[1986-07-27-WWF-Toronto, ONT] Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat
JKWebb replied to paul sosnowski's topic in July 1986
Yeah, this match is great! I'd say it's my third favorite of their matches I've seen, and that's high praise. I think I'd probably rate it around the same too. I thought Steamboat did such an excellent job selling his fatigue down the stretch. I've seen: 07/27/1986 - Toronto 11/22/1986/taped 10/28/1986 - Superstars 01/10/1987 - Philadelphia 01/27/1987 - Ft. Myers 02/15/1987 - Toronto - My personal favorite of the bunch. and of course, Mania III - 03/29/1987 Any recommendations out there for something I may have missed? I think all of these matches are fantastic. If you watch them in order, you really have such a great story. If I'm missing any, somebody point me in the right direction. -
Went on to the NO DQ match from Toronto. This is my favorite of the feud so far, and I doubt it will be topped. My favorite from the Steamboat feud also took place at Maple Leaf Gardens. This one took place on 05/04/1986. This match starts of pretty heated. You even have Santana nailing him with a chair within the first minute or two. It's a great match with lots of brawling. Savage gets busted open on the ringpost. It's a total classic. There's an entrance ramp at ring level, and my favorite spot was probably Tito bouncing Randy's head off of it. It looked pretty brutal.
-
Which Savage/Santana match is considered the best? The link above has expired. I've been watching a few today (including the more well known 02/08/1986) where Savage wins the IC Title. But, is there a certain match anyone around here would recommend seeking out? The MSG match from 05/19/1986 was pretty awesome. Bruno was the guest ref and Adonis interferes. Great spot in the match where Savage nails Santana in the back of the head with his knee. The crowd is nuts for the end.
-
I'm glad you both were so high on this. When I watched it the first time, I thought it was the greatest Lucha match I had ever seen. It was one of those few times where I watched it twice in the same day. I can say it is currently my personal favorite Lucha match, and it's definitely in the discussion as the best. I'll be watching it again after reading through these reviews. Of course, *****.

I just watched the 6/3/89 match from Boston, and went ahead and checked out 10/10/89 from London. They worked the chair spot in to both matches. The crowd loved it both times of course. I think the June match is better, but they were both really fun. Hogan has Liz with him in London and she gets involved (and Sherri gets involved) quite a bit. I also googled the Bockwinkel match, because I wasn't sure if I saw that or not on the Memphis set. Tito Santana vs. Savage popped up from 10/19/1985 (Puerto Rico) instead, so I watched it. It's not a good match, or really a match by any means, but it was interesting. It was raining, so they had to work around that, and there were water puddles in the ring. Savage is the guy that drew me into wrestling as well. I'm going to try to spend some time looking into whatever I can find that I haven't seen before (or haven't seen in long time).

[1987-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania III] Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat
JKWebb replied to Superstar Sleeze's topic in March 1987
Savage does an amazing job selling that left arm early on, and I love the all the callback to the neck damage. I too still think I like the Toronto match more than this one, but what a great moment this is. The foot on the ropes at three, after the chop, is probably my favorite part. I also love Ventura calling this match. He says it may be the greatest wrestling match he's ever seen. A lot of people agree. It's definitely a match that continues to grow on me more and more throughout the years, which is probably different than some. The more I watch it, the more I appreciate the little things and thought that was put in to making this match a classic. -
"The Colossal Jostle" @ MSG King Kong Bundy had interfered in one of Andre's previous matches and delivered several splashes giving the big man a "broken sternum," so Andre is out for revenge here. They lock up and Andre gives him a huge chop, chokes him, and another humungous chop sends Bundy out to the floor to think about it. Bundy comes in and they start going back and forth. The MSG crowd is eating it up, and it feels like big moment. At one point, Andre delivers a big headbutt to Bundy, which sends Bundy over the ropes and to the floor! AWESOME bump from Bundy. If you like seeing two big dudes square off and punish each other some pretty big blows, then I think you'd enjoy this match. Of course, there are some good moments where Bundy is standing on the sternum and dropping knees in that area. This is a fun encounter without a clean finish.

