Good God, is that match still going on? I thought that AA face in peril segment was never going to end. The opening was so good with Vader doing his chest bump onto the guardrail and Flair going after him with the chair. I was wicked amped for this match. Once everything settled down, it was still very good as Flair was supplying energy for four. Then they decided to do a 15 minute AA FIP segment. I marked for when Austin did the AA bump by taking AA's knees to gut during the knucklelock. Everything else was really good until the last 7 minutes or so when they ran out of things to do. Could have been a great one. Also, I will say Austin with that look, gimmick and mechanics just reeked midcarder to me. He is one of the few wrestlers whose match quality improved in the WWF. I actually don't blame WCW for not thinking he was not main event material.

[1993-11-10-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXV] Ric Flair vs Vader
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in November 1993
I have been digging babyface Ric Flair for a while now and this was a pretty good match. Vader worked on top really well and Flair's verbal selling was top notch. I liked the construct of all the openings Flair took advantage of. Every chance, he pounced on like the first time he got Vader on his back (Vader missed an elbow) he went right to the Figure-4. It showed he wasn't fucking around. I have always dug the superplex. Flair wins so we think off a missed Vadersault. This really put over Flair's underdog spirit and that the only way he could fell the monster is if the monster made a mistake, which is a great to put over guys. I think after you hear that crowd reaction, WCW was not too worried about putting the belt on Flair again. I know that Starrcade match has been polarizing. Historically, I have fallen on the positive side and a MOTYC for WCW. After the the Saturday Night tag match, I will get to it.- 11 replies

The look on Vader's face when he traps Tamura in the corner twice just says: DEAD MEAT. Each time Tamura comes out kicking and Vader is left screaming in agony. Eventually Vader gets a hold of Tamura and you know it is just a matter of time. Tamura shows a lot of moxie, but Vader is just too much man for Tamura too handle.

I agree that Vader brought the best out of Sting, but I think Vader had plenty of great matches in Japan and in WCW with a variety of opponents. Vader vs Sting - Vacant WCW World International Heavyweight Championship Slamboree 1994 I will give WCW credit at least they came up with a bogus committee to recognize this championship. Who recognizes the World Heavyweight Championship in WWE as the championship now that the brand split is dead? It is silly. This is the definitely the least of their PPV matches, but still really good and if lets say Bam Bam Bigelow had this match it would pointed to how good Bam Bam is. Vader & Sting had just raised the bar that high for themselves. They start off very cautious almost as if this is their first encounter. Now, maybe you could see this as Sting thinking he was going to fight Rude and Vader was a last minute substitute so both combatants are apprehensive because it is strange. It is very methodical for a Sting/Vader match, but at least it makes it different. "Sting Must Die" - the crowd lets us know we are in Philly. Vader's chest bump thing he does is just an awesome move and that the transition to the Vader Bomb and then some focused mat work on Sting's leg. They go into the usual Sting hope spots with Vader dominating most of the match before a ref bump. Vader delivers a nasty chokeslam, but eats a chair from Harley. Harley definitely had a hard time letting go just like Flair is now. Harley needs to mentor Flair on how to get old. Vader catches Sting on the Stinger Splash and throws him down. Spot of the match as it looked great. Vadersault misses, which is an awesome sight. Harley headbutts Vader and flying splash by Sting (always liked how out of control he looked on it.) At 14 minutes, I think this is the shortest Vader/Sting match. They did not wrestle a sprint, but it was still a good match, but below Zbyszko/Regal and the Cactus&Sullivan/Nasties brawl. I'd put it on par with the Dustin/Buck match from this card. Just a solid outing from two guys with ridiculous chemistry.

