Flair's podcast (WOOOOONation)
BigBadMick replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I think he meant he'd never seen Bret use it. Again, the thing about Flair is he's very self-centred. That's not necessarily a bad thing for a wrestler, but it becomes apparent as soon as he steps out of his bubble. Foley was able to run rings around him during their 2004 shoot feud and mercilessly tore through Flair's critique of Foley in his (Flair's) book. -

I always get the impression he's talking about the Stampede style - quicker, stiffer, with influences from Europe, Puerto Rico and anywhere else Stu could get guys from - and the 'invasion' into a staid, big man style in New York in 1984. He wrote of himself, Davey and Dynamite as stallions coming in to update the WWF style. I agree that when it comes to specific innovations in offense he doesn't have a lot to fall back on. Owen was much more innovative, for example. -

Bret always seems to put a great deal of importance on innovation. I can understand that to some extent. In the early 90s I was crying out for something fresh, different and exciting. Nowadays, a lot of fans in their 30s have grown up with some much innovation that they appreciate a sturdy, old fashioned, doing-everything-simply-and-correctly approach. -

I don't think either of them were about to hammer out their honest opinion on who was better. It was a cordial coming together. Now, if you'd been Frost-Nixoning them..... -

I thought it was hilarious when Flair was reminding Bret that he complimented him on the SummerSlam 92 match and Bret told him exactly when and where that happened. Oh Bret..... Also, Flair's fine at talking about his own career but his lack of knowledge of others could become awkward in future. Conrad had to interject that Bulldog-Bret was the main event there. Austin seems to do enough research to at least get by, can't imagine Flair bothering to do the same. -

Really? I thought his 'overlapping generations' spiel was a diplomatic way to handle it. He didn't come up with it on the spot either - he said something similar on the WWE's Dungeon collection dvd a few years back. -

Oh well. Next time.... Do any wrestlers read this board? I'd imagine older guys would appreciate it. -

He talked about Bret on the Meltzer podcast. Said Bret disliked him but it wasn't mutual. And said they get along fine now. Someone should let Bret get a look at this before recording http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/18970-bret-hart-vs-ric-flair/ -
' I'm sure he was too busy playing with his cats to realize he got burned.' LOL!!!!

You might have already stated it, but where - roughly - do you see Ted in your GWE list? Just for an idea of how you're rating him presently.

[1991-01-19-AJPW-New Year Giant Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Stan Hansen

Really enjoyed this. Perhaps a bit old fashioned by Jan '91 in All Japan as suggested above, but I liked it.- 15 replies

Come on Parv. If jdw waltzed into this thread and wrote that you'd have a fit. At least tell us what you've watched of Douglas, and workers with whom you'd equate him. More generally, I'd love to hear some discussion about his ECW run. Again, haven't watched it in ages, so not sure how it holds up.

Also, couldn't help snigger when Chad equated Ventura's tenaciousness - whilst arguing a point - with Parv's personality..... -

Just got around to listening to this today. I don't know if it's the fact that you're covering a really strong show, or that there seems to be so much debate over the quality of four matches (Liger-Pillman, the two Dangerous Alliance tags, Steamboat-Rude), but the quality of analysis for those matches makes this your best podcast so far. A really enjoyable listen, and so much to think about. Watched this event late last year but will rewatch parts of it again. Phenomenal stuff. Thanks! -
I agree that getting down to 100 is very difficult. I think I asked this last year regarding someone else with a lengthy ECW stint (can't remember who) - generally, does much of the work there hold up? Cue Grimmas and Dylan beating me over the head
-
Wow! Surprised nobody's made a case for him yet. Let's see -first important point is the solid tag run with Steamboat in '92/93. The ECW stuff from 93-95 was really good in my memory (probably over 10 years since I watched any of it). Liked the September '95 IYH match with Razor. And thought he was fine in ECW in 96-97, a smidgen below his earlier peak. Unfortunately I really can't speak highly of anything after that. Still, enough in those years to be worth some discussion surely?

Took a little break there but started 1991 with a bang this morning. I see Chad's point about the escalation in Kobashi/Hansen - he's just giving him a little more each time out and the crowd are biting on it nicely. Liked the fact that an umbrella was used to heat up the Kawada/Taue feud, and then they just assaulted each other at ringside during the battle royal. Speaking of which, I'd never seen any here, and had heard there reputation for being awful, but it was quick enough and a few angles were furthered in it. Nice start to the year.

That makes more sense alright.
-
Yeah, that's a good overview. He had a really good 2005 until drafted to Smackdown, a 2007 that got kicked into high gear with the undertaker feud (I wasn't looking forward to their mania match and was very pleasantly surprised), and was a complete revelation in the late '09 - Spring '10 heel role. And added to his resume with last years stint. A few other highlights here and there, but long spells of injuries and poor performances in 05 - 07 and 08 - 09 do blight his run overall....
-
Not being a dick, but what do you mean here Sleaze?
-
Agreed. That's a really good resource.
-
That's ok. It's a bit like someone writing something cryptic on facebook. Drives you mad, but you don't want to be the one to give them the satisfaction of biting....

What exactly were the objections to the observer recap segments? Feels like people are talking in riddles here...
