  1. I totally understand why people hated this. It was clearly manipulative and a publicity stunt gone way wrong. At the same time, Taker and Mankind are the only other good thing going on in the company not involving Austin. So them doing something completely outside what they had been doing is probably better than the same formulaic garbage that had gotten them to this point. The fact that it goes off the rails is not awesome. Austin's gimmick/character was going off the rails the previous week though and regardless of how bizarre this seems it does not come across as completely outside of the possibility last week hinted at.
  2. I did not like this. The build to the babyface vs. babyface title match has been full of segments that were obviously there for no reason other than to build for it. Owen (current tag champ) in singles vs. Sid with Davey out with him. Wonder how that one ends. Bulldog (other tag champ) vs. Shawn in a return match nobody wanted to see in the opposite scenario. Then this. It's paint by the numbers in the worst way possible.
  3. The match wasn't much for sure. Also, it was only an excuse to have a big brawl between the SS teams, so there was no way it was going to be much.
  4. A better full match than either of their past outings I've seen. I say that due to the announcers counting this as match 5 and I've seen 2. There were a few more near-botches that they worked well through outside of that guard rail missed spot, but that doesn't hurt it too much. I thought Dean going back to the well on the sleeper spot where the ref has to hold Mysterio's arm up 3 times immediately after the first one was a move in the wrong direction that he did fix right after. I'm a little more with Loss than anyone else on this one. There are spectacular parts and parts that almost seem like them not really knowing how to get back into the flow of things in between.
  5. Savage threatening to kill Hogan is definitely over the top. Also, wouldn't you be considering finding other employment if you were Savage at this point? The guy has been putting anyone worth wrestling over all year with very little coming back his way. He lost to Luger 4 times in something like 7 weeks around January.
  6. Also, the debut of sting using the Slop Drop! Good segment for sure and another worthy chapter in the story of the nWo.
  7. One of the more sensible things the WWF was doing at the time if you look at it as a whole. So much of the other stuff is just completely off the wall or poorly executed enough to make a person not care. At least here you have a couple of over workers (Perfect and Sable) helping to bring some interest to the proceedings.
  8. There are certain types of promos Bret is great at, and this is one of them. He's never been a great "hype" guy, but give him a few topics with some meat he can really bite into and he will give you a really sincere promo it's hard not to believe. Working in the shots at Shawn to show that he's not over that bitterness from WM is a great touch too. I kinda thought he was veering into the cheesy side of things before he mentioned the kid he was talking about was his nephew. One of Bret's best promos I've seen.
  9. The body of the match was really good. I agree that Sid's selling here is surprisingly good. I didn't love the finish with Bulldog blatantly interfering on Owen's behalf for the DQ, but is is what it its. We get more of the "are Shawn and Sid still friends?" thing post-match, which is fine I guess. And probably the point of the whole thing.
  10. One of my favorite Shawn matches of 96 before the run-ins. Well-worked by both and I want to see Shawn work SCSA a lot more.
  11. Taker kills it here in the go-home segment for this feud going into the PPV. Easily the best built match for Buried Alive.
  12. Excellent atmosphere for this promo. I really hope Foley washed that finger cover thingy before sticking it in anybody's mouth after this. This is still easily the best build for Buried Alive. Everything else seems like it just doesn't matter.
  13. I caught all of the detail in the storyline watching the Nitros involving Liz. It seemed pretty cut and dried. Nasties as a babyface tag team opposing Hall & Nash would have worked for a while, they were really over. I just don't see it lasting the two or three years they would have needed to make it work given the timeline. Really good angle, maybe a step down from the preceding nWo stuff, but still really good to great.
  14. What a great promo by Liz. I don't think I've ever seen her talk as convincingly on camera. I'm kinda with Brain and Tenay from the following segment though. Ambushing a guy on his way to the ring for a match with this kinda thing is kind of a dick move.
  15. It was actually really good. They kept it really simple, Valentine is working over Luger's injured back, can he put the torture rack on? And Valentine is a good choice of a guy to do that with as he's a meat-and-potatoes wrestler. Nitro so far this week has been really good for fun matches between guys you may not expect them from. Eddie Guerrero vs. The Cheetah Kid was a little wonky, but oh well.
  16. The promo was definitely on par with the really fun Memphis-style match with Bubba. It didn't seem near babyface enough for how he had wrestled. Super fun match that the crowd ate up.
  17. Great angle, Hogan is especially great taunting Liz and really pissing the crowd off. I'll agree Savage had an entire year of taking beatings. I'm wondering who actually believed Savage would beat Hogan at HH at this point. The whole nWo/WCW vehicle thing is getting a little old.
  18. I don't remember Booker being so boring in between the highspots as a wrestler. Is that part of the whole heel tag team thing? Foreshadowing where we are goingwith the tag titles here with the nWo continuing to take over.
  19. Again, this is the best story in the company right now. 'Taker, Paul Bearer and Mankind are all great in these vignettes and it says something that they don't even need to be on TV in person for this to be my most anticipated match they are building to.
  20. Good video that reminds me that the WWF is actually good at producing this stuff when it isn't a horrible, shitty idea behind it.
  21. So a career pro wrestler was in fact NOT a professional singer???? I am shocked, shocked and appalled. Mostly at the complete lack of any sense in continuing to air this garbage.
  22. Vader getting the clean win over Shawn was good. Should have happened in the first PPV match to put Vader over as a huge threat, but that's not what we got. Even Vince made more than a few bad booking decisions.
  23. Love seeing some of the Buried Alive match build represented. It's easily the best thing the WWF has going right now. The match was really good, but ultimately doesn't do much for Austin.
  24. They did this for the lawsuit? You'd think Vince might have some other priorities right about now.
  25. Good thing Vince was on point and trying to do stuff that might, you know, get better ratings than WCW was.