[1994-09-10-WCW-Worldwide] Vader vs Brad Armstrong
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in September 1994
Who's da man? You da man, Vader, you da man! -
Hall only mentioned Savage & Sting, who were the two main babyfaces on the show at this point. Luger was a tweener. Giant and Flair were the top heels. Hogan was on vacation. So it only made sense that Hall mentioned only Sting & Savage. This match didn't do much for me. It was just kinda there. Steiner threw out a bunch of cool shit, but he didnt string it together in an entertaining fashion. I hate when people just give up on submissions like Steiner did with the STF and Cross-Armbreaker. Sting was pretty decent. Solid match, but ultimately forgettable. What surprised me was how not bad Bischoff was on commentary. He was really putting over the current storyline between the two teams and getting over the athleticism and sporting contest of wrestling. He was easily way better than the horrid commentary provided on the current product.

[1996-05-20-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Meng & Barbarian
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in May 1996
Super. Overhead. Belly-To-Belly. There is a new convert to the Church of Barbarian and I am sorry to have ever doubted his awesomeness. This was a really good Nitro match that I have never seen. Good use of all those involved makes you wish they had a PPV match. I have always really dug the Sting-Luger angle from early 1996.- 7 replies

[1993-10-24-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Steven Regal vs Davey Boy Smith
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in October 1993
Good match that was a bit too one-sided for my liking. It felt like Regal was gobbling up Smith, who has some pretty cool offense in his own right that being said Bulldog was on his way out so maybe that is why. The beginning felt like an exhibition, but it was pretty funny and good bullshit. Regal's offense was good, but dragged a bit and the finish was short, but decent. I preferred the Fall Brawl match against Steamboat.- 12 replies

[1993-09-19-WCW-Fall Brawl] Ricky Steamboat vs Steven Regal
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Im leaning more towards El-P on this one. I thought this was pretty darn good and I think this would be a pretty safe lock for a Top 10 WCW match of 1993 for me. Steamboat's work at the beginning is flawless and is the perfect execution of selling an injury while still maintaining offense for a good 10 minutes, It was really good arm-oriented offense. Regal did blow off the arm work, but the rib work was pretty good. What hurt this match was the dead as a doornail crowd. I liked the Steamer's comeback a lot starting with the reversal of the tombstone and how he worked his injury into the cross-body not working. The finish was a perfectly way for a heel to lift the title off Steamboat. I would have liked a little bit more chaining in the beginning and nastiness down the stretch. Steamboat set the tone well that he was pissed off and he was going to beat the piss outta Regal, but it slowed a bit too far down before the finish.- 12 replies

[1993-08-08-WCW-Main Event] Ricky Steamboat vs Steven Regal (No DQ)
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
The chain wrestling was fantastic! So fluid and amazing to watch. Steamboat's amateur background sometimes get forgotten by me due to the karate stuff, but he can go on the mat was asked. Regal is so great at forcing people into interesting match dynamics. I think thats what I like the most about Regal. He makes people outside their comfort zone and more often than not they still look fantastic. The WWE needs more William Regals in that sense. The cheap finish at the 9 minute mark pisses me off because if this went 20 minutes, I think it was an instant classic. It leaves me all the more puzzled that their Fall Brawl and Starrcade matches arent well-received. I have never seen them, but based off this, I thought they be considered classics.- 9 replies

[1993-04-17-NWA-Grandslam I] Sabu vs Lightning Kid
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
This is a definitely transition match from the old 80s brawls to the 90s Indy spotfests. Sabu is someone who straddles the generations as he has a much better straight right than almost all the Indy workers of the 90s and did work to actually hurt his opponents, but he of course influenced so many to do the inane spots that became common. I thought this match picked up greatly after Kid got busted opened. It forced Kid to sell and added more drama to his comeback. Before that they were blowing off half-crabs and each other's moves to do their own moves. It was my turn-your turn at the beginning though Sabu's rights looked good and Kid's kicks were excellent. Once he got bladed, Kid really worked well from behind and Sabu really does look like a sadistic monster. Sabu's bump off the top rope frankensteiner was so nasty. Kid's comeback really showed why he was one of the best Indy workers of the early 90s as everything seemed so big. I have always loved Waltman's running short legdrops. It built well to the missed canonball splash as Kid needed a big bomb to take out the monster Sabu, who is a really excellent character. I think Sabu probably should have won after that to be honest if they were to do a non-bs finish. Instead we did get two really nice high spots from Kid in the form of the springboard plancha and that wicked spinwheel kick from the top onto the floor that just wiped out Sabu. Too bad they did a bullshit finish, but I guess they needed to protect the hometown boy and the new monster of the Indy scene.- 10 replies