Thanks! Mid-South 80's and 1991. Probably Mid-South first to take a 90's break. Also trying to keep up with the P2B guys watching 80's WWF.

I made my way through the list, so thanks for putting it together Loss! It was fun to discover and revisit everything that I could from your list. I made comments in the threads for the individual matches in the match discussion archives. My favorite discoveries that won't make my top 10 - (or matches that I had not seen before): - Toshiaki Kawada vs. Gary Albright - 10/25/1995 - ****3/4 - El Dandy vs. El Hijo del Santo vs. Negro Casas - 12/06/1996 - ***** - Furnas and Kroffat vs. Kobashi & Kikuchi - 5/25/1992 There were a lot of other discoveries that I loved. I'm just going off of the top of my head. Those were the top three. My biggest surprise was the placement of Steamboat vs. Rude from Superbrawl II. That's ****3/4 for me, so I couldn't see how it would be in the bottom 50 of 500 comparing it to one that was two spots higher with Eddy G. vs. 2 Cold Scorpio (4/8/95). But hey, to each his own. Here is my top 10 after watching them so closely together. The great thing is that I discovered I have a new MOTD. I had previously had 6/3/94 over 1/20/97. 1. Misawa vs. Kobashi - 1/20/97 2. Misawa vs. Kawada - 6/3/94 3. Misawa & Kobashi vs. Kawada & Taue - 6/9/95 4. War Games 1992 5. Hansen vs. Kobashi - 7/29/93 6. Kobashi vs. Akiyama - 7/24/98 7. Austin/Hart - Mania XIII 8. Misawa and Akiyama vs. Kawada and Taue - 12/6/96 9. Savage/Warrior - VII - For me, I include the entire package 10. For 10, I want to list three (call it tie) - favorite Lucha - I think it would be 12/14/90 (Dandy/Satanico) - NJ - Liger/Sano 01/31/90, and I really think Steamboat Rude from Bash 92 is right here too. I think that match is worked beautifully. Well, that's where I'm at right now, but it's off the top of my head, and I'm sure it will continue to change. Thanks Loss! Great list. I couldn't imagine trying to rank 500. It felt like it took forever to decide between 10! (Which turned into 12)

#1 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ Well, this countdown has led me here. I was pretty excited to watch this match because I had never seen before today. It lived up to the hype. It's not going to be my top match of the 90's, but this match was probably the most fun. I loved Kikuchi's super hot opening swinging those elbows. Kobashi with the save after those two deadly suplexes on Kikuchi was timed perfectly. I don't know what they may have called it, but the lion tamer spot was awesome. Kobashi hit one of the best double-lariats I've seen. My favorite spot might be Kikuchi saving Kobashi after the frankensteiner. Speaking of that, to garretta's point, I would love to see Furnas and Kroffat take on the Steiners in their prime. Man, would that be awesome. I'm not sure where I have this just yet, but ****3/4 to ***** sounds about right. If someone told me this was their favorite match from the 90's, or even if they thought this was the best match from the 90's, I'd totally understand why.

#2 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ Well, in the last shoot-style match (on this countdown) I talked about how I was little down on this style. I guess it's not technically the style as it was just that match, because I thought this was awesome. Like Elliott, I was a little taken aback by the weak punches at the beginning, but when they escalated, I got the idea that they were meant to be more of nuisance than anything. I think that's great. Speaking of escalation, I love the way the entire match grows into the thrilling conclusion. I mean, everyone has talked about it in great detail so far, so I don't have anything else to add to that. But, I do think this is the best shoot-style match I've seen to date. I know there was one from 1990 YB that I really enjoyed, but I can't think of it off the top of my head. This was great stuff, and for this style, it has to be considered a classic.

