[1992-05-02-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
The Bodies are in the finals of the tag team tourney at Volunteer Slam. Pritchard does a better job on the mic here than Lane. -
[1992-05-02-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs Tom Prichard
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
The title remains held up after Pritchard reveals the chain Christopher used in his tights. Good characters but nothing special here. -
Glad to see I'm not the only one who couldn't understand a word here. I like that the chyron identifies him as a a French luchador. Andre looks slimmer than usual, but not quite that slim.

[1992-05-01-UCW] Bill Wilcox vs Freight Train Fulton
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
This felt like a couple of wrestlers putting together a demo tape to show off what they could do, almost like an audition. While it was interesting for the time period its not something I'd want to watch again. **1/4- 12 replies

[1992-05-01-NJPW-Explosion Tour] Riki Choshu vs Scott Norton
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in May 1992
Norton gets to withstand some lariats better than most before eating the pin here. I know the Scott Norton of New Japan didn't bear much resemblance to the one in WCW, but he never did anything for me. -
Most of the NJ heavyweight stuff on the set thus far has been perfectly acceptable. Nothing remotely bad or offensive, but at the same time nothing that stood out as anything more than good or memorable. That's exactly how this match started out, with Vader selling well for Hase's strikes and a suplex and bumping for Muto. Fun stuff, but nothing special. Then Bigelow rips off Hase's bandage, the blood starts flowing and we get some kind of awesome. I may not be an authority on Hase's career but this is easily the best I've seen from him. He eats all sorts of power moves from Vader & Bigelow, who also go hard after his cut including Bigelow gnawing at it. His comeback gets the kind of sustained response from the crowd it deserves. Just a great match and fun to see how quickly it turned from run of the mill to something special. ****

I love Savage/Warrior, especially given how well it holds up to this day. I don't care very much for Savage/Steamboat -- its perfectly acceptable with nothing offensive and yet is in no way special or memorable at this point. I'm also not a big fan of Savage/Dibiase and may in fact regard the Hogan match at 5 as third in the pecking order behind the Warrior & Flair matches at this point.

I was a big fan of the show as well well with Rock's promo the only key segment that left me underwhelmed. Call me crazy but between Heyman's makeup, Punk's antics and UT taking a beating I was completely sold on the close and finally looking forward to that match. Thought HHH/Brock could've used a face to face or a more physical visual if not interaction but if I'm able to watch HBK skip to the ring with his air pistols and some pyro on Sunday I'll take this nonsense.

A little backstory here that no one probably cares about but is absolutely relevant to this match for me. I was 11 in '92 and recently subscribed to the Torch. The Torch had a monthly column about Japan and one month pimped the hell out of this match to the point that I absolutely had to get my hands on it. I sought it out in their classifieds and got a comp tape featuring it. It may have been the first Japanese match I ever saw, but it blew me away then and still blows me away today. This is two weeks after their first tourney match where Samurai started things by slapping Liger prematch and winning in typical heel fashion using a low blow. Liger offers a handshake to start. Samurai spits in his face and the war is ON. Sammy immediately rips at his mask, cracks a beer bottle over his skull, delivers a tombstone on the floor, another in the ring and further rips at his mask. I'm biased but you've got tombstones on concrete, beer bottles and mask shredding 3 minutes in which already makes this the best light heavyweight match you'll ever see. Liger's transition comes with a big fist and he doesn't just go on the attack, he brings his own version of hate to the dance. Sammy eats a power bomb on the floor and then Liger starts working on his mask which eventually is just about completely ripped off and hanging like dead skin from his neck. Samurai takes a sick bump on a dropkick. Liger brings a ringpost moonsault and Samurai is right back with a tope con hilo. The stretch run is sick -- Liger gets a near fall out of a power bomb to counter a Samurai rana. After a DDT and back suplex off the ropes Liger wins it with a top rope frankensteiner. This wasn't just Jushin Liger showing his versatility in the ring and having an opponent who was more than game to rise to the occasion with him, it brought the hatred and violence of Flair/Funk, Austin/Hart or any other classic and applied it in a junior HW setting. ****3/4 I began the yearbook expecting this to be my MOTY and it didn't disappoint. Its possible the AJ 6 man tag from May surpasses it if i I can be objective, but we'll see what happens come ranking time. What eventually prompted Samurai's face turn and team with Liger? I wasn't paying keeping current with the scene at that time and don't recall the specifics.