[1994-05-22-WCW-Slamboree] Steven Regal vs Larry Zbyszko
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in May 1994
Lord Steven Regal vs Larry Zbyszko - WCW Slamboree 1994 Wrote this originally in 2013 just rewatched in 2016 had totally forgotten this match. Yes, Regal's mannerisms bothered me again. Consistency! Very good match and I thought Larry Legend out-performed Regal in this one. Regal took a page out of Zbyszko's playbook with some Stall-O-Rama. His mannerisms irked me. I liked this being in the vein of the Slamboree being a legend's event but with the old guard taking on the new guard here. Zbyszko is such a prick, but to his credit he actually wrestles as a babyface pretty well. I enjoyed Zbyszko cheating on the ab stretch. Zbyszko showing up Regal at his own game with slick chain wrestling and that roundhouse karate kick was great. Somebody needs to integrate a rolling double wristlock into a short arms scissors into their standard moveset because that is too slick of a move not to be done more frequently. Zybszko trash talks Regal. Regal gets pissed in the corner. Regal's forearms were sick. I wasn't feeling his matwork save for his bitchin' modified bow and arrow/chinlock thingy. The best part of this whole match may have been Bobby Heenan continuing to tout the Bockwinkel party line that Verne Gagne's sleeper was a choke. I marked out so hard for that. (I did again in 2016!) Great finish with Dundee cracking Larry Z in the head with umbrella only for Zbyszko to back drop Regal into a pinning predicament. This is an excellent first match in a series that really sets the table for future matches. I feel like matches likes these are a lost art. Cant wait for the Saturday Night match. ***1/2 -
[1996-11-18-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs Mankind
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
Foley was pushed pretty hard in '96 with the Taker feud and the Michaels main event. His '97 was pretty uneventful and mostly tied to HHH. He was not revitalized until he turned heel and sided with McMahon against Austin in my opinion. I loved the opening of this match until the first commercial break just a total out of control brawl with both guys constantly lunging at each other. After the commercial break I thought lost a lot of steam as they settled into a normal match with Mankind in control. I think Austin was the right guy to play the face in this match, I just thought the match became very normal. Austin's fiery comeback shows the fans were already ready to cheer him. Foley did seem a little quick to jump back on offense at times and didnt really sell well for any extended period of time. Not the greatest RAW match of all time, but a good WWF TV match. I very much prefer the Cactus/HHH street fight from the next year as a point of reference to this.- 18 replies

[1996-11-16-FMW-Scramble Survivor] Taka Michinoku vs Hayabusa
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in November 1996
This features the most egregious blowing off of psychology I think I have ever seen when Hayabusa decided to do a tombstone piledriver on the floor and work the rest of the match at full speed after Taka had put his knee into multiple leg laces, figure 4s, wicked springboard basement dropkick, and a chair shot to the knee. If they just did a straight spotfest, I would have said this was a pretty good match because both are pretty excellent at execution. However, if you decide to put in knee psychology dont act like the first 10 minutes didnt exist. The fact that Loss' complaint was about chairs makes me think I watched a different match as I only saw Taka use the chair once on the knee and Hayabusa pile up the chair. That was hardly overkill in my mind. The spotfest portion was well-done as Taka hit an absolutely ridiculous springboard corkscrew dive to the outside. I am a total mark for the 450 splash and Hayabusa's looked great. Each kicked out of the other's finisher a bunch before Hayabusa won with a very safely performed Steiner Screwdriver. I made my gripes clear, but I will praise them for their crisp execution during the spotfest portion.- 7 replies

El-P, I was just watching Flair vs Sting in 1993 and Sid was commentary. Even back in 1993, he was bitching and moaning about Flair's chops to the chest being the most painful thing EVAH~! You could tell from his tone how much disdain he had for taking those chops. Maybe Sid just has a sensitive pectoral region. Make of that what you will.

