The reporting has been all over the place here, with Meltz now saying Marty is just on the booking committee, with Delirious still head booker. Maybe that's just in name, I dunno. Also, I think building a relationship with AEW would be an incredible long shot - as Dave pointed out, it's hard to tell what on earth ROH would offer in that relationship, other than Marty.

It doesn't sound like anything's been signed yet. But I'd assume he'd still be free to work in other countries, too.

I will say - I was thinking about buying the show tonight, and this has soured me enough to be sure I'm not going to. Now, to be fair, I was on the fence to begin with (Impact's shows I think are a bit expensive relative to the value). And it's not like I'm saying I'm never going to watch Impact again. But sometimes people do decide to vote with their dollars.

Dave said Marty was offered WWE main roster money. Considering the number of ROH dates, those are some fat stacks.

Yeah, just noting that it seems like usually they have a few tickets left until close to the end, whereas this basically sold out when they announced the card. And yeah, it's an awesome looking show, particularly Mox-Suzuki.

Isn't that a really fast sell out for them?

I think the ultimate problem is that he doesn't get into enough depth. So once he's covered a couple of shows from an era, he's basically mined his subject for all their thoughts on the matter. From an artistic perspective, he should probably do six months worth of shows with a guest and move on.

I find this style less problematic when there's not aggressive limb work in that opening section (like a lot of the Okada-Tanahashi matches). It's not like they had to no sell ten minutes of leg work to do the finishing stretch. Agreed that the last third was incredible. I think a lot of the no selling worked here because it came after Ibushi "snapped" (which is established in his character) and can be read as these guys pushing themselves past their limits. Okada needed to find another gear or this madman was going to destroy him (and worse, take his title).

It's a little odd of a vibe for the follow up to something with the scope of Wrestle Kingdom to basically be "let's do it again tomorrow." Curious how the crowd's energy will be tomorrow. Hiromu kicking out after Hidden Blade got such a wild reaction. Great moment.

I would argue the assumption when they sold the tickets in August of the year before was that the Elite would be there. I'd give Okada some credit for the sellout - he was the lead guy on the advertising with Marty, and I'd wager the possibility of seeing him win the title kept the bottom from totally dropping out of the ticket market - but it's probably a stretch to say he sold out the Garden on his own.

They definitely brought the creativity and intensity tonight.
-
Not sure if the amount of time they keep leaving for main events is intentional or not, but 11 minutes of air time at the start of this match is not great.

Sammy doing a promo via signs in the PIP break was tremendous.

Dug Cody-Darby, and the way Arn played into the finish.
-
That pop for Cody - WOW. He's still their most over guy.

I watched this one while I was cooking, hoping for some more Marty. No luck. Really liked the Cabana-Drake face off, the way it went in a couple directions and felt like a real conversation. I think the show is suffering a bit with Aldis playing full fledged heel - I think he was stronger in the tweener role.

The date for the recap show is 12/28 I believe (last Saturday). The other thing about Impact is that the roster has had so much turnover that there's not a lot of value in going too far back to be up to date on the current stories - there's a lot to enjoy, especially in the PPVs starting with Slammiversary from 2018, but it's not essential to keeping up with the current stories.

If New Japan won't be on TV in the US (and maybe isn't pursuing a new deal), does that make it more palatable for AEW to work with them? At that point it doesn't become promoting a competing TV show, it becomes working with a foreign company that's not a U.S. competitor. New Japan doing house shows in the U.S. isn't a big deal in competing with AEW since, well, AEW doesn't do house shows. Might be that everything is lining up for the two companies to be complements to each other in the U.S.

The headscratching part here isn't ending the AXS relationship, but saying there are no plans for future broadcast in the U.S. "We're working on a new partnership that we'll announce soon!" would sound much better.

Would any NWA Power viewer complain if the show rolled straight into an hour of classic Houston matches from the library they own?

The Marty stuff very much seemed to me like a build to a PPV match with Aldis that could be a one-off. I'd pay for that rematch, though. The thing I don't get on Marty to NJPW would be that he hasn't worked there since the BOSJ. Maybe ROH blocked it because of the relationship going to shit? (There were ROH shows during the fall NJ tours, including Super Jr tag league, where you'd think Marty and Flip would have been obvious candidates.) Anyway, I'm fascinated to see how this all plays out, as Marty is in a very 2019 situation, not just with all these options but also his own merch sales that make him less beholden to a promotion than most.
-
Yeah, I'd assume the logic is that they're better off having multi-man matches so that they can build to those guys headlining the New Beginning or US shows. They are running two tours simultaneously, which means two sets of main events. And while I'd love to see those guys get bigger matches, they hadn't built anything that was going to sell any more tickets with them in a better match.
