  1. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ #255 This match wasn't for me. It seemed like they hit big moves or finishers and just took turns with that for about 15 minutes. Typically, I am not a complainer of excess to the extent of some, but it can deduct from my enjoyment of a match sometimes when it's out of place (or last for a lengthy period). I think this is the most "excess" I've ever seen.
  2. #257 http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ I absolutely loved watching Hansen in this. He's such a bad ass. That Taue big boot into the German spot was awesome. And, holy shit, the finishing stretch! A fantastic match. ****1/2 I'd agree. I love the zoom in on Hansen's face at the start of this thing while he's leaning on the ropes... the grizzled vet... the man ... it reminded me of watching like the Unforgiven or something where the older Clint Eastwood is here to kick ass... so, watch out.
  3. Somebody needs to get Scott a copy of Planet Waves. The version of Forever Young on Bob Dylan at Budokan is awesome too.
  4. Yeah, Jimmy Hart is entertaining in this. But, you're right... it really does not have the energy that you would hope it would. I was hoping for more of brawl, or I guess expecting them to be at each others throats right out of the gate, But, instead, It was like Hammer was working defense and trying to stay out of the way of the possible Karate. To be fair, Steamboat was getting in some pretty stiff shots. Those kicks in the corner looked really good. Valentine was definitely bumping and selling well too. When Valentine was on top, he seemed very methodical. Then finally we get to the big blows... the "shootout." Valentine slows it back down again after that, but the crowd is fired up by that point. I enjoyed the quick battle after the bell. This is a good match, but it just doesn't hit the all-time classic level. ***1/4
  5. I do love Vader, but I'd agree Kawada/Albright was better. That is actually my favorite match in the Top 500 countdown thus far. I'm in the 250s right now.
  6. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ #260 Excellent match. Can't add much to what has already been said, but I'll say I really enjoyed it, and I loved Jumbo's performance.
  7. #262 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ Man, I loved this. This was intense and the brawling on the outside was awesome. I share the same thoughts as Childs. I wasn't exactly sure on the rules, so glad that was all explained here. But, I just loved the performances. Santo was incredible.
  8. #264 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ This match rules. Kobashi comes out with a sense of urgency working with high intensity. He's throwing relentless chops at Misawa. There's a kick to the chin he dishes out that is BRUTAL. Loved the spot where Kobashi is able to block the mighty Misawa elbows, and churns out some devastating neck strikes. Another great spot is Misawa firing out of the corner with some of the deadliest elbows I've seen him throw. This match is worked so damn stiff. I think it might be my fourth favorite match of theirs behind the GOAT contenders of 01/20/1997 and 03/01/2003. I'd also have it below 10/31/1998. I'm sure there are some I have not seen yet.
  9. #266 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ This is a really cool moment. I'd probably go around **** for the match. Sure, it's not the best Hogan match ever, but it's definitely a fun watch. I love how it starts off with a Hogan takedown. That got me plenty hyped. The bomb throwing in the middle is awesome. I also thought it was great how stoked some of the crowd members were when Tenryu kicked out at two after a lariat from Hogan (towards the end). Obviously, everyone was feeling this matchup. I think I actually prefer the Macho Man/Tenryu match to this one, along with all the fun Sherri Martel adds to that encounter. But, hey, I'm a big Randy Savage fan, so that could be biased. This was great.
  10. #267 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ This was alright. It would have made more sense for Blue Panther to be pulling on that tasseled mask the entire time. It seems like the heated bit of the feud was based on the fact that Love Machine had pulled Blue Panther's mask off during previous match and tossed it into the crowd. I feel like Panther should have grabbed those tassels and beat him senseless until he pulled that masked off teaching him a lesson in respect. We do get the callback to a previous encounter right off the bat, which I liked, where Love Machine is beating Panther's head into the ringpost on the outside. Eventually, Panther returns the favor. But, I just didn't feel the heat I was looking for (outside of the ringpost spots). It was quick, and the finish was out of nowhere. It didn't make me feel like it was a big deal to Love Machine for him to be losing his mask (during the match). Anyway, not a classic in my eyes.
  11. #269 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ Yeah, this was pretty great. I liked Vader throwing his weight around when they were on the mat. Around 17 minutes in, there is an amazing exchange of big kicks and a knee from Takada that leads to a monster punch from Vader. That may have been my favorite spot. This is my favorite Takada match that I've seen, but Takada/Sano from '94 sounds really interesting. I'll have to check that out if it's not on this countdown. ***I came back and watched this December of 2019 as I went through the 1994 YB. I was even higher on it. Definitely a MOTYC.
  12. That's interesting. I definitely had forgotten they were clipped. I have the Memphis 80's set, and the Lawler set that WWE released a few years ago. The Blu-ray has the match from '83. But, I doubt it is any different from the version you (we) have. So, I guess I had forgotten the clipping.
  13. #270 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ I loved the staredown after the opening matwork, then the big slap from Kawada. It looked like it actually caused Kobashi's mouth to bleed a little bit. What a spin kick from Kawada onto Kobashi. The Kobashi head chops that led into the Kawada neck chops - what a great spot. They looked absolutely brutal. Kobashi's intensity level was fantastic while working that facelock on Kawada. I also loved his kick to the top of Kawada's head while getting out of (likely) a powerbomb (could have been a piledriver). This had such an incredible finishing stretch. This was great.
  14. My favorite tag match is the Midnight Rockers vs. Rose/Somers that has been mentioned. Parv, I don't remember the versions that I have seen of the two mentioned Lawler/Dundee LLT matches being clipped.