[1993-08-21-WCW-Saturday Night] Ric Flair vs Sting
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I was quite disappointed by this. I was expecting babyface Flair, who always goes to WAR~! Instead, I got subdued, Budokan Ric Flair vs subdued, on downers Sting. I will say the beginning back work by Sting was very refreshing, but it was clear throughout the match the gorilla press slam was their touchstone. If either one ever got lost, Flair would feed Sting that and they would reset. Flair was clearly in heel mode throughout telling the ref to "Shut up!" early and throwing up his hands. Compared to some 1980s matwork I had seen from Sting, this stuff made him look like El Friggin Dandy. Flair takes over on some Sting overzealouness. Those Sugar Smacks always do the Stinger in. Flair's offense is actually kinda pedestrian. He does do two nice delayed vertical suplexes, but he does that jockeyed for a pinfall, which he works in longer matches. I wanted him to throw some more stuff out. They trade figure-4s. Sid joins us and mentions that Flair's chops are the most painful thing EVAH~! Maybe Sid just had a sensitive pectoral region. Sting get his usual sugar rush and makes a pretty decent comeback. I liked the finish just fine with Sid stopping Sting from getting back in the ring as it furthers their 1993 Wargames program. It was a good TV match, but I was expecting more.- 12 replies

Is it just me or do Dolph and Kofi have some freaky chemistry where they can have great matches with each other and no one else? Personally, Jericho and Cesaro are two of my top three and last week they couldnt get much out of either. Jericho/Ziggler actually had a really disappointing affair last week. This week Ziggler/Kofi were on fire. Ziggler's offense, which is the most suspect part of his game, looked great. I think Ziggler's bumping helps Kofi a lot. I have only watched the first half of the show. There is no way my brother and I can sit through 3 hours of that even on DVR. I will say that Columbus crowd was crazy hot for a RAW. Usually, it looks like a WWE crowd would rather be anywhere else. My favorite fan of the year was the middle-aged woman with her hair done and nice big earrings looking like she was about to take in the opera, Carmen, only to pop fucking huge during the Orton/Rhodes match. The Orton/Rhodes match was so strange. It was a decent match. There were some rough patches, yet the crowd was acting like it was the best match they had ever seen. My brother and I were totally dumbfounded. Orton can be a total bore in and out of the ring, but I feel recently he has at least tried to interact with the crowd, added some suplexes and cut down on the chinlockery. Seriously, the crowd sounded like it was reacting to Savage/Steamboat, but it was just a mediocre Raw match. Finally, ZUBAZ~! Ricardo Rodriguez is my hero and heroes are forever.

[1992-06-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Barry Windham vs Arn Anderson
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in June 1992
Great, great TV match that focused on my favorite thing in wrestling body-part work. Things like Windham beating on AA's left arm while he was in the leg lace was really good. Actually thought, Anderson's leg work in the first fall was really good and felt like he was really trying to twist Barry's leg off. Barry for his part was trying to take Arn's arm home with him. Barry has some swete punches. My favorite thing about classic wrestling is how much a closed fist means. Whether it is a heel short cut or a fired-up babyface dishing out some punishment. Flying clothesline is a good finish. Barry came right out back on the arm in the second fall, but tumbles over the top and injures his back. So that makes sense why Anderson shifts his attention to the back. Two things I really like about 2 Out Of 3 Falls: 1. Secondary Finishers can win falls 2. You can add wrinkles like no babyface comebacks. If a babyface comback doesn't happen in a match, then in my book that is definition of a squash. The way this was structured, Arn could take his back work to the logical conclusion of a spinbuster and picking up a fall. If that was justa one fall match, I would be scratching my head and saying why did Barry get squashed. I wouldn't have liked the match all that much, but by doing it in the context of 2 out of three falls, it doesn't necessiate a babyface comback in each fall. The first two falls were tremendous. The 3rd fall was good and was building to a hot Barry comeback, but it hard to separate that work from the shitty finish. I didnt really get the booking of this as I don't understand why you needed to protect Arn plus JR just spent a minute or so saying Dangerously does NOT want a DQ b/c the title cant change hands via DQ. I get they wanted to setup Windham/Austin for the following week, but just do a post-match brawl rather than that.- 19 replies

