The promo was definitely on par with the really fun Memphis-style match with Bubba. It didn't seem near babyface enough for how he had wrestled. Super fun match that the crowd ate up.

Great angle, Hogan is especially great taunting Liz and really pissing the crowd off. I'll agree Savage had an entire year of taking beatings. I'm wondering who actually believed Savage would beat Hogan at HH at this point. The whole nWo/WCW vehicle thing is getting a little old.

I don't remember Booker being so boring in between the highspots as a wrestler. Is that part of the whole heel tag team thing? Foreshadowing where we are goingwith the tag titles here with the nWo continuing to take over.

Again, this is the best story in the company right now. 'Taker, Paul Bearer and Mankind are all great in these vignettes and it says something that they don't even need to be on TV in person for this to be my most anticipated match they are building to.

So a career pro wrestler was in fact NOT a professional singer???? I am shocked, shocked and appalled. Mostly at the complete lack of any sense in continuing to air this garbage.

[1996-09-30-WWF-Raw] Vader & Jim Cornette vs Shawn Michaels & Jose Lothario
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
Vader getting the clean win over Shawn was good. Should have happened in the first PPV match to put Vader over as a huge threat, but that's not what we got. Even Vince made more than a few bad booking decisions. -
Love seeing some of the Buried Alive match build represented. It's easily the best thing the WWF has going right now. The match was really good, but ultimately doesn't do much for Austin.

They did this for the lawsuit? You'd think Vince might have some other priorities right about now.

Good thing Vince was on point and trying to do stuff that might, you know, get better ratings than WCW was.

Before the nWo ran out of steam it was really, really good. They are pushing it a little bit here, but the end result is still great. Still not a fan of Vincent joining, but he is mercifully not present.

Good promo for Bischoff. Not good that he went missing late in the broadcast.

That whole hour of TV is must-see. It's incredibly bold and visionary. Its also a bit of a train wreck. By this point had they come upon the idea that the nWo would get it's own show? It kind of seems like it. I really wish they had skipped Vincent BTW.

Macho pulls this off really well. Not that it does him any good later in the show.

[1996-09-23-WCW-Nitro] Chris Jericho vs Mike Enos
dawho5 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in September 1996
Super fun midcard match ion Nitro for sure. Jericho s the "take a licking and keep on ticking" babyface is fine. But it definitely does not stand out on Nitro.- 3 replies

Again I am starting to like Mero. He is a dollar store version of WCW cruiserweights, but it works because the rest of the WWF is pretty vanilla. Admittedly he is super sloppy and doesn't quite hit anything right. But at the very least he gets to show some athleticism beyond one signature spot. I don't recall anything about Perfect involving Mero, but it's pretty clear Perfect is setting him up for something. Mero is also a not great promo, which has to work against him in the land of Sports Entertainment. Also, the crowd booed when Sunny was thrown out. I wonder who is really over between Mero and Sable when the Sunny/Sable confrontation got the biggest pop of the match. As an aside, making sure that they got 3 long-ish plugs in for the Mankind/Undertaker match at the next PPV on this Raw is smart. They clearly knew that they weren't going to push Mero too far by this point and nothing else on this show was worth watching.

Incredible promo. JR could have been a great manager and a great PBP guy. I think I like him more as PBP though.

What was this meant to accomplish? And I say that for the entirety of this Raw. Not only did they do very little of substance that helped their image (the IC match was the only good thing about this), but they muddied the waters in every match with a guest commentator who had nothing to do with it advancing some other storyline.

[1996-09-16-WWF-Raw] Owen Hart vs Marc Mero / Interview: Bret Hart
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
It makes sense that commentary doesn't care about the match. I remember hearing somebody (a former wrestler) talk about how Hall told them it was a complement that the announcers can out over other stuff during their match. It means they don't need the commentary to explain a lot, their work speaks for itself. I'm not sure I 100% buy that, but at the same time if you are a reliable worker who can be counted on to put on good matches it does make sense they would schedule this stuff while you are out there. And it seems to happen a lot. Fun TV match. I wish the WWE had kept going with Mero as he is a little sloppy, but there are a ton of good matchups with current guys and folks who come in a little bit later. It also brings a different vibe to the show with matches like these. Say what you will about Bischoff, but he got the variety show element right in WCW. You had the cruiserweights, the hard-hitting midcard guys, the occasional martial arts guy that could work (not looking at you, Glacier), the tag team division and the main event stuff. You may not love one or two of those elements, but the stuff you do is well-represented enough to keep you coming back. WWE very often is a one-trick pony. -
Syxx was a really good addition. In theory the Giant was. Until the thought occurs that everybody here is meant to be cannon fodder for Hogan at the end of the day. The Giant as cannon fodder seems silly.

Turning his back to the hard camera was a great choice by somebody. Another great addition to the early nWo story.

I actually enjoyed this as what it was. A perfectly fine match with a big angle attached to it. The Arn vs. Hall stuff was a fun brawl. But it wasn't built as that. It was built as a huge end-of-days thing for somebody. Only problem is not everyone worked like that's what it was. The sting stuff was really good and totally deserved on WCW's part. Very easy to tell it wasn't Sting. On the other hand, if the nWo is going to flourish you kind of need something like this. Maybe you have the Horsemen tone down their promos going in though. Which goes to the argument that maybe War Games as a thing we have to do is less than ideal if you aren't going to do it justice or it doesn't play to the workers' strengths.

[1996-09-15-WCW-Fall Brawl] Randy Savage vs The Giant
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
This is where they stop protecting the Giant though. Savage should not have been able to slam him. There are other ways to get to the elbow drop. not a bad finish though. If Nick Patrick wasn't under such suspicion that spot wouldn't have worked.- 7 replies

What a great angle. The thing that makes the nWo a huge threat is not that they could take out all the wCW wrestlers at once, but how manipulative they are. With a limited membership and continuation of the hit-and-run tactics they could have been much, much bigger and gone on for longer.

[1996-09-09-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Lex Luger, Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
dawho5 replied to Loss's topic in September 1996
The one thing I was thinking here was that Arn is very soon out of the picture for a long, long time. And asking myself one question. WHY?!?!?!? The man was on fire with his promos. I know Bischoff wasn't high on Flair and that's an unfortunate thing. The unfortunate side effect is that Arn is not leading the charge against the NWO with his amazing promos.- 7 replies