#3 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ This was too go-go for me. I don't understand why someone would attempt so many dropkicks and missile dropkicks when they don't matter. I didn't see any fatigue, and the match still felt like a sprint by the very end. The moves on the outside had no affect. When they were suplexed on the outside, they were back to the ring within seconds. I didn't see any selling. I saw moments of drama where facial expressions were great, but moments later a DDT would not be sold, or suplexes would not be sold. It just seemed like they took so much punishment to be going that fast by the end. Moonsaults had no affect. I just felt like it was a bunch of stiff moves crammed into roughly 45 minutes as quickly as possible. I know a lot folks love this match, and I think I can see why. So, I'm not meaning this as a shot. I knew that I would post that this wouldn't be this high on a list like this for me, so I just wanted to explain myself. If you love this match, then great. It's just not for me. After I wrote this, I started to look at the other reviews. So, I guess you can count me on the same page as garretta. He may have summed up better what I was trying to say. I agree with you 100% garretta.

[1997-01-20-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in January 1997
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #4 Well there you have it. The MOTD. On my short list for GOAT. An incredible match with an incredible story. Kobashi had me so sucked in. I'd say this is the third time I've seen this match, but it felt like the first. Sometimes something hits you at the right time and moment and this one did that for me this time. I always had it as *****, but I used to have Misawa/Kawada ranked higher in my mind. I don't think so anymore (not taking away from how awesome they both are). A few moments I love... -Kobashi catching Misawa with that monster lariat after he has tried to recover on the outside (knocking him back down to the floor) -Kobashi's perfectly timed fatigued kick out at 2 9/10 after the Tiger Driver '91 -How bad ass Kobashi looks standing beaten half to death taking the final blow from Misawa I really loved the moments when Kobashi had those submissions locked in on the arm of Misawa. So much has been reviewed. It's all great. I have three more matches to go on this countdown, and I'll be surprised if this is topped for me, But hey, I've never actually seen the three ahead of me. So, that's exciting.- 25 replies

[1993-04-02-AJW-Dream Slam I] Akira Hokuto vs Shinobu Kandori
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1993
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #5 Couple of things: -I actually thought of Lawler too in the opening! I did not read the posts here before I watched, so yes I loved how his started. -I too also thought of Magnum/Tully, which seems to be fairly common. Interestingly enough, I thought for this violence level that maybe this went a tad long? I say interestingly because someone said this seems like a longer version of Magnum/Tully, and I'm not sure I liked it being longer because... -like garretta, I was seriously concerned for the performers, man was this violent But hey, I'm not meaning any of that to take shots here. This is the best women's match I've ever seen. The storytelling is off the charts. The selling is perfect. I do think they took their time selling everything and that did let those moments sink in, so in that way ... in some ways... it's better that it was longer. It's hard to put down in words what I was thinking watching this. I don't think it's something I'd enjoy watching again (oddly enough because it's easily *****).- 21 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #6 Well damn, going through this countdown I was so sure Misawa/Kawada (which Loss ranked at 7) would remain my MOTD. After watching this tonight (I had seen it prior, just not so closely together) ... I'm going to have to really think about it. The greatest tag match ever? Yes. GOAT? In the discussion (Clash 6 for me). This is a perfect match. My favorite moment is Kobashi laying over Misawa shielding him. ***** I will add I've never seen the tag Loss ranked at #1, so I'm really looking forward to it.

#7 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ We recently had a thread on the board regarding your MOTD. This was my choice for MOTD at that time. So, I was excited to watch this again today with that in mind. Also, knowing that there are 6 more matches ahead of this match on the countdown has me looking forward to the comparison of the top few matches of the 90's according to Loss. There are quite a few moments in this match that I love, so I'll just name a few: -Misawa in the crab eats a vicious kick to the face from Kawada's free leg -Kawada kicking at the messed up ear of Misawa while Misawa is firing back at his left knee -Misawa taking that killer jump kick from Kawada from off the top -possibly my favorite moment - The headbutts from Kawada that lead to some of the most hate-filled elbows from Misawa I've ever seen -The kicks from Kawada demolishing Misawa in the corner These guys take the time that it takes to let the moments sink in and deliver a masterpiece. I like that someone brought up the commentary too. Even though I did not understand it, I felt it. At this point, this is still my MOTD. This is one of the greatest matches of all-time IMO. *****

