  1. #312 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I was wondering when this would pop up on the list. I've seen this multiple times, and I too thought this was probably the best WWF/WWE tag match in history (until November of 2016). The pacing of this is incredible. There's so much great stuff going on, but it doesn't seemed rushed at all. It's hard to keep up with all the creative things they are doing (in a good way). I love when Razor gets tagged in and delivers those big blows to Diesel. He sells them so well, and I've always thought Razor had such a great punch. Shawn pulling the hair of Razor in the corner is great (right before the break), and when we come back him sliding between the legs for Razor to hit the lariat from Nash was fantastic. Nash delivered a brutal looking elbow to the center of the back of Razor. I just think everything was so crisp in this match. Everything connected, and everyone was on point. Shawn was all over the place, so he probably is the MVP with all that he contributed. But, there is a reasonable argument for Nash or Razor too. You might not like how long Diesel was out could, but man he sold the super kick perfectly. You have to think the taller the guy, the harder it is to pull off that well. They do a great job building the suspense that Shawn will get pinned while Diesel is knocked out. They are hitting him with everything they've got. Great false finish off the leg drop, and the big boot gets the three. I still love this match. MOTYC.
  2. #313 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I love the intensity in which this starts off. Nothing too unusual for Hansen, but it's just what I want in my wrestling. I thought Hansen was great in the opening stages selling the stiff kicks of Misawa, and particularly the submissions as well. You could really see a lot of pain and anguish in his face. Hansen was ready to bump big for Misawa too. He goes over the top to the outside after a punch from Misawa. Of course, he then suckers Misawa down and goes to work on him. This is where we get the focused work on the right arm/shoulder and the TV monitor spot. Misawa is pretty awesome selling the right arm. When he has to use his right elbow for his signature blows, he's always gripping at it and shaking it off. Hansen stays focused on it with submissions and kicks. I thought the variety of attacks on the arm were pretty great too. Hansen tries to drop an elbow on the arm, but misses. Then, Misawa goes to the top to try and deliver a flying elbow I'm assuming, but Hansen dodges and pushes him to the mat. Misawa sells pain in his neck from the fall, and this is where the focus shifts from the arm when Hansen goes for a big powerbomb to try and put Misawa away. Makes sense to me. The facelock/chinlock wasn't working for Misawa very well, so he shifts gears to power and more elbow. I do think he went to it a little much, but I remained invested. This is a pretty great match. ****1/4. Gottal love the handshake at the end.
  3. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ #315 Yeah, I thought this was really good, but not great. I'd agree with the ***3/4 range. That headlock from Jumbo on Misawa was something fierce, and of course Kikuchi gets nailed a few times with some pretty stiff blows. Really good, but I think we've seen some better AJ tags lower on this list. Pretty cool it's the debut of his chokeslam (Taue).
  4. I believe the actual date for this is 5/3/16. I had heard some saying this was the the last great Liger match to date. So, I finally got around to checking this one out tonight. I loved Liger's work on the left leg throughout and KUSHIDA's selling of it. Liked him barely making the 20-count in the early going. His armbar on Liger looked super painful. It was a little shorter than I expected, or it just flew by. Sure, it's not perfect. But, it's still really good. ***3/4-ish.
  5. #317 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I don't think this is the best Nitro match ever, and off the top of my head I'd go with DDP vs. Sting from 4-26-1999. I didn't think this was too long really. The commentary wasn't saying it was too long of a match, they were putting over the endurance of the wrestlers. I thought this was really good, and I appreciated that they took the time to sell the fatigue, rather just throwing out quicker spots in a shorter match. For me, all that helped get the moment for Psicosis over. I thought it was really good. ***3/4.
  6. The crowd EXPLODES for Angle. Angle comes across as very happy to be there. Big smile on his face. The crowd starts the ZSJ chant when he is introduced, and back to Angle when they call his name. It's apparent everyone is just stoked for this "Dream Match." Angle has a clear size advantage, so that is the story they told, and the commentary team did a good job getting this over. ZSJ gets to kick out of the Angle Slam. They trade submissions, and proceed into the greatest hits. Angle gets the W. It's a quick but fun match. I bet attending live was a ton of fun.
