[2009-01-11-TNA-Genesis] Alex Shelley vs Chris Sabin
Migs replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in January 2009
Agreed, thought this was really good. Like the way it built to the near falls and didn't overuse them. They basically established that these two guys were equals, and then Shelley used the deceit to get the win. I feel like 80s Dave Meltzer saying this, but this felt very Japanese style in the way things were structured and worked. Probably the best match I've seen from these two outside of a couple of spectacular spotfests with the Young Bucks. -
It feels like they are hitting the dregs of the taping already, and there's still two episodes to go (although I'm pretty intrigued by Callihan-Park). I didn't think Rush-Strickland was particularly great. I don't feel like I totally "get" Rush yet, although I'm sure there's a lot lost in seeing him wrestle US indy guys he's not familiar with.

[2011-03-13-TNA-Victory Road] A.J. Styles vs Matt Hardy
Migs replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in March 2011
Matt's look here, with the braids and bedazzled pants, is terrible and very good heel business. I was actually disappointed with this on the whole. Very tentative beginning. The spots are good - AJ sliding under the guard rail is wild - but it never really builds momentum. Flair still throws a great chop, and definitely adds to this from the outside. The finishing stretch is good, but what came before it was merely so-so. Not recommended. -
The TV shows are really bad. Just the overall energy of them is so stale, to the point that even the best workers can't change it. ROH has been and likely always will be a live show product.

[2005-10-23-TNA-Bound For Glory] Jeff Hardy vs Sabu vs Abyss vs Rhino
Migs replied to GOTNW's topic in October 2005
Definite step up over the first Monster's Ball. Great pacing, really made use of the fact that there were four guys in there, both to keep things moving and to sell the damage. You can really feel the difference in how Hardy looks in this type of match as opposed to a singles match. The escalation in the spots was pretty good, and the second rope piledriver felt like a believable way to finally end it (and the dive from Sabu being just a split second late was a nice detail). Very fun and worth seeing.- 3 replies

[2004-11-07-TNA-Victory Road] Raven vs Abyss vs Monty Brown
Migs replied to El-P's topic in November 2004
TNA video packages are always very bad at getting across the story of the match. It's always just PEOPLE. ARE. FIGHTING. Very fun hardcore match, reasonably well paced, not too many long pauses except for Abyss getting the tacks. Hate ref bumps in this stuff, but at least the bang-bang table spots at the finish were a good climax. -
A spotfest, but a really good one, with minimal climbing or spot set up downtime. Leave it to AJ Styles to help make the best of a dumb gimmick match that usually produces big messes (to be fair, the others are pretty good in this, too). The Styles Clash through the table looked awesome (and major props to Homicide for taking that). The spot from Daniels for the finish was also really spectacular. Not a must see classic or anything, but really enjoyable compared to the other few Ultimate X matches I've seen.

I actually really liked the finishing stretch. The first part was engaging and well worked but felt a little lacking in heat, but the blood really kicked things up a notch, and Styles bleeding in the Koki Clutch was a terrific visual (it made for an awesome video package for sure). Felt like they should have just gone with the draw, though, as AJ coming back to win felt like it undercut the moment. But that's a somewhat minor quibble on a really good match, maybe the best match I've seen on my recent dive into aughts era Impact (right there with the threeway involving these two and Samoa Joe from later in 2005).

The place to pick it up if you prefer the story aspects is the one called "The Bullet Club Gets a Villain."

They are great together, and wildly over. I'm not sure why it works on the level it does, but there it is. Has there been any reporting on the "third party" that pulled Rush from the April 4 show? ROH?

This promotion apparently doubles as a Rorschach Test for every wrestling fan's feelings about everything wrestling related.
-
I liked this better than the Full Metal Mayhem match - the bumps were cooler and at least it felt like it had some semblance of a structure in the way it built and moved. Wouldn't say it was good, or even an impressive spectacle, but I was at least engaged a bit.

[2005-02-13-TNA-Against All Odds] Jeff Hardy vs Abyss
Migs replied to GOTNW's topic in February 2005
This felt like it was built around a dumb bump that wasn't even all that dumb? Don West screams about Hardy jumping from the top of a building, but we've all seen him leap from way higher ladders than that set (credit to them doing a good job of shooting it to emphasize the height as well as possible). The two envelope gimmick is pretty dumb, too, although I guess it's an easy way to do a false finish. Oh, I wrote the first bit before I saw the final table bump, which Hardy doesn't even sell? Just so weird.- 2 replies

Even just scanning some GIFs... this feels like a brilliant, low key move by AEW. The athleticism level and creativity is mind blowing.
-
There is literally no way he's in charge, but I'd assume he'd be part of the team.
-
He had a legit elbow injury, is my understanding, and pulled out of a bunch of dates as a result. I wouldn't put it past him to have worked that once he knew the contract was coming, but those were the reports.
-
Not a shock, but here's Jericho.
-
They've announced a relationship with CIMA's promotion. Also, MJF!

One thing that hasn't been discussed in terms of the TV deal is how they intend to tape the shows. Are they going to go the now standard indy route of taping 3-4 episodes in a night? Or do they try and go live every week? Meltzer keeps talking about how every two bit MMA organization can get a strong TV deal and wrestling (outside WWE) can't, but WWE is also the only promotion right now that can claim to be "live sports" in the American market. That might be where the Khan money becomes very important - funding start up production costs in the hopes of netting a large enough TV deal to create sustainable revenue going forward.
-
The episode above (SPOILER, I guess) does point to Omega going to AEW (the ticking clock on the phone at the end; Kenny saying he'd "lost his phone" earlier in the ep). The alternative would be his friends setting him up to make a big deal of a WWE announcement, which is possible but seems less likely.

[2008-06-08-TNA-Slammiversary] A.J. Styles vs Kurt Angle
Migs replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in June 2008
Angle looks so small here relative to other points in his career, its legitimately disorienting. Also, Styles' stubble and chest hair (I guess to up the manliness level?) is super noticeable when you flip from Styles a couple of years before this. It felt like they wanted this to be a big deal, but it ends up being a slightly better paced version of an old X division match. The moves have a little space to breathe, but it's all still very move heavy and lacking in heat. Surprised to find myself kinda bored at points. The annoying ref bump/ turn finish at least doesn't go too over the top and the Styles Clash gets the pin clean. Kinda meh on the whole. Not recommended. -
Yeah, this was a pretty solid southern tag. AMW strike a nice balance here - they show ass but also maintain enough credibility that you buy it when they go on offense and it feels like Styles and Daniels have a real mountain to climb. Not sure why whoever the neutralizer lady was had to be nameless - wonder if that led anywhere. Liked the finishing stretch the beer bottle and then the tandem flying finishers from Styles and Daniels. Well worth seeing.

[2005-09-11-TNA-Unbreakable] Samoa Joe vs Christopher Daniels vs A.J. Styles
Migs replied to Loss's topic in September 2005
I thought this was a pretty excellent spot fest, really well paced as mentioned above. I also liked that there was a bit of restraint in hitting the kickoff spots until close to the end, so when they got there the pins seemed plausible. This felt like the absolute best version of a kind of match that really defined the early part of the aughts, and while I'm sort of glad that style is less prominent than it used to be, you have to respect that these guys really crushed at it, in a way that many others didn't.- 9 replies
