WCW production was generally useless. The PPV intro videos from this time looked like they'd been cobbled together in a couple of hours.

Bret is sat there like Hogan's lackey. He might as well have been Vincent or Beefcake. It was more than worth it at the end of each month I'm sure.

The entire Nitro appears to revolve around Nash and Hogan battling it out to see who can look cooler. Hollywood is so obviously jealous of the Wolfpac, it's pathetic to see how insecure he is.

Vader is physically struggling to bring himself to say the scripted lines afterwards. I'm sure there were many other things he wanted to say that wouldn't have paid the bills. The piece of shit was whoever decided to denigrate a great wrestler like this.

It's bad enough that Nash and Savage had just been feuding with Sting and everyone is meant to forget the last few months. Yet the worst part is how the announcers suddenly love the NWO Wolfpac after 2 years of hating the NWO on every show.

It was the 80's after all.
-
I can't remember much about the guy, but it's always sad when another wrestler doesn't make it to 50.

This has nothing to do with watching wrestling, unless you can't go onto the next chapter until you've typed something about it. You need to search deeper within your psyche. There is also a useful option where you can chronologically arrange the topics by clicking on Start Date. Or hope that Pete was the last one to watch that month. I'd love to think this is wonderfully multi-levelled wit, yet I have my doubts.

Group A: Rick Steiner - The Steiners were a great tag team, flaws and all. He was the lesser part of it but still comfortably top of group A. Demolition Smash - For about a month the Repo Man was my favourite wrestler so I have to give him some love. Road Warrior Animal - The Road Warriors were a pair of overated stiffs who only looked good in squashes. Group B: Terry Gordy - Easily better in the ring than the other two guys here. Not that he was ever close to top 5 in the world Mick. John Tenta - A good character wrestler who always tried his hardest to make something out of whatever crazy gimmick he got saddled with. Bam Bam Bigelow - His movement and bumping just look wrong and really bug me. Group C: 2 Cold Scorpio - A guy who could've had more success but never caught a lucky break. Inconsistent in the ring and dependent on good opposition. Yoshihiro Tajiri - He's okay in short TV bouts where he can cycle through his signature spots. Anything beyond that I've found him fundamentally lacking. Adding his own sounds effects for kicks is pretty annoying too. Sabu - Absolutely terrible. Has lots of matches on the Yearbooks and most people seem to hate on them. Group D: Chris Benoit - Used to be the greatest wrestler ever to me. Whilst I've greatly expanded my horizons since that time I'd still rate him very highly. Eddie Guerrero - I'm not as crazy about him as some people, but he was excellent both in the ring and on the mic. Shawn Michaels - I'd only have to think about him vs Gordy from the other 3 groups, but nowhere near the two guys listed above.

Clearly the pride of Bucksnort, Tennessee was an underated character worker of the mid 90's. IWC wisdom needs to be revised once more.

Did you know?... 1998 Disc 10 is the only one of the 300 Yearbook volumes to feature 100% US content. Before Vince came out and started dancing I didn't think anything was going to top Stone Cold's apology for his language. The match was a good one too. It was a luxury being given full length on 1998 Raw. Two old foes beat the hell out of each other all over the arena. Some seriously meaty chair shots were exchanged. They always kept things moving as well as being satisfyingly hardcore. There wasn't much drama near the finish as Foley went over convincingly. Then McMahon and the dudettes join the party.

You know I love you guys, but clipping this is so like not cool. Admittedly I have this in full on DVD (or Youtube) so I'm not really suffering here. It was awesome seeing Vader in Zen Nihon. The fans instantly loved him and the maskadon looked as sharp as he had done in ages. It was like a prisoner getting out on day release. Being able to wrestle a proper match on a huge stage against top quality opposition. It was electric whenever he faced off against Kobashi, instantly establishing a strong rivalry. Johnny Fucking Ace held his end up and made me mark out semi-ironically. Old man Hansen also managed to contribute positively. The gaijin combo was monsterous. His reduced mobility was well protected. There was one great moment when he slipped on the top rope yet ended up landing in the perfect place by accident! Having a flash pin was just the right way to end this refreshing and exciting contest. The most fun I've had watching AJ so far this year.