  7. RPW Undisputed British Championship As one would expect, this match is worked super stiff. However, they start things off with Shibata working over the left arm of Hero. When they start getting into the elbow and chops, Hero leans his forehead onto Shibata's daring him to come at him hard. Shibata delivers some stiff blows, then Hero gives him a nice/quick slap in the face. Loved it. Then it's Hero's turn, which he takes with a big boot knocking Shibata to the outside. We get some nice back and forth hard-hitting action on the outside. Hero is more dominant here, leaving Shibata to fight from underneath. Shibata then goes into Terminator mode taking each shot, but walking slowly towards Hero, taking the pain, but pushing forward. It's a trading of hard-hitting maneuvers and strikes from that point on. This is a fun, but sort of quick match. I really enjoyed it. I thought they had really good chemistry, and with a longer match, these two would probably tell a great story.
  8. I thought this was good too. Maybe a little too long, but still good. I liked when ZSJ was wanting to trade chops to the chest, but Marty just poked him in the eyes instead. That's exactly what he should have done, and I loved it. The three piledrivers might have been a little much, but the closing moments of this match were just so damn entertaining. I wouldn't hold it against them. They had the crowd in the palm of their hands the final five to ten minutes.
  9. #320 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I thought first half of this was good, but probably could have been better with some more heel-ish antics from Doc and Gordy. Dustin and Barry delivered here, and I thought they sold really well - sucking the people in, and then delivered on the hot tags. The post-match promo is pretty fun, and I enjoyed Arn on commentary.
  10. #321 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ Yeah, like others, I loved the mat brawling. The strikes to the head and ear of Fujiwara, poking the bear, sucked you into the narrative.
  11. #322 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ I went through the 1990s last year, but I couldn't remember anything about this match. So, I decided to give it another watch today. I love how fired up Jumbo was when he got tagged in, delivers a sweet lariat to Kawada, then an elbow to Misawa on the apron. I've said this in another thread somewhere before, but Jumbo is one of my favorite hot tags in history. I loved when Kawada had Taue in the Sharpshooter, and Jumbo comes in to break it up, but Kawada decides to nail him with a lariat instead of taking another kick. Then, Misawa gets to nail Jumbo on the outside. Again, I feel like Jumbo steals the show after he is eventually tagged in after Taue was worked over for a while. He's throwing out some brutal blows to Kawada and Misawa. Misawa does a fantastic job bumping for him. Once it gets back to Kawada and Taue in the ring, their chemistry is just off the charts. They really get at each other, and it's a great moment in the match. There were some down spots mixed in with the greatness, but overall I'd say this is a great match. These matches are all so great, so when you watch them all together, you may not appreciate each one as much as when you come back and revisit them in a vacuum. But, to that point, I think watching them all together allows you become more invested in the storyline and performances. So, I guess I'm trying to say coming back to some of these individually is really worth it.
  12. I decided to check out the RPW streaming service specifically to check out this match. This was for the RPW British Heavyweight Championship. I skipped ahead, but I'll definitely check out the rest of the show and other cards on the service to see if I want to hang on to the subscription. I thought this was a really fun match! They start out working each other over with submissions, and I liked how the announcers put over that the match could end in an instant. Riddle was great with his expressions throughout. There was a painful looking stomp to the left arm of Riddle from Shibata, so Shibata went to work there first. Riddle got fired up, and then the hard-hitting striking began. Shibata went from corner to corner shaking his head and taking brutal strikes from Riddle while no-selling/taunting him. Then they just started beating the hell out of each other. I thought they told a solid story playing off a kick that Riddle dodged in the beginning and the submissions can end this in an instant comments. There was a knee from Riddle to the neck of Shibata, at some point in there, that knocked Shibata to the outside. It was pretty awesome. This was really good. I'm glad I checked it out... I'll be checking out the rest of the card later.
  13. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/2/ #324 Kawada delivered some great selling in the early going. I thought Kroffat was going to kill Kikuchi a few times! That spot where he was throwing him around like a rag doll was one of the more brutal spots I've seen in a match. I agree, Kawada could have had more fire after all that, but nonetheless this was still really good. You got some really memorable stuff in there.
  14. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #326 I love when Liger gets pissed! He was fired up here because his mask was ripped, and this became a hate filled beatdown with a surprise ending. I really wasn't expecting it. The elbow was a cool spot. Great match.