[1992-09-26-WCW-Saturday Night] Dustin Rhodes vs Jake Roberts
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in September 1992
1992 WCW sure liked your standard mechanical, meat & potatoes matches (thinking of AA vs Windham and most MVC stuff), which is the type of stuff I feel should be a part of every card. I didn't think that is particular match was as good as the AA/Windham match from June. I thought Duston was loads better in this match than Jake. Jake probbaly came up with the layout, but Dustin was better at execution. You could make the case that Jake fed him better as Jake forced him to peper in rights during his armbar stretch, but it is credit to both of them that beginning shine portion was well-done. I thought after the trick knee, which I like, that it kinda dropped off a cliff. Jake stopped selling the arm. His offense was pretty boring as he went between the throat and the leg. Dustin's comeback was pretty sweet and the type of fiery comback you like to see. The crowd really seemed to be behind Dustin even though there was some Jake towel-wavers. Jake going over clean was great. I think it shows the value of a upcoming white meat babyface to a roster as they can absorb losses from heels above them and still look good from just hanging with them. Great booking and a good match is a rare treat from WCW.- 14 replies

[1992-01-25-USWA-TV] Jeff Jarrett & Jerry Lawler vs The Moondogs
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
Just watched this angle (concession stand brawl, Moondogs squash, the Fuller/Jarrett MSC match, and this one), totally blown away by how fantastic it all was. I really dont have much to add, but I will stand this match was my favorite standalone segment of the whole angle. This may be my favorite brawl of all-time as it is really just incredible stuff. This is by far the best stuff I have seen out of my limited USWA watching.- 13 replies

[1991-04-13-WCW-Saturday Night] Ric Flair vs Brian Pillman
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
It is a pick 'em when deciding between this and ''90 match. I am going to make the case for the '90 case, which may make it seem like I am slighting this match, but that is not my intention. I actually think '90 match felt more like a war with Pillman going to bat for his friend, Sting and being generally disgusted by his idol Ric Flair's actions. He comes out hot out of the gate and overwhelms Flair early. Eventually Flair is giving as good as he is getting, but that match is classic Flair with Flair making Pillman's offense look amazing and eventually they do some bs finish. This match made Pillman's heart look bigger than El Gigante. Now GAB '90 until his WWF run is my big Flair blackhole. Having watched his match with Steiner from Fall of '90, I saw a different Flair who was more concerned with getting his offense in rather than his opponents. This strikes me as someone who maybe feeling insecure about his position in the company and having an identity crisis. Maybe Flair reacted to this by taking control of larger chunks of matches to portray himself in a more positive light. That is not a bad thing, he cheats like a mutahfucka throughout but he clearly is on offense way more than expected as he is constantly cutting off Pillman. So it is not Pillman's offense that is being showcased but rather his ability to withstand Flair's dirty tactics. He does eventually get the visual pin to put over Air Pillman. Flair looked great on offense with a couple suplexes, chops and a low blow. I would hazard to say this is the best Flair looked in 1991. I prefer the 90 match because I thought Flair kind of went overboard with the jawing with the fans. I love a good jaw session especially when Flair is gesturing that he is going to take someone's lady friend on a Ride On Space Mountain, but I liked the general nonstop war between the two in 1990. We can all agree that is a shame these two never had a higher profile match. Finally, if I were so inclined to join the Flair debate (for the record Flair is the greatest wrestler ever in my mind), I would screaming from the mountaintops how different the '90 Pillman and '91 Pillman matches are and it is NOT just the haircut.- 14 replies

