nash costing him the World Title when he joined the Wolfpac 6 weeks after this.
  5. Whilst this was all really good, I think the McMahon power walk making it's debut was the best part of all. There's only one man in the world who walks like that.
  6. Until the abrupt finish I had no idea it was a shoot. Thanks for the background information Tim, I was wondering why this was on the set.
  7. I'd nearly always condemn fans attacking wrestlers, but breaking Raven's mic deserves a medal.
  8. My guilty pleasure is imitating wrestler hand signals and mannerisms whilst watching. Having an interactive element is more fun than just sitting there. I'm viewing '98 stuff at the moment so there's plenty of NWO and DX material. And the People's Eyebrow is a good one, especially as not everyone can do it. Plus there's always favourites like Hulk Hogan, Stan Hanson, Jumbo Tsuruta and Lucha referees signalling a submission. I usually just beat them to it.
  9. Whilst he's facing eternally stiff competition in the wrestling world for worst haircut, I think that Jacques deserves a mention here for his bald ponytail style.
  10. Is there an actual pro wrestling rule book for any promotion? I always think of it as a mythical object. The OTT DQ rule always sucked. It was a lame finish when used intentionally, and then there's all the times it was done by accident and the ref had to turn a blind eye as it wasn't the planned finish. Agreed that the ref kicking the wrestlers hands away from the rope is really irritating. Another thing that always bugs me is the ref counting down the shoulders during a figure-four leglock. No downward pressure is being applied to the torso of the opponent, so he's not being pinned. So why the fuck is the ref counting?
  11. At least they didn't give me false hope about the match being any good. In no time at all Shawn's ass is on display and they've completely killed the momentum with stupid outside stuff. I have carte blanche to do some clipping. It didn't matter a bit as long as they had the right finish. Austin becomes the company ace as the fans go home happy. However much they paid Mike Tyson for his services was well worth it. The amount of mainstream publicity it generated was unbelievable. Over here in the UK I think all the national newspapers sent a reporter over to cover it. That hasn't been the case for a single wrestling card since.
  12. The feud with Shawn Michaels is immediately consigned to the past as Mr. McMahon turns into the top heel in the company. Stone Cold is corporate enemy #1 and going to damn well do everything "the hard way".
  13. They'd been allies of DX for a while, so it was the logical next step for the Outlaws to join the stable. Rounded off an amazing edition of Raw with so many bombshells and so much going on.
  14. Really hot segment with Triple H becoming leader of DX and X-Pac returning to Raw. It was important having someone relevant move from WCW to the WWF to show it wasn't one way traffic. For the first time Triple H didn't look like a flunkie either. At the time I didn't know HBK wasn't coming back, so was wondering what he was going to make of this. I haven't watched this in 16 years but it feels like yesterday.
  15. If somebody bought me a gold Rolex watch I'd be loyal to him too. It wasn't just because the Rock is so much cooler.
  16. Getting to have your final wrestling match in front of 70,000 adoring fans is as good as it gets, and a worthy send off for such a legend. The match itself was too short, but I'm guessing Inoki didn't want to risk staying out there too long and looking bad.
  17. One of those moments which gets a great reaction on the night and then completely sucks for the next few months. It was pure nostalgia on this evening as the washed up veteran wins the IWGP title for a record 6th time. He still joint holds the record until Tanahashi's next title reign.
  18. His real name is Valerie Penis but he was forced to change it for the sake of decency.
  19. You had a strong heel vs face dynamic. The Gaea girls were smaller, less experienced, lower ranked and bleeding. The heels were hell raising outsiders who cheated a lot. That ticks plenty of boxes. Plenty of fun moments from my favourite tag team. They had the majority of the offence yet it wasn't too one sided. The youngsters showed strong spirit on their comebacks, and provided a sterner test than LCO were anticipating. The upset didn't feel inconceivable. Not at the level of the top Orientales matches from the era, but one of their highlights in GAEA.
  20. Given that this show was entitled Virgin: The Grand Opening, some fans might not have gotten what they were hoping for. It was an impressive start for Arsion however, and this was the opening contest. Ex-JWP wrestler Candy had retired the previous year, and completed that process by making her comeback. It was quite a coup to convince her to return with a new promotion. She looked sharp from the outset and hadn't missed a beat. Fukawa was a revelation with her mat skills. It was on a different level to her work in AJW. With the new style she had found her niche. Solid work during the build and got hot near the finish. Plus it was a total cutefest, which doesn't hurt! The draw was a logical outcome with Fukawa being lower ranked and Okutsu returning from a layoff.
  21. That was ridiculously awesome! I love the simplistic structuring, it's somehow appropriate. Great find Loss.
  22. Going in I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not. I have mixed feelings about the abilities of both wrestlers. The opening couple of minutes reminded me of those Marufuji-Kenta matches from the mid 00's. I can only describe it as 'every move has a counter you don't expect'. It's complete BS and they'd do endless sequences of this rubbish. Fortunately it didn't last long here as they settled into a period of body part work. Hayabusa on the arm, Tanaka the leg. It wasn't that it had to lead anywhere, that wasn't important. They just needed a fundamentally solid base to build off. The stretch was lengthy and wouldn't have looked at all out of place in 2008. Being ahead of your time isn't always a positive. Plenty of big movez and near falls. Outstayed its welcome a little, yet had some exciting moments and definitely wasn't lacking ambition. It was a good effort from both men.
  23. I enjoyed this one. A well planned and executed encounter, with sound structure and the right duration. The segments fitted nicely together with correctly timed switches in momentum. It wasn't just a gimmick how much DDP had improved, and he had a top notch opponent. A face vs face battle it may have been, but there was no lack of intensity or intent. Nice finish also. They achieved the level that they set out to produce. Any more ambitious and Page probably would've been found wanting.
  24. This certainly provided an effective push for Booker T, being able to win back to back at a significant disadvantage. Both bouts had reasonable duration as well. Allegedly it was supposed to be Martel who picked up the two wins, before he suffered a serious knee injury and they switched the finish. The veteran still looked pretty good during his cup of coffee final run. After the win Saturn jumped the victor and proceeded to work him over. T made regular aborted comebacks. It was quite reasonable fare although the structure wasn't ideal for match quality. Saturn was a solid worker, I'm fairly neutral on him. After a non-existent stretch Booker grabs the victory.
  25. Aaaagggghhhh!!! Curses to NJ for never showing the full version of this. JIP over 14m in, and I can't just guess what they did in that time. Maybe it was awesome? Maybe they did something retarded and the crowd were generous? I can't rate it. There was great excitement down the stretch and had the feel of a MOTYC. Ohtani was this time the defender rather than his challenger role from one year earlier. This may have been even better? Aaaagggghhhh!!!
