  3. Juvy looks real strong here, punishing Rey with power moves and dominating most of the match. Is it wrong to like Lee Marshall on commentary? He has a similar cadence to Bob Caudle - the old time football announcer vibe. I really liked the finish as Rey moves out of the way, but Juvy has the presence of mind to land on his feet rather then splat on the mat. Rey rips off the rana for the title change. ***1/2
  4. Not much to add on top of Chad. Watching older Tenryu in this vein reminded me of Flair in ECW in '06. Pretty stiff stuff to wrap things up after they cycle through the basic hardcore match tenants of 1998. **
  5. I liked this a good bit. Both guys broke out solid counters and early high spots were thwarted as things built to the second half of the match. Solid matwork to start as well. the nearly botched moonsault gets things in gear While I was rooting for Dragon to finally get him with one of his roll-ups, it made sense that Ohtani finally escaped and we get a good finish. The dome seemed to really get behind this one by the end. ***3/4
  6. Enjoyed the highlight package and the big send-off here. I need to break out the 80s NJP and AJP sets and find some select stuff.
  7. Without context, I was guessing this was a worked shoot / faux MMA style match. The suplexes looked like semi legit takedowns. Helluva ballshot by Frye - you gotta give him that.
  8. 16 years later and Matt Hardy is still going strong. I managed to guess Moore correctly, as noted, he's really small here. Cham Pain seems pretty decent and that twisting corkscrew dive late in the match was crazy. Lot of big bumps for a small indy crowd in 1998. I'm around **1/2.
  9. On every fucking podcast. Booked solid. Contemplated changing the PTBN slogan to "Your home for Dylan Hales' audio archive"
  10. I liked Jericho berating the crowd until he's told they're "live" and he switches his tune to talking about how he won't let this happen again. If I'm Rey, I'm pretty pissed at Charles Robinson, who just lets Jericho wrench on the Lion Tamer - even after Mysterio taps.
  11. What a way to neuter Sting's big Starrcade moment. I'm glad we get the post-Nitro finish as I remember at the time being pissed that the show just cut-off. Good hook for the first Thunder (as KR notes above).
  12. Flynn gets a couple sequences in where his kicks thwart Goldberg for a couple seconds before Goldberg brings the big power moves. Pretty enjoyable squash with the different holds being worked.
  13. You can't say Hall wouldn't do business or hold up his end in this feud. A distraction gives Traylor the clean win and furthers things for Hall in the Larry Z feud.
  14. Pretty cool that they interspersed clips of Funk and Foley killing each other in Japan. I can always get behind a good empty stadium promo.
  15. Austin delivers stunners all around to negate any kind of match. He puts on Ross' headset and cuts a promo and mimicks throwing back a beer. I feel like either he did that a lot or this was a pretty famous segment for him.
  16. Agree with the sloppiness comments, even more so than one would expect - although I did dig a bunch of the moves to the outside. RVD gets a "you fucked up" chant when he somewhat misses the split-legged moonsault. Sunny showing up was a surprise, clean finish comes after a load of interference and fun teased spots (and I really lament that Greetings from Asbury Park is a very banned move nowadays - so cool looking). **1/4
  17. Loved Ric breaking out Bret's figure-four on the ringpost move. Neidhart barely makes it through the interview with Gene but does a decent enough job to draw out Flair. Loved Flair dropping a Davey Crockett reference. He was just on fire in the lead-up to Souled Out.
  18. The match is (rightfully) not shown but I remember absolute crickets in the arena. No one cared about the NWA belts being in the WWF in 1998. In hindsight, pretty cool that the RNR Express were there though.
  19. Triple H calls it "State College University" instead of Penn State, which made me laugh - having been there at the time. I remember seeing the limo outside the arena before the show also.
  20. Awesome moment when Kane and Undertaker posed together to end the show. This was my first live show and that entire segment pretty much cemented that I was hooked for life as a fan. I remember marking out huge for Undertaker (who also got to beat around Rocky in the dark match after) during all this.
  21. Is this Sandman's best match ever? The brawl around the arena features a fan yelling "You're a pussy Sabu!" - which couldn't be further from the truth. The brutality is really ratcheted up here but each setup and eventual spot is really well done. The teeter-totter looks vicious but is part Sabu selling and part camera angle. Then we get to the broken jaw and barbed wire stuff as things just escalate. The broken jaw makes the finish even more devastating and logical - essentially it's a full force baseball swing to the broken face of Sabu. I don't see how these two could have a better "match" than this. ***3/4
  22. ^ What a gem this was to stumble upon. I went **** also. I mean, Gannosuke used a missile dropkick to continue to attack the elbow during his control work. Just awesome. Brutal powerbomb through the table and after all that arm work, the match still had a lot to go, and it never felt too long. Really built to something epic with all the kickouts at the end before the finish. Absolutely a must-see on disc 1.
  23. I get a bunch of questions about subscribing to the Wrestling Culture podcast. There are details on the main WC page at PTBN including the direct link on iTunes: http://placetobenation.com/wrestling-culture/
  24. On Episode 57 of The Wrestling Culture Podcast, Dylan Hales and Dave Musgrave discuss current topics in wrestling including TNA, the G1 Climax tournament, SummerSlam, and other rambling topics. http://placetobenation.com/wrestling-culture-podcast-57-tna-g1-climax-summerslam-and-more/
  25. Another two hours of WCW programming each week - being a freshman in college and really just getting into the product, I was pretty excited for this. The over-exposure of talent happened pretty quick but big card for the debut show.