The first two caidas were strong technical Lucha. I'd be more than happy to have complete matches like this. Ironically it was Niebla and Warrior who had the best mat exchange. The hatred between Santo and Casas then boiled over and the tercera was more of a fight. That was fine in itself but it became a little unwieldy and ran too long. The mask ripping was an irritation to me but there was still enough decent wrestling going on to be in my good books. Then it ended with a mask removal DQ. You don't have the right to do that! They could have had 5 blown spots in succession, 3 run-ins and a reversed decision and I'd have preferred that as an ending. I don't ever want to see the wrestler unmasked unless he's lost a mask match. Ever. I can tolerate mild damage to the mask, though I don't like to see it. But seeing the face of a masked Luchador is an affront. If I ran a Lucha Fed (slightly unlikely I know) the mask would remain sacred at all times.

[1998-04-30-FMW-Fighting Creation] Hayabusa vs Mr Gannosuke
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Given that FMW used to be the 3rd biggest promotion in Japan it's surprising how indyish it often felt. I guess that it was a smaller concern once Onita, and to a lesser extent Kudo had hung up their boots. Plus it was so frequently imitated by smaller promotions trying to replicate its success. Hayabusa had such a great image. I've yet to see the evidence that he was better than good level as a worker. I'm not sold on Gannosuke yet. I would assume his knee was legit injured here. It would be bizarre to sell that small amount of legwork for such a long time otherwise. There was no shortage of ambition here, going full out for the epic title match. They produced some good moments but very sloppy in parts also. They'd have had a better quality match by reigning it in a bit. -
This followed one of the key rules of Russoism: 'It doesn't matter if it makes sense, you just have to surprise people'

After 8 years AJ returns to the Dome. How Kawada must have wished they'd done this sooner. Maybe the result here was enough? It certainly wasn't a memorable contest. For 25m it meandered along, never getting out of low gear. Then a few minutes of excitement to finish. It wasn't like Kawada had to do anything out of the ordinary to get the win. Nowhere near the level they were at a month earlier, so you'd have to put it down to injuries.

[1998-04-11-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Kenta Kobashi vs Jun Akiyama
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
30m of mainly good action, no real bad moments and a hot crowd. Another notch for All Japan in the top matches of 1998 long list. Whilst I can't deny the quality it did feel very formulaic. A little stale and a draw all the way. Compared to the Mis vs Kaw 3/29 match they had loads more big moves and near falls in this one. Both men unloaded the big guns and threatened at different points. The structure felt very mindful and deliberate. As I said in the aforementioned bout I prefer an organic structure for draws. Jun did some pointless work on the unbandaged knee. Previously he had been the rising young star. Now in 1998 he was feeling like part of the furniture. They really could have done with another rookie from the early 90's to come through. When the four corners rose to prominence it was a whole new generation. With Akiyama it was only one guy to add to the main event pool.- 9 replies

[1998-04-19-WCW-Spring Stampede] Goldberg vs Perry Saturn
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
This was a whole new level for Goldberg as he gets taken to 8m and faces a challenge. Good Lord he was insanely over, every move he did got a pop! His offense was so explosive and he had this irresistible forward driving momentum. The man could only be contained, not stopped. Perry put up some strong resistance and, one blown spot aside, brought his A game. There were some impressive moves here, yet nothing could match the finisher. The Rings of Saturn somehow reversed into the Jackhammer! Incredible. Really fresh and exciting, I dug this.- 9 replies

[1998-04-18-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Misawa wins the Carnival for the 2nd time following 1995. The only reasoning behind his victory I can think of was that other wrestlers had won it twice in the 90's so it Misawa needed to catch up. He certainly didn't need a push, and him winning the tournament doesn't accomplish anything. Uninspiring booking from what had become a stale promotion. Whilst they may have done things in a different order, this ended up feeling like a rehash of their January bout. Only a bit worse. There certainly wasn't any progression with Akiyama's status. Too much time outside the ring early doors. It acquired a foothold with some leg work, if that makes sense. Jun threatens the win, doesn't happen, meandering conclusion. Technically you could say it was a strong match, but it's been done a lot better on so many occasions by this point. As a sidenote Akiyama would eventually win the Champion Carnival. 15 years later! Even if Baba had stayed alive he wouldn't have made him wait that long.- 10 replies
