Hall has kind of dropped some of the Razor tropes here. He has roughly the same cadence, but seems to be trying for something different now. One of the weaker NWO segments so far, but the last one was a humdinger of a doozy so maybe it doesn't need to set the world on fire. Maybe they are letting it breathe (and giving the folks a chance to order the replay of the PPV) for a week before they open up again?

Full match was really good and absolutely old school. Loved Sting's promo as well, he and Schiavone both hit it out of the park in their reactions. Saavage may be trying to appear more off the rails than he was with Flair stealing Liz and all the money, which Bischoff has been pushing on commentary. Which, given the near future, is a little strange.

Seems to me Malenko was starting a heel turn at Bash at the Beach. I think the 2 pulled-up covers is furthering that agenda. I would agree it is detrimental to the match. Really fun spotfest. That Asai moonsault must have felt AWFUL for Rey.

For all the talk about not drawing this out they sure did draw this out. Anyway, good segment, good promo by Sid. Great promo by Corny.

So that interview with Gorilla contained the line "No one man is bigger than professional wrestling." Clearly a shot at the WCW PPV where Hogan claimed to be bigger than wrestling. During the little snippet with Shawn/Ahmed, Shawn mentions how they aren't going to make you wait for their new partner. In a 6-man match. On a PPV. Clearly another shot at WCW. Only thing is, these are weak, ineffectual shots if you look at how handily WCW starts destroying WWF in the ratings. The match itself was one of the better Warrior matches. Possibly because Owen is all kinds of great as a worker when given the chance to be.

One detail that hasn't been mentioned is the first interaction between Hall and Sting after Luger is stretchered out. Hall slaps Sting in a callback to the second or third angle on Nitro. Other than that, not much to add other than this is a pretty good match with really good structure and a SUPER HOT tag to Macho Man. The angle afterwards is legendary due to the whole "changing wrestling forever" thing that Hogan even worked into the promo. Hell of a way to end a PPV, especially with that last line by Schiavone, who is much better than 1997 me remembers him.

I don't love Konnan as a worker. On one hand he is very smooth in his movements. On the other, not one thing he ever does looks like it hurts. Not a great match and Woman did seem to miss her cue.

I have been impressed by Disco playing his gimmick to the hilt on Nitros leading up to this. He may not necessarily be as good as the luchadors in -ring, but as an intersting character he is miles better than most. The crowd getting behind him as he essentially turned babyface throughout the match was awesome to watch. Dean looked good on offense as well, but the story here had to be Disco.

I really liked this one. I also liked the Malenko match better, but I'm weird in my Malenko fandom. The one thing I will comment on here is the crowd. They were dead early and way into by the end. So in terms of opening a PPV, job well done!

Great comeuppance for Sunny after stinging Phineas along for as long as she did. Godwinns get Davey and Vader next week, so Vince mus be about done with them.

AS TV matches go this was great. Marty is, in his own way, more a perfect foil for Shawn than Taker ever was. The counter spots were really good and I really wish Marty hadn't been such a wreck in his personal life. Think of how many great matches we didn't see!

Excellent segment leading to the Bash at the Beach. The NWO really was a thing of beauty even before it fully formed.

That top rope belly to belly was really awesome, as was the Barbie powerbomb. I also caught Zbysko doing his best Gorilla Monsoon impression after the win. I won't hold it against him too much as I very much enjoy Larry Z.

Great angle, but I thought the title switch was a really cheap way of getting the belts off of Sting/Luger. That being said, how else do you do it? Can't really have Booker or Stevie Ray or one of the Steiners go over either Sting or Luger. I would go with the mistake being that the tag titles are on those two guys when they don't really have anyone ready to take them from either.

[1999-05-16-ECW-Hardcore Heaven] Rob Van Dam vs Jerry Lynn
dawho5 replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in May 1999
Too much time setting up and in between a lot of the spots. Some of the "I've seen this before" sequences are pretty good. It really drags a lot as the match goes on though. Probably because after that opening sequence of basic holds they go right into huge highspots that you have to sell big. -
Luger's gaffe was pretty spectacular. The Steiners and the Heat come in and say some inane stuff about the main event to make it seem like a triple threat just had to happen. I did like the matching face paint. Did I misinterpret or did Savage mention Flair in a positive way only three weeks or so after wanting to get in the building so he could kill him?

Garbage. Not the idea that a guy in a wheelchair can still have fire and do well for himself. The fact that we are associating this with Warrior.

Diana is better looking than Sable. I will stand by that. That whole ref thing was just ridiculous. Why even do the whole bit with Perfect in the first place? Not only that, it sets up Shawn (who I openly dislike) to look weaker as the champ and lead babyface of the vaunted new generation. If he's your guy, MAKE him your guy. Removing obstacles instead of having him go through them doesn't do that. Sure Perfect is a shady ref, but there are ways of working around that. Ways that don't involve giving the heels the ability to point and say, "You cheated." The match itself was pretty good. Shawn did carry it with Davey at points being great and other times seeming a little lost. That Liger bomb was all kinds of awesome, as was the dropkick and the finisher tease about 2/3 through the match. The overbooked ending was too over the top. Set up the next PPV on Raw, here it seemed really awkward.

Jake did great selling the injured ribs and Austin looked like a million bucks. Then he cut a promo that pretty much helped to start the biggest wrestling boom of the 90s. Seems like a good night for the guy.

Really fun WCW style match. Mero is much better than he gets credit for, but there are too many things working against him in the WWF. I think he kind of abandoned the whole "make crazy eyes" thing and just came out and wrestled instead, which worked much better than him trying to figure out the character work while the match was going.
-
Even with an off promo, Pillman is out to kill Mero's push even more. If Mero is a wildman, what are Foley and Pillman? How does his gimmick stand out at all with these 2 around?
-
Goldust throws the match away to stay in character, which I am all for. Not sure I love Ahmed getting this push as he doesn't seem like a guy I want in the main event scene. Either way, he fixes that for himself before long.

Mankind getting a clean win over Taker is huge. For all his faults, Vince was absolutely right in pushing Mankind as hard as he did.