[1995-04-15-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Akira Taue
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
I wouldn't argue with ***** at all. I went back and forth on it. It could just boil down to watching it again. There were some parts that I thought drug just a tad, but the finishing moments are so unforgettable. Sometimes I think it boils down to context, and I think a lot of people probably are much more knowledgeable in that sense (around here) than me. I'm about to start the 91 YB, and I have no doubt I'll be on my way to 1995 down the line. Watching so many great matches like this in a row probably has me looking at them competitively at times, and I really shouldn't look at it that way. When you watch stuff like this in a more linear fashion, then you're just along for the ride, and it might be easier to just let it sink in and enjoy the moment that you are currently attached to (or more invested in). I'm not exactly sure that makes sense the way I wrote it, but it makes sense in my head- 23 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #8 The first fall of this match is simply incredible. I was mesmerized by Casas and his scrappiness and use of counters. He was fighting off a camel clutch, and a lot of times wrestlers just sink right in. I love little things like that. Another time, he kicks the hand of Dandy off of him when Dandy is going for an Irish whip. There's all the amazing matwork that's already been discussed. Dandy goes for a Sharpshooter (not sure what he'd call it), and gets a nasty slap in the face from Casas. That's what it's all about for me. I would have preferred a submission or pintail finish after all the big moves in the third fall. But, the excitement of the nearfalls was extremely high. So, I'm not going to let that count against the match for me. There is just too much great to really care about that. *****. I'll add I agree Casas was the MVP, he really blew me away with the stuff he was pulling out.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #9 ***** This match is such a blast and everyone's works it perfectly. A ton has already been said, but it's one of my favorite tag matches of all-time. It's not a knock to say I don't think this (stress on the word think... because I would consider it as far as tags go) is the GOAT, but I won't argue with anyone that says it's in the discussion either. The time flies by watching this. Amazing match. I REALLY love that moment Russian Daydream already called out. So, I have to second that. Kawada wasn't holding anything back in this one.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #10 I'm starting to think I'm never going to be able to get into shoot style the way some do. I can see why a fan of that style would enjoy this, so I'm not knocking it. I just would rather watch something else personally. The shoot style I've seen and enjoyed has more striking and pro wrestling mixed in. The ending of this had some great drama. The holds and counters all looked well executed. It's just not for me.

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #13 They work this match with so much aggression. The kicks in this are so vicious. You can feel so much hatred and Casas is just off the charts with his charisma in this. I think my favorite moment is the punch exchange that leads to Santo out on the floor holding the head of Casas under the ropes and swinging blows all the while Casas is swinging right back. *****

JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #14 ****3/4 I love the the dramatic strike to Misawa knocking his arm off the rope for the chokeslam to the outside. Misawa won't die and eventually Taue is just stomping him repeatedly on the ground. By the end he's clawing at the inured eye of Misawa as his last glimpse of hope knowing his chance has likely passed him by. Misawa has an epic comeback in an unforgettable match.- 23 replies

[1998-10-31-AJPW-October Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Kenta Kobashi
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in October 1998
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #16 ***** It's nice to be watching a lot of these 90's AJPW classics so closely together. I agree with the placement of this. A classic in its own right, but not the match that is come later in the countdown (that had already taken place on 1/20/97). I love the sum of all parts here ... the dominating Kobashi, fatigue, emotion, Misawa won't die, all elements that added up to this classic.- 13 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-50-1/2/ #20 The look of desperation on the face of Otani during the closing moments is incredibly captivating. The vicious limbwork of this match is some of the best I've seen. I'm glad I read this thread to learn of Otani's Dad. That really added to the emotion of the match. ****1/2 ish for me right now...- 23 replies