[1991-05-31-NJPW-Heavy Crush] Jushin Liger vs Norio Honaga

I wonder whether Liger or Lawler should be most honored by that sleight of mind.- 13 replies

[1992-04-14-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Terry Gordy
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
The crowd is amped for this before they even start. Misawa sold for the bulk of this, painting Gordy as a monster and doing a fantastic job of it. After trading strikes and eating a lot of Gordy's offense, which sets up some huge pops when Misawa reverses a suplex, power bomb and then kicks out of the 2nd power bomb. I liked the crucifix finish -- kind of a call back to 6/8/90 even if Misawa wasn't working as a LHW here. ***3/4- 12 replies

[1992-04-25-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Nikita Koloff

Lengthy interview with Nikita that I thought spent too much time on Luger. The clip of his babyface turn from years eaerlier was definitely the highlight.- 11 replies

[1992-04-25-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs Tom Prichard

Christopher decks Eddie Marlin with chain, then Marlin gets him back and Pritchard surprisingly wins the Southern title. Definitely not what you'd expect with the Bodies headlining in SMW. -

[1992-04-25-AJW-Wrestlemarinepiad] Aja Kong vs Bull Nakano
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
I've yet to try, but imagine if you put something like this in front of someone that's never seen women's wrestling and has the prejudices you'd expect come with such limited exposure that they'd rethink things pretty quickly. Headbutts and brawling to start with things moving outside quickly where Bull is busted open. Kong is soon juicing as well. Awesome near fall for Kong on a German suplex after Bull hit a top rope legdrop but missed the somersault version. The two trade awesome dives and Kong's uraken is only enough for a nearfall. After connecting on the somersault legdrop for only a near fall Bull gives us the facial that absolutely makes the match and finishes her defense with a moonsault. **** I really haven't watched a ton of joshi -- a couple comps here or there and some other matches sprinkled in, so its great to hear what others who are more well versed in it can add. My general understanding was that Kong was appreciated as an all time elite with only Hokuto considered her peer. Both here and in the other matches I've seen, Bull is not only better but clearly so. She's got thy physical presence to work as a monster against smaller foes, while faring no worse going toe to toe or working underneath against someone like Aja. More than anything else her style, facials and emoting are some of my favorite and never fail to draw me in. The other comments here similarly tout Bull as the man, so maybe I'm just imagining how they're viewed or its been that long since Bull was on top so maybe she was simply forgotten for a bit. Either way this holds up about as well as anything other than All Japan from the era.- 14 replies

[1992-04-25-AJW-Wrestlemarinepiad] Manami Toyota vs Kyoko Inoue
WingedEagle replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
Kyoko looks a lot slimmer here than I recalled. After an opening spring things slow down for a while as they kill some time without much structure or focus. The stretch run follows a series of Toyota dropkicks and big giant swing and is clearly why this got such acclaim at the time. Toyota pulls out 3 dives including a moonsault to the floor from the middle of top rope. Toyota wins the IWA Women's Title with the Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex. Seeing some of the earlier comments it makes sense that this was so highly touted based on a clipped version of the match, as the complete just isn't anything epic. Pretty funny in retrospect to see how highly it finished in the Observer's MOTY balloting based on the clips / word of mouth, as it wasn't even the best match on the show that night. ***3/4- 18 replies

HBK is pretty firmly #1 but Taker and Rock also have strong resumes.

I completely get that. My point is simply that a 25 year old kid is dead, and his parents' and family's world has been destroyed. Not much else is relevant at this point.
