  1. Ok, Doc and Gordy - what's going on there? Parv talked at length in his podcast about their rep. In the early 1990s they had glowing testimonials about their work. I really liked the Hansen/Tenryu match in April 90, and a few select others from the year (a Tsurata/Kabuki match has great sympathy on Kabuki) but generally it's aimless enough until a hot finish. I suppose getting to that is an accomplishment in itself - the hot finishes in themselves are worth something. Do they get worse from 1990 to 1993?
  2. Goldberg at SummerSlam '03. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, had been set up perfectly during the match for him to dethrone HHH. It was also really nice to see him truly embraced by WWE fans for the first time. The crowd was molten. HHH's win was a massive kick in the balls, live.
  3. Succinctly put, Johnny!
  4. Cool - what about this one though? Also, could a really good worker allow himself to be carried? Parv mentioned a Tenryu-DiBiase match from 1986. I haven't watched it in ages, can't really comment, but hypothetically could DiBiase - through having complete faith in his opponent/having an off night/being lazy/whatever - allow himself to be carried?
  5. Definitely agree about that last point. As far as direction, we don't know exactly what is said by whom before and during the match.
  6. Is it that standards are higher athletically now, and fans are generally able to see through inexperience? And will recognise the better worker, regardless of result/promotional intent? I remember someone saying that if Foley took the KotR 98 bump now, he would be cheered rather than his face opponent.
  7. Is that like HBK-Diesel at 'Mania? 'Look how much work I'm doing to give you a show and get something decent out of Diesel, before graciously jobbing at the end'?
  8. That's a good point - you really don't read the term 'carried' on PWO much.
  9. All this '93 talk....... I've a lot of watching ahead of me
  10. I've heard talk of Reigns being carried by Lesnar. I don't see it than way, but it got me thinking about whether there's some sort of metric for classifying it? Is it if the carrier could have had the same, equally effective match with many others? Does someone like Ultimate Warrior bring something unique v Savage to prevent it being a carryjob? Also, could a really good worker allow himself to be carried? Parv mentioned a Tenryu-DiBiase match from 1986. I haven't watched it in ages, can't really comment, but hypothetically could DiBiase - through having complete faith in his opponent/having an off night/being lazy/whatever - allow himself to be carried? Also, how much more impressive does the carrier have to be in the match? How much more does he have to do?
  11. Arn and Sid shook hands in a mid-1999 Nitro. I think that was to signify them putting it behind them. Sid also expressed regret over it in an RF shoot sometime prior to that.
  12. That's mid-92. What took you so long? I think he's very good in a tag with Joe Malenko v Can-Ams in early 90, then a tag with Tsurata v Hansen and Spivey (in April, I think). Tsurata gives his credibility a nice bump on 31/08/90 and for there he's off to the races in tags for rest of the year. Great exchanges with Kawada in Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace (AJPW 9/29/90). And doesn't seem out of place in the best 6 man I've seen from 1990 - Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada & Kenta Kobashi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi (AJPW 10/19/90) Maybe I'm projecting a bit, knowing how good he becomes and I'm willing him towards that. But still.....
  13. Parv, how are you finding the four pillars so far? I got the impression Kobashi isn't impressing you yet?
  14. 'That he was a bit bland and didn't stand out much as Hansen's partner, which is fair. He didn't embarrass himself, but then he's not much more than solid in a lot of those matches' I'd agree with that.
  15. 'I don't want to get too sidetracked,' Then don't
  16. How long would it take to catch up? I'm fascinated by how everyone that posts here seems to be at different stages with stuff they've seen/want to see. Shoe wrote in another thread 'I love finding footage of one of my favorite wrestlers that I've never seen before. I've watched a lot of footage so finding something new to me is such a treat'. I'll be at that stage in 2030....maybe.
  17. Grimmas - Often I enjoy discussing wrestling more than watching it. Me - I'm not sure if that last one is a confession. It's hard to imagine being a fan at this level without being able to bounce ideas off others. Grimmas - Sorry, to clarify, enjoy discussing wrestling more than watching wrestling. Maybe that is common? Me - I understood ok, my point was that sometimes the discussion/analysis/reading posts here is more enjoyable than watching for me too. And it would be hard to get to his level of fandom if you were watching in a cave, completely isolated somewhere. Well? Whatcha think?
  18. What was the consensus, Parv?
  19. Just did a quick timecheck (this is hours and minutes) First 2 matches are finished by 0.49 Then it's 1.05 before bell rings for HHH-Sting. That's over by 1.26, then a concert takes us to 1.37. Entire Divas segment takes us to 1.50. HoF and intros for Cena-Rusev brings us to 2.13 for bell time. This concludes at 2.30 Then, Rousey etc take us to 2.58. Undertaker and Bray finish up at 3.27 Enjoyed the pomp and circumstances, to an extent, for the bigger matches. But I still think you should fit more than 7 matches in 4 hours. Oh, this is the main show.
  20. Austin made an interesting point on his podcast review, regarding the Rousey etc segment - with so many 'pregnant pauses', apart from making the segment go too long, it also milked the crowd of enthusiasm that should have been maintained for the subsequent matches.
  21. Thanks for this Chad - 'Hansen - when did he start into this 'older, weary veteran' stage? Was it really with the young lions Misawa and co coming up? I ask because I got to the tail end of 86 in the ajpw 80s set and he was going strong there. - Hansen as an older, weary veteran is an interesting question. I am not sure if by 1993 he is in that stage yet or not. Misawa is able to definitely put him away there establishing himself as the ace. In 1994, Doc is the most pushed gaijin and that might be the catalyst for the transition as Hansen is still a fixture but no longer the main gaijin to go along with the main native inside the promotion.' ....but what I really meant was I see a big difference between Hansen in 86 and 90. He's selling quite a bit more for Misawa than I could have envisioned him doing for a similarly positioned wrestler in 86.
  22. I'm into October and it's black and yellow Kawada and all is right in the world. Of the four pillars, as of this point I see Misawa leading as a complete package, with very little space between the other three. Taue has really impressed/surprised me. And Kobashi - already! - is Mr Electricity. Really glad I decided to go deep with this....
  23. I am totally on board with this thing. Speaking of commentary, I have a hard time watching a match without it. Even commetnary in languages I don't understand help me out. Fan cams and such are difficult for me, they feel incomplete. If a match has a great finish (doesn't have to be a clean pinfall to be great) I will probably like the match, regardless of the rest of it. Often I enjoy discussing wrestling more than watching it. 25. It's the stone cold stunner variation he uses, Garretta. (Hey, look at me - Actually bring something useful to an All-Japan chat!)