  15. #275 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/2/ These guys don't waste any time tearing into each other once the bell rings. They get right down to business, and it doesn't let up until Kawada hits a big kick to the head of Misawa. I loved how they slowed it down there and let it all sink in. Kawada does a beautiful job of selling his foot at this time, before rolling Misawa back into the ring. There's another super brutal kick from Kawada while Misawa is leaned against the middle rope further into the match. I also loved the elbow exchange leading to the multiple slaps coming out of the corner towards the end. The elbow that finally put Kawada away at the end, again was sold perfectly. Great match.
  16. I was referring to the '83 match when I mentioned Lawler/Dundee LLT, but definitely see the '85 as an equal (or maybe better now that I think about it). Favorite vs. greatest is always a great question. I take more sentimental factors into account when talking about favorite vs. greatest. I love David/Goliath type matches - the big dominant guy vs. the underdog or sometimes smaller guy. As a kid I loved Rocky IV. Stallone was jacked, but you have the big dominant heel. Anyway, for that reason, I always loved Lawler vs. Bam Bam Bigelow and I recently fell in love with Kawada vs. Gary Albright. In my eyes, also based on some childhood nostalgia, the ultimate match like this is Sting vs. Vader from Starrcade 1992. It's the perfect David/Goliath-Rocky IV-80's Action - toe-to-toe brawl. If someone were to ask me the greatest movie off all-time, I might say "The Godfather" or "Seven Samurai" or "Pulp Fiction" (you get the idea). But, my favorite movie is "Back to the Future." Because, I can watch it anytime. It's fun. Well, that's how I feel about Starrcade's Sting vs. Vader. Kobashi/Misawa 03/01/03 is amazing. Definitely a favorite, and would be also be in the running for greatest with me as well. Currently, I'm still going Clash 6.
  17. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ #276 This was hard to watch at first. I wasn't making much sense of it and the announcers sounded like they were calling The Masters (the crowd not far behind with little golf claps here and there). I almost decided to just skip it after the shooting star 2-Count outta nowhere 8 minutes in, but I stuck with it. Hayabusa then starts to mount his comeback, through my eyes just looking like some random cool moves thrown together ... or spots... that Oya kicks out of anyway. It feels like some random suplexes lead to a draw. I hate to be so down on this, because obviously some folks really love this. But, for me, it just didn't click. Not a good match IMO.
  18. The greatness of this match lies in the great selling from Regal and the focused varied attacks from Arn Anderson. Regal has the great selling of the ear in the early going, and Arn focuses on the left arm in different and unique ways. I loved the way Regal fought him off after the hammerlock slam. Regal got a big blow to the back of Arn, but had to shake off the left arm, great stuff. As we get half into the match, Arn shifts to the leg. We get a diverse attack on the left leg from Arn. Again, Regal is great at trying to fight him off and selling these attacks. Arn realizes he is running out of time, so he decides to take this thing to blows. This builds excitement in the crowd as they go back and forth. Instead of relying on multiple finishers for pops (which Meltzer probably would have loved), these guys built excitement through taking this to a brawl, then nearfall pin attempts, and maneuvers trying to lock in the win anyway possible as time was running out. When Arn finally gets the Spinebuster, the crowd ignites. Regal gets the perfect finish for him and for this match. Great encounter of two legends. #277 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/
  19. #279 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-300-251/ I'm thinking this is the first Han match I've seen. I was really impressed, and it's got me hyped for what's likely in store in this countdown, and as I dig into the rest of his career down the line. I didn't come away thinking this was a great match, although I was entertained by Han the entire time. This was fun, and has built a higher degree anticipation for this style than I've previously had.
  20. I watched 2002 yesterday. I absolutely LOVE the Mr. Perfect stuff. It's always been one of my favorite Rumble moments, but overall, I think this years was a better Rumble match from beginning to end. I remember liking 2001 a lot back in the day. I would need to revisit that one. Exactly - to your points on Roman.
  21. I'm with you. I loved the way that Braun and Corbin were booked in this. Also, your thoughts on Jericho as well.
  22. I thought it was a good idea to have Reigns come in at 30. It helped get Orton's win over.
  23. I loved the booking of the Rumble personally. I'd say, as for the Rumble itself, it'd be in the top 10 for me. There are some in the early 2000's I haven't watched in a while. I know I'd have 90, 91, 92, 2007, 2008, and 2010 (off the top of my head) over this, but I do think this would make the top 10. I had no issues with Orton winning. If he's going to be in one of the main events, he definitely needed the W over someone like Taker, Goldberg, or Lesnar. He has a lot of years left in the tank too (unlike those others). Plus, he is full-time. No need to have Joe or Balor as a surprise if they aren't going to win. Mark Henry was a nice surprise. I thought the spear into the RKO was remarkably timed. The card itself was one of the better all around Rumbles. AJ/Cena was great and everything else was at least good. I loved Cena's lariats. Overall, 2007 is better, but this has to be on the higher end of top to bottom Rumble cards. This was a fun weekend of wrestling.
  24. I love Atlantis-Villano III. If I were to have a day of rewatching all matches I thought were contenders, it would definitely be on that list.
  25. I go back and forth on this. Honestly, a lot of times it is what I watched the most recent between these few. 6-9-95 is up there for me, and I plan on revisiting it again with more context. The ones I toss around in my head these days are Clash 6, Bock/Hennig, Magnum/Tully, and Lawler/Dundee LLT. My current vote is Clash 6, but I think I would like to watch all of them back to back someday.