[1991-06-03-WWF-MSG, NY] Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter (Desert Storm)
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in June 1991
I love this match and Id go so far to say it is Hogan's best match Stateside (the Backlund '80, Vader '95 are close). It is much more violent, visceral and Southern than just about any Hogan match. Yet at the same time, it is distinctly WWF with the Patriotism and the focus on vicious spots rather than continuous viciousness. The entire story of the match is Hogan throwing all of Slaughter's dirty tactics back in his face: powder, fireballs, the boot and coup d'grace: the Camel Clutch. Slaughter was a bumping machine and sold like a million bucks. When it came time for him to take control, he was still convincing in beating Hogan down. I like this finish better than just about any Hogan match ever. Tremendous match with a style that you wish the WWF would bust put from a time to time back in their heyday.- 19 replies

[1990-01-15-WWF-MSG, NY] The Rockers vs Powers of Pain
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I just want to echo most of the comments about how killer this match is and I think this match fleshes out what was missing from the RnR Express vs Doom match as the Powers of Pain were really delivering some badass offense on Marty's back. The babyface shines in those two matches are about equal; it is the heat segment where this match exceeds the RnR/Doom match so well. Marty got some serious air on some of those throws. Jannetty's selling is actually better than in the RnR's match, but he a little bit more chance to demonstrate it since he wasn't in a chinlock. Interesting they went with Marty as Ricky Morton and Shawn as the hot tag as Rockers' matches are usually better when the roles are reversed. I liked the finish as it was a good way to protect the Rockers and have PoP go over.- 38 replies

[1991-07-01-WWF-MSG, NY] Ultimate Warrior vs The Undertaker
Superstar Sleeze replied to Loss's topic in July 1991
When I read these reviews, I said to myself "You must be shitting me." I think this is best Warrior performance where he is not being carried by the likes of Rude or Savage. There is something about Warrior fighting an evil Zombie that just seems so right. I think if there was a Sci-Fi/Comic Book wrestling fed where Warrior was the Ace Babyface and fought heel Robots, Zombies and Aliens that it would be pretty awesome. When Taker just keeps coming at Warrior at the beginning even as Warrior is clubbering was a cool visual. Taker gets in his one highspot at the time: the flying clothesline. Choking is boring and not well-done. What is well-done are Warrior's piledrivers. He should have added that to his arsenal. The Zombie Sit-ups and the counter to the Warrior Splash were very 80s horror movie campy cool. The finish was perfectly adequate and solidly booked with the Tombstone -> Comeback-> Urn Shot. This was totally preposterous and absurd, but I loved it. This is just one of those matches that the WWF produces better than anyone else. Not only that Warrior got a way better match out of the Undertaker at this point than Hogan did. Warrior looked really strong in this match to me. I have been racking my brain, but is this the best pre-1996 Undertaker match? I cant think of one. -
Fantastic match! This was fabulous hold/counter-hold wrestling that progressed so well throughout the match. I will admit after two viewings (first in January) I still think the first fall is a little dry. I was not feeling the same urgency and I commend their selling while in the holds, but out of the holds I felt there was little drama in the first fall. Things picked up big time for me in the second fall. I loved Angel wrenching Dandy's leg after countering the sharpshooter and Dandy countering with an Indian Deatlock. There was more of a struggle and urgency in the second fall. My one complaint seems to be Angel Azteca is not very good at selling. In fact, while Dandy is selling both fatigue and injuries, I feel Angel is kind of blowing the whole thing off. I have never heard of Angel Azteca before this thread was created. I have to say El Dandy is 20x better than Angel. The third fall is stupendous wrestling. Angel's Russian Legsweeps are my favorite thing about him. El Dandy selling his knee so he cant execute a Mexican Surfboard is sweet. Dandy is wrestling the match of his life it feels. Dandy busts out a bunch of big bumps to spice up things: suplex to outside, takes the big dive, huge hotshot into top turnbuckle. The drop toehold into La Magistral is a beautiful finish. I think any match that is the greatest in its genre deserves to be GOAT Candidate. I just happen to love big bumps, face/heel dynamics, and vicious strikes enough that this is not my choice for GOAT. But if this is your preferred style, then I definitely think this is a worthy candidate and a match will enjoy to watch for years to come.
