Where the Big Boys Play #72 - Superbrawl II
BigBadMick replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Just got around to listening to this today. I don't know if it's the fact that you're covering a really strong show, or that there seems to be so much debate over the quality of four matches (Liger-Pillman, the two Dangerous Alliance tags, Steamboat-Rude), but the quality of analysis for those matches makes this your best podcast so far. A really enjoyable listen, and so much to think about. Watched this event late last year but will rewatch parts of it again. Phenomenal stuff. Thanks! -
I agree that getting down to 100 is very difficult. I think I asked this last year regarding someone else with a lengthy ECW stint (can't remember who) - generally, does much of the work there hold up? Cue Grimmas and Dylan beating me over the head
-
Wow! Surprised nobody's made a case for him yet. Let's see -first important point is the solid tag run with Steamboat in '92/93. The ECW stuff from 93-95 was really good in my memory (probably over 10 years since I watched any of it). Liked the September '95 IYH match with Razor. And thought he was fine in ECW in 96-97, a smidgen below his earlier peak. Unfortunately I really can't speak highly of anything after that. Still, enough in those years to be worth some discussion surely?

Took a little break there but started 1991 with a bang this morning. I see Chad's point about the escalation in Kobashi/Hansen - he's just giving him a little more each time out and the crowd are biting on it nicely. Liked the fact that an umbrella was used to heat up the Kawada/Taue feud, and then they just assaulted each other at ringside during the battle royal. Speaking of which, I'd never seen any here, and had heard there reputation for being awful, but it was quick enough and a few angles were furthered in it. Nice start to the year.

That makes more sense alright.

Yeah, that's a good overview. He had a really good 2005 until drafted to Smackdown, a 2007 that got kicked into high gear with the undertaker feud (I wasn't looking forward to their mania match and was very pleasantly surprised), and was a complete revelation in the late '09 - Spring '10 heel role. And added to his resume with last years stint. A few other highlights here and there, but long spells of injuries and poor performances in 05 - 07 and 08 - 09 do blight his run overall....
-
Not being a dick, but what do you mean here Sleaze?
-
Agreed. That's a really good resource.
-
That's ok. It's a bit like someone writing something cryptic on facebook. Drives you mad, but you don't want to be the one to give them the satisfaction of biting....

What exactly were the objections to the observer recap segments? Feels like people are talking in riddles here...

Exile on Badstreet #3 = The Rebirth of the Indies
BigBadMick replied to KrisZ's topic in Publications and Podcasts
ok..... not necessarily what I'd expect in this series, but a good topic! -
Ok, Doc and Gordy - what's going on there? Parv talked at length in his podcast about their rep. In the early 1990s they had glowing testimonials about their work. I really liked the Hansen/Tenryu match in April 90, and a few select others from the year (a Tsurata/Kabuki match has great sympathy on Kabuki) but generally it's aimless enough until a hot finish. I suppose getting to that is an accomplishment in itself - the hot finishes in themselves are worth something. Do they get worse from 1990 to 1993?

Goldberg at SummerSlam '03. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, had been set up perfectly during the match for him to dethrone HHH. It was also really nice to see him truly embraced by WWE fans for the first time. The crowd was molten. HHH's win was a massive kick in the balls, live.

When is someone actually carried in a match?

Succinctly put, Johnny! -

Cool - what about this one though? Also, could a really good worker allow himself to be carried? Parv mentioned a Tenryu-DiBiase match from 1986. I haven't watched it in ages, can't really comment, but hypothetically could DiBiase - through having complete faith in his opponent/having an off night/being lazy/whatever - allow himself to be carried? -

Definitely agree about that last point. As far as direction, we don't know exactly what is said by whom before and during the match. -

Is it that standards are higher athletically now, and fans are generally able to see through inexperience? And will recognise the better worker, regardless of result/promotional intent? I remember someone saying that if Foley took the KotR 98 bump now, he would be cheered rather than his face opponent. -

Is that like HBK-Diesel at 'Mania? 'Look how much work I'm doing to give you a show and get something decent out of Diesel, before graciously jobbing at the end'? -

That's a good point - you really don't read the term 'carried' on PWO much. -
All this '93 talk....... I've a lot of watching ahead of me

I've heard talk of Reigns being carried by Lesnar. I don't see it than way, but it got me thinking about whether there's some sort of metric for classifying it? Is it if the carrier could have had the same, equally effective match with many others? Does someone like Ultimate Warrior bring something unique v Savage to prevent it being a carryjob? Also, could a really good worker allow himself to be carried? Parv mentioned a Tenryu-DiBiase match from 1986. I haven't watched it in ages, can't really comment, but hypothetically could DiBiase - through having complete faith in his opponent/having an off night/being lazy/whatever - allow himself to be carried? Also, how much more impressive does the carrier have to be in the match? How much more does he have to do?

Arn and Sid shook hands in a mid-1999 Nitro. I think that was to signify them putting it behind them. Sid also expressed regret over it in an RF shoot sometime prior to that.
-
That's mid-92. What took you so long? I think he's very good in a tag with Joe Malenko v Can-Ams in early 90, then a tag with Tsurata v Hansen and Spivey (in April, I think). Tsurata gives his credibility a nice bump on 31/08/90 and for there he's off to the races in tags for rest of the year. Great exchanges with Kawada in Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace (AJPW 9/29/90). And doesn't seem out of place in the best 6 man I've seen from 1990 - Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada & Kenta Kobashi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi (AJPW 10/19/90) Maybe I'm projecting a bit, knowing how good he becomes and I'm willing him towards that. But still.....
-
Parv, how are you finding the four pillars so far? I got the impression Kobashi isn't impressing you yet?
-
'That he was a bit bland and didn't stand out much as Hansen's partner, which is fair. He didn't embarrass himself, but then he's not much more than solid in a lot of those matches' I'd agree with that.
