I'm just going to point to the idea of diminishing returns. On this and the now announced Piper match. WCW has way more they could be going with, but they can't get past the things that just worked to get to them.

[1997-01-27-WCW-Nitro] Randy Anderson, NWO, Rick and Scott Steiner
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I especially loved Bischoff telling the Outsiders not to be bullies in one sense, then going on to bully both Anderson and the Steiners with corporate nonsense. Scotty throwing the belt down, then Rick picking it up to throw it down again was amazing as well. The detail by Nash and Hall to complain about the Steiners breaking the belt was really good too.- 8 replies

Hogan is an incredible heel promo still here. I do love the trolling by talking about Hogan's amazing technical wrestling feats. I question making the Hogan/Giant match again for the third time in two or 3 weeks.

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
If this was going to be the finish here they should have done something different on the preceding Nitro. I guess they did include a guitar (why?) in this one. Either way, the nWo beatdown of Hulk's opponent is starting to get a little old.- 8 replies

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Eddy Guerrero vs Syxx (Ladder)
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I thought both guys worked hard and blew some spots. Eddy taking the ladder to the knees had to really suck. As ladder matches go (and I don't particularly like ladder matches anymore) this was acceptable. I've also noticed while watching all the Nitros from 96 that Eddy as a white meat babyface is a little less than compelling. Hopefully the heel turn and subsequent matches are as good as I remember.- 13 replies

Not a fan of the finish. I do feel like the Steiners work against the Outsiders as you get to see those two big, cocky heels get tossed around like ragdolls. Crowds tend to like that kind of thing.

[1997-01-25-WCW-NWO Souled Out] Diamond Dallas Page and the NWO

As long as there is not a third version of this I am fine. What is with the hyper-repetitive booking?- 7 replies

Bobby Eaton working security and the stairs bump were great. The rest (and the Nitro match the previous night) were clearly trying to recapture the craziness of the 96 version. I get that the live crowd ate it up at the time, but Sullivan had to know this would come off as a lesser version of that first one.

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I also liked this one better than Starrcade. Dean peppered in more highspots as the match went on and went to the mat less, which was what the crowd wanted to see. Watching this matchup over a few iterations, two things bother me that are out of the wrestler's control. 1. 90s wrestling fans really wanted to chant "USA" at somebody. To a very disturbing degree. They chanted that at Ultimo during a Rey vs. Ultimo match. When nobody in the match was born in the U.S. 2. Dean's gimmick absolutely sucks. It kind of requires him to drag whoever he is against down to the mat and kill the crowd dead. I'll also say that I don't buy the "Dean was held down" argument. If you want to look at it as him never being in the main event I kind of get it. But he had no business in the main event due to how he either chose to wrestle or had to based on the gimmick. He was pushed throughout 96 as the main guy in the cruiserweight division. Yeah, he lsot to Rey and Ultimo. But he always comes back to reclaim the CW belt. The announcers practically call it his belt while both of the other 2 have it. Dean was absolutely pushed, despite some very obvious problems in his matches.- 13 replies

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] The Giant promo
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I was surprised at how good the promo was. I'll agree the production could have used some work. Were they trying to get the Giant over as a regular guy with that wardrobe choice?- 7 replies

[1997-01-21-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXXIV] Lex Luger vs Scott Hall

Luger gets to look really good and keep his heat without killing anyone in the nWo with a real loss. Works for me.- 7 replies

Hogan as a heel is super fun. He's ridiculously over the top whether he's melting down after his loss or piling on the nonsense and verbal abuse when he knows he is safe. I'll agree that him screaming for security to let the Giant through is fantastic.

Bischoff as a slimy heel worked either if you hated him because you thought it was real or just appreciate his commitment to the bit and ability to pull it off. I know it got old after a while, but it's still pretty fresh here.

This was indeed a great episode of Raw. The tag match was really good, Bart vs. Farooq was okay but forgettable. The angles were all really great and the main event was a really good brawl between Austin and Taker. Super hot crowd as well!

[1997-01-20-WWF-Raw] Gorilla Monsoon, Steve Austin and Bret Hart
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
I'll agree this is awesome and the WWF is really building some momentum here. -
I really enjoyed this one. Ishikawa doing a jumping headbutt to counter Ikeda's strikes and putting him down for the partial count was super awesome. The targeted attack of Ikeda's leg making him much less of a factor as the match went into the finish was great too. Usuda having to carry the load for his team was a really cool part of this match. Ishikawa roughs him up for sure, but he weathers the storm and is able to finish off Ono while Ikeda tackles Ishikawa out of the ring. Really great match.

I completely agree with everyone on this being absolutely great and exactly what the WWF needed. I am surprised at even in November and December of 96 hearing on Raw how Vince is the owner of the WWE. I hadn't thought that happened before Montreal.

[1997-01-13-WWF-Raw] Sid promo / Interview: Shawn Michaels

Sid's promo was absolutely great. Shawn's was pretty bad. And he spent half the time not looking at the camera.- 13 replies

[1997-01-13-WCW-Nitro] Diamond Dallas Page and The Outsiders
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
Amazing angle and the WCW has a new top babyface. I caught the bit with Starr really making the cuter look weak by rushing it. I'm not gonna say WCW gets everything right, but some things are absolute perfection.- 14 replies

Sid's promo is sure all over the place. Shawn's new act has worn thin after two weeks. This against one of the strongest Nitros in a while is really not good.

I was wondering how Bret's knees weren't driven through his chest on the first Vader bomb. Not great match. Terrible commentary with Michaels at his absolute worst. Then way too much going on at the end, and it wasn't all necessary.

The end of this segment saved it. The nWo beatdown of the Giant went on too long. I loved the Hogan promo and thee way the nWo were arrayed around the entrance as they came in, waiting for Hollywood. The ending of the angle is tremendous, with Sting starting to show his true colors and the Giant looking like an absolute beast.
