[1991-04-19-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Tom Prichard (Chain)
ajtroma replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
I was the biggest USWA fan around here at the time and even I hated (and still do) these ESPN tapings. The guys were clearly in the "let's get this over with"/spot show/just another night mode. Also, the biggest problem really is that Eric Embry was the booker. I know he's kind of a cult favorite these days, but, I always thought he was nothing but a pig and terrible at everything he ever did. You ask any of the babyfaces around there at the time and see if they have a good word about Embry. I know a couple want to still cut his throat.- 11 replies

[1991-02-23-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett and J.C. Ice
ajtroma replied to Loss's topic in February 1991
Of course, the whole story Jeff tells isnt quite true but he gives it the old college try. -
There is a part of me that wonders what Zeus in Memphis against Lawler would have been like. Lawler has performed miracles in his day. I just wonder.

Let me defend Craig here. He was a legit sportscaster and, as such, wanted to call the matches legit. So, he asked Jerry Jarrett not to clue him in on the finishes. Whatever he did was true to the moment. I liked Craig because he really was one of the first to know both wrestling history and have a good command of current pop culture. But, those glasses...

Terrific match. The announcing, however, was absolute dogshit awful. Lawler was at his very hack worst here and Vince's blowjob commentary was obnoxious as well. Roadie, arguably minutes away from the biggest mistake of his career, did his part well. His dreadlock/extensions were just ugly.

There was a Bret Hart-Hakushi Cage match that I saw at a taping live that I'm hoping makes the cut.

There's a rumor that they were going to possibly going to go with Shawn-Lawler at SummerSlam. I was there the next night at the Superstars taping. The Ted Dibiase/Sid interview about the original Shawn-Sid match at SummerSlam never saw the light of day. Sid was just a flop and they knew it. They didnt want to cool Shawn off (and piss him off) with a lousy match on the ppv. So, Shawn needed a hot match and hey, Razor isn't doing anything so....

One thing I loved about this particular segment was how Lance shifts the tone of the whole feud. It was first a rivalry between two top teams. It suddenly became very personal. Also, not overtly called upon was that now PG-13 would have to finally grow up. They're not the skinny little weasels from 1993 or the gutsy, white-meat babyfaces barely scraping by. They would have to become men or else they (and the whole USWA) were going to get eaten alive.

A little later on WCW, we'll have a visit to the Dungeon of Doom. Dont like that? Well, over on the other national promotion, Jerry Lawler is in the dentist's office, using every infuriating dentistry pun known to man, to hype a psycho orthodontist that seems to like to torture children. 1995 was one bizarre, often idiotic, year.

The evil dentist and his crown-wearing hype man basically torture a child.

Then the RSPW can go fuck themselves. I thought this was a very good gimmick. At the time, if you recall, was the second wave of Blaxploitation films, The Gangstaploitation movies. All those "Menace 2 Society" knock-offs. Gangsta rap was big and controversial. So what was wrong with a guy telling the kids and early teens that gangs are stupid and not to go down that path? I don't give a shit if I am the only one who liked this one.

A quick shot of Lance Wright to the King's right for no real reason. We see the good doctor for the first time here. Golly, this didnt work???

Was this red-headed kid the guy who played "Zoomer" in Richard Gabai's (my facebook friend. Yeah!) films "Virgin High" & "Hot Under the Collar"? If anyone actually answers this one, I'll be pleased.

Unbearably catchy. I can still do this song, word for word, 22 years later. It seemed like this song, the theme from "Friends" and Hootie & the Blowfish sum up a whole summer for me, musically. I couldnt escape them. That's before I went all retro. Anyway, there are quick little things here that if you look closely, it reveals Jeff is lip-synching here. I know they were trying to sell the cassette single after Jeff & Roadie split suddenly. I don't know how much they got back in this investment. This looks like a standard $100,000 music video.

Other than Vince Russo & Matty In the House, I still have a burning, venomous hatred for Todd Pettingill more than anyone in wrestling history. Losing here actually broke the Body Donnas out of the pack. Instead of being lumped in with all the other new characters getting meaningless TV win after meaningless TV win, we see them now as something different. Sunny is now the bossy, spoiled little brat while Skip is a pussy-whipped little crybaby doofus. Plus, Horowitz deserved some love. Good stuff all around. Except for fucking Pettingill.

[1994-03-12-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Ricky Steamboat
ajtroma replied to Loss's topic in March 1994
I remember thinking back then that Steve Austin was going to be the next Ric Flair. Of course, he became the biggest thing in the business but it was like two different people. Terrific TV match but wouldnt Austin fire Col. Parker on the spot for such blantant stupidity?- 16 replies

[1995-01-21-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13 / Interview: PG-13

Get used to them. Randy Hales clearly let his fetish show. -
[1994-09-03-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich, Buddy Landell and the Moondogs

Dave immediately calling them on their obvious bullshit was a laugh out loud moment for me watching back then. -
Well, yeah. Those darned IWA tours kept getting Doug suspended.

[1994-08-13-USWA-TV] Interview: Brian Christopher & Buddy Landell
ajtroma replied to Loss's topic in August 1994
The stipulations stated that Brian couldnt team up with anyone he'd ever teamed up with before for the big revenge match. He chooses Landell. They immediately have a tag match on TV. I always thought this era of USWA was better than it should have been due to the talent. Randy Hales is such a fucking moron.