  15. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #327 Yeah this was a lot of fun. I haven't watched a ton of MPro, so to date it's the best of its kind I've seen. The comedy spots were well-timed and actually funny to me. Lots of great action. Really fun spots. I honestly didn't think I'd care for it going in, but it flew by and it was really good. The arm wringer spot was the best.
  16. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #328 Parts of this looked crazy. Most of it looked very painful. The entire match was violent (of course). For me, there's just not anything I get out of this. You can see them posing to wait for a chair shot, and sometimes it seems like they're just walking around waiting for the next spot to happen. I don't know. No offense to anyone else who would enjoy this, because I think I would have thought it was nuts as a teenager. But my age now, and where I'm at, I didn't really get it. I'll add the only version I found was 12 minutes and clipped.
  17. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #329 I thought this was awesome! I didn't know the significance of this match in Jumbo's career until I came to the thread later. But, that makes it even more special for me. I thought Gordy delivered in spades here. I loved his selling of Jumbo's piledriver in the beginning and loved the big offense he and Williams were throwing out throughout. I really thought this was one hell of a fun match. ****1/4
  18. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #331 I thought this was really good, but I prefer the Taue/Kobashi match that was ranked a little lower the thian one. Taue looked dominant in that and I thought Kobashi delivered a little more emotion (and with his selling) there than Misawa did here. I do think Misawa sold fine, but the ending fell a little flat with how easily he bounced back. I sound negative, but I did like this. I agree hitting the choke slam would have kicked it up. When he popped up after the German, he fell right back down after he hit his move, but I see the point.
  19. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #333 Fantastic! I had a blast watching this. Jim Ross delivered a stellar performance on commentary. I loved Backlund's heel antics. Such a great visual of Bret pulling Backlund by the leg out of the ring so Davey can get the count. Then the moment continues when he won't relinquish the Sharpshooter. Loved it. Crowd was super hot for it too. I agree it falls shy of the Kliq bout.
  20. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ #334 I sort of echo the thoughts of jasch. I too just completed the AJ 80s set, and I had some similar thoughts when watching the match. I didn't think Kawada came across as superior or that Jumbo had aged so much he couldn't hang, but I definitely got the vibe that they were equals and both knew Kawada was younger and likely was at a point he was now with the advantage in a matchup between the two. I enjoyed this. The slap was awesome at the onset, and Jumbo sold his leg well throughout. ****1/4
  21. I randomly ran across this today, and I thought it was pretty good. I'm sure the finish left people unsatisfied at the time, but watching it in a vacuum now, I was glad I checked it out. There's some pretty bad camera work that's distracting at times. But, you get some smart work from AJ and some nice selling from Ricochet. Once AJ focuses in on the left knee, I thought they told a good story until the questionable finish.
  22. I thought this drug a bit early on, but picked up as Generico wouldn't stay down/give up. He worked to make his comeback on Hero, but Hero looked very dominant. Generico got in some nice spots in what I'd consider a good match.
  23. This was worked really stiff and an All Japan 90s influence was evident. Both guys worked really hard, and Hero's elbows just looked devastating. I thought this was pretty fun! Hero also had some really nice submission work that was a highlight for me as well.
  24. #337 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ Yeah, the gaming floor stuff was favorite part. This was pretty fun. I would assume if you're looking to watch something with these two, this has to be on the higher end. This is one of the few Sabu matches I've enjoyed watching over the past few years. I thought when Cactus got his neck caught in the ropes it looked really good. Most of the time, those spots look overly staged to me, but that looked legit. Also, I agree the Sabu post-match stuff is dumb as hell haha. There was a time Jeff Hardy was doing stuff like that post-match on the indies in between one of his TNA runs... I think...
  25. #338 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-350-301/ I loved Kobashi's performance in this. The fighter that won't go down. It really put Taue over as Taue's approach felt more methodical and haunting than anything. He was the dominant big man, and Kobashi was fighting from underneath. They were both excellent here. The slap exchange that escalated to the brawling on the mat was a great moment. That's a cool point about the camera work. I wouldn't have thought about that, but you are exactly right. The way they filmed that powerbomb on the outside was perfect. I love the last big slap that Kobashi delivers to Taue, and then he just sort stumbles backwards and sideways falling down after exerting all he had left.
