Not in itself a memorable bout, but looking back you can see the building blocks were there for their '99 Nitro classic. They had some nice exchanges and the chemistry between the two of them was evident. It was well worked within the face vs face format. For a non-PPV event it felt semi-important. On the downside it was too short, and having 3m of chinlocks in a 10m bout is plain lazy. Whatever happened to being worn out after a big match? It's not like I'm someone who is bothered by rest holds either when used in moderation.

[1993-11-09-LLPW] Shinobu Kandori & Utako Hozumi vs Bull Nakano & Takako Inoue
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
This was all about the Bull vs Kandori rivalry. Countless times I've seen this type of matchup with the two big stars on either side of a tag bout wanting to get at each other. They certainly did leave me wanting to see them face off in singles. The problem was that I wanted to be watching that instead of the tag, rather than in addition to. They didn't work in the Bull vs SK spots optimally to leave me satisfied with their interaction. Takako was above the role she had here. Hozumi was good in there against Takako but was a total jobber when facing off against Bull. Business picked up in the closing stages and it was a pretty good match overall. Just not quite what I was hoping for. The Hair vs Hair main event from this show with Akira Hokuto vs Rumi Kazama was excellent. The best singles bout of Kazama's career. Having a great opponent on the form of her life always helps.- 9 replies

[1998-03-29-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
When the 20m announcement feels like 15m it's never a bad thing. Another fine addition to the rivalry of the 90's. Whilst it may not have seemed likely it was going to a finish it never had the feeling of counting down the minutes. They worked it like they weren't bothered about the clock. It took however long it took to wear the other man down. In this instance 30m wasn't long enough for that to happen. I often find myself preferring organic time limit draws rather than having all the timings clearly planned out beforehand. Kawada certainly had the best of it, inflicting plenty of damage to the neck. Some wince-inducing blows and all the interaction was seamless. The crowd were into it as the rivalry brought importance. They achieved the level they set out for. There aren't many wrestlers who could have matches as good as this without going full out.- 7 replies

Everyone is so used to Foley changing personality that it doesn't seem a stretch at all for him to come out with an all new character. Forget about the suit, the hair and the beard. It's so damned weird seeing him with his teeth in. Then you have the deck being stacked against Austin in spectacular fashion. How could he possibly overcome this?

I really liked how they teased Lawler escaping the Tombstone because of the interruption, but he got his comeuppance after all.

I was hoping that Joe was going to surprise the fans by busting out a few moves. It was better for the angle to leave all the payback until the PPV however.

It's not long to wait until the birth of GTV. This was great stuff with Lawler and Bearer shooting the breeze. They actually managed to make the conversation feel like it wasn't staged. Not many guys could've pulled it off so well. It's time to update your log book Loss, we have more vital Undertaker & Kane backstory. The things that happened in that Funeral Home...

You get to see the evil mastermind at work here, manipulating others into doing his bidding.

El Dandy is the biggest one that springs to mind. From C show jobber with a terrible haircut to all time great with an awesome mullet. I used to really dislike Choshu as well before watching his 80's work transformed my opinion of him. My appreciation of RVD peaked after one match and has been on a downward spiral ever since. I used to like the Great Sasuke but he really tilts me these days.

I'm the exact opposite. If someone's shoulders are down and their opponent is touching them, that's a pin. Refs should be counting. If you're not being held down. prove it. Get the fuck up. We need an official rulebook to sort this out.

This was really fun. You can hardly imagine The Authority going to the TNA Impact taping now can you? It's starts off with Billy having a Bazooka between his legs. I think a gun would've been more appropriate. In a bit of one-upmanship Triple H straddles atop the tank's gun. This is all highbrow stuff but pretty funny. Did Chyna look good in combat gear or was I hallucinating? It was more like a rally than a war.

[1998-04-27-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Kevin Nash & Randy Savage
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
The only reason Konnan joined the Wolfpac is to make Nash and Savage look cool by hanging out with him. Watching WCW this year I'm left with the impression that most of the booking decisions were made on a Monday afternoon each week.- 6 replies

This was one of those hidden gems that show up from time to time. The best thing is that I have no idea how serious it was meant to be? It's usually so obvious if something is meant to be a joke, but I'm just not sure here. A former jobber announces that he has a new gimmick and is moving up in the world. Don't worry Kid. You're still a jobber, just a higher calibre of jabroni. Having the unmitigated gall to compare himself to Steve Austin and Goldberg was quite something. And mixing the straight shooting with the ridiculous gimmick was a bizarre combination. Just when you think the weirdness is going to end the camera keeps rolling and he smacks the DJ with a Daft Punk record. I'm just off to Youtube to watch the Da Funk video, regain some sense of normality.

Those two dudettes are smokin' daddy-o. The Dude Love character was suited to being mid-card comic relief rather than a main event heel.

I know that some people think the cardboard cutout was no less charismatic than the real thing. It cut a good promo here at any rate. This is building up really well to the payback.

[1998-04-26-WWF-Unforgiven] The Undertaker vs Kane (Inferno)
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
This was a great visual with the flames shooting up around the ring. They really shouldn't be having close up shots of the guy controlling the inferno. I don't know if they did this in FMW, it's a wacky idea for the WWF to come up with. Paul Bearer being stalked and then busted open was really good. It gave Kane a bit of time to adjust his attire IYKWIM. -
I'd be long since banned if I commented more on Memphis.

I know just what you mean. I really enjoy watching UWFI and Rings, but Battlarts is a big turnoff for me. I just can't bring myself to care about the matches or the wrestlers. There are other promotions that I have a total disconnect with, but they're easily explainable. It can't just be the audience size, as I watch other promotions with small crowds where things don't feel inconsequential. A couple of things strike me when watching Battlearts. Nearly everyone is small, and nearly everyone is angry all the time. It's like they're frustrated because of their stature when they're tough, macho wrestlers. Pissed off at being in crappy arenas with small crowds. And every time they look across the ring they see someone else just like them. It's like they're failures for being there. Maybe that's being unfair? Perhaps it's not quite being used to the style or not seeing the right matches yet that are holding back my enjoyment? It feels like more than that, but I haven't given up hope of my appreciation growing in future.
