Any time I'm in the car by myself (45 minute commute is a big chunk of this) I'm listening to either shows on the PTB feed or the PWO-PTBN feed. I'll mix in some retro video game collecting podcasts to switch it up. Sometimes during the day, depending on the level of focus needed, I can burn through some shows as well. Sports shows are easier in that environment because you feel less like you're missing something if you focus on real work for a bunch of it.

Wrestling Culture Episode 60

Almost finished Part 1 - two quick notes: - Bravo to Parv to no-sell that stinky bait Will was fishing with around Dory - The heel run Johnny was talking about with the Undertaker was post invasion and through the summer of 2002. This included matches with RVD, The Rock, Hogan (title change) and most notably Ric Flair at Mania x8. He was an excellent heel there and I think this coupled in with his role in the corporate ministry during the attitude era is what got him on the list. Not saying all together this is top 50 worthy, but guessing that's why they included him.

Sidebottom-> I believe that is next week after RAW.

Dylan - I'm interested in your thoughts on the Flair match. I watched it yesterday, Keirn seemed blown up 8 minutes in and was pretty sloppy in spots (crossbody being extremely noticeable).

This was a fun watch, although I thought it was uneven at times and a bit choppy to be a true classic. By the end I did feel like we had gone off the "cliff" as Chad put it when it came to believable damage but a good, definitive finish. Had no context or history on this one (tag partners heightens it for me in hindsight).

[1998-01-26-WCW-Nitro] J.J. Dillon bans the powerbomb

I give them credit for immediately writing and working an angle around this and since the Giant was "ok" it was less cringe worthy to see the replay 400 times.- 9 replies

Ah the late 90s frat house - white room, radiator, paddles on the wall. Agree with the above, this did make WCW look cool.

^ See, I always thought that was because the fence links were breaking so they were trying to walk on the bars as much as possible.

Man, I was trying to write up a response before Parv got in with "He is my least favourite wrestler of all-time" and I missed my window! I think one could make an argument for Orton's longevity hurting and helping him. On one hand, he's worked with a lot of talented guys and *has* had a number of exceptional matches. On the other hand, we've watched him on TV non-stop for 12 years - through different heel and face iterations and he's a touch played out. Loss made a comment in one of the Orton microscope threads about how often he's been a victim of bad booking. The post title-win in 2004 and his early 2009 come to mind for me there. He was super hot as a heel going into '09 and they killed him with the McMahon feud. I don't know if he'll make my top 100 but I think, given his career, he's worth discussing.
-
I'll throw one out that can't be lumped in with the "Orton only has good matches with great workers" vibe from the "Does anyone give a shit about Randy Orton" thread that is also in the Microscope: vs. Batista - Extreme Rules 2009 (Cage Match) These guys waste no time with any build or fluff, Orton's goal is to escape at any moment and avoid getting demolished by a pissed off Batista. He's almost out (I wouldn't call this a visual escape) when he decides to punt Batista (he punted him earlier in the year, which is what set up this return feud post Mania) and I love when Orton misses that he immediately runs up the turnbuckle and tries to escape, knowing he was f'd. This is sub 10 minutes and there is little wasted at all. Underrated and mostly forgotten - probably due to Batista being hurt and surrendering the title right away.
-
Randy Orton See: "Are there any great Randy Orton matches?" thread from the Microscope for initial evidence warranting his inclusion.
-
^ There are times where I enjoy the unpredictable-ness of hitting finishers early (Angle/Austin at SS01 for example) and IIRC their build here was to play off all the Orton punting to that point - it just went over flat (and they showed the dreaded face-on camera which showed how bad it whiffed). I guess I liked the skeleton of the story they wanted to tell a bit more than others, but definitely agree that post-Taker they could have done things better. The stipulation (as we both noted) was one of the worst Mania ones ever.

Pro-Wrestling Super Show - ECW November to Remember '97
bradhindsight replied to Grimmas's topic in Publications and Podcasts
About time my man! -
He's talking about referring to him as The Living Legend back in the late 70s/early 80s.

Really good interview. Liked how Tito was really interested in hearing the feedback for the show as I'm sure he's not exactly talking about the AWA, Johnny Rodz, or learning comeback techniques from Mr. Fuji every day. Tito really impressed me with his memory - calling back to cities where matches were, not skipping a beat.

I think the crux of Bill's question is, can a sub 10-minute match really be considered great, or is it handicapped compared to great 20-30 minute matches? This is a good question. Is there a lack of psychology or narrative due to the time constraints which holds it back? Yes, you can tell a story in any length of match, but can you tell an all-time ***** story in that short amount of time?

re: WWE - Kevin Kelly told the story that it was down to AJ and someone else from a tryout to get into OVW and despite KK pressing for them to go with AJ, they passed given his size.
