The first fall of the match, unfortunately, just doesn't deliver. It sort of has a bland running through the motions with no emotion feel to it. I'd say overall, the match is disappointing. The finish is pretty cool, because Flair starts to go a little nuts wanting to demolish Tenryu's leg, but it's not enough to save the otherwise flat match.

[1992-04-05-WWF-Wrestlemania VIII] Ric Flair vs Randy Savage
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in April 1992
I love the way this starts. Savage looks AWESOME- love the black and gold. He can't wait to get a piece of Flair. Love the pacing and brawling. Flair is chopping hard, and Savage takes a huge back drop over the top to the floor on the outside. Flair goes to work on the back. After Flair gets busted open, Savage looks vicious on the attack. His hands/wrists are taped white, as he pounds Flair in the head you can see the blood stains on his right hand. We get some great selling of the knee later on (from Savage), and the crowd pops for the nearfall with the small package. Savage gets him the second time. The crowd is super into it, and it holds up for me too. This a great match! I echo El-P's sentiments (except this was not my first Wrestlemania). http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #409 -
[1994-11-16-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXIX] Vader vs Dustin Rhodes
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in November 1994
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #410 This match rules. Off the top of my head, this might be my personal favorite Dustin Rhodes singles match. He is a house of fire and Vader, as most always, kills the heel beast role. Dustin sort of surprises you with his strength too. What Chemistry these two had - wish we had more - ****1/4- 10 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #411 - I enjoyed the fire and comeback punches of Kikuchi. They felt like bombs to me too. I thought this was really good.

This was pretty crazy. I was really thrown off when they started following tag team rules, but it was still pretty wild. Somebody mentioned greatest brawls... Tupelo Concession Stand came to my mind, and i don't think is near as good as that. I can see why this is loved by folks, but I just don't see it as a MOTY/great match. It was cool to check out though. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #412

[1990-01-15-WWF-MSG, NY] The Rockers vs Powers of Pain
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in January 1990
I remember going through 1990, and this was my second favorite match of the month only behind Liger/Sano 1/31. I love this match. It's tons of fun. Perfect to throw on anytime, and I think it's one most anyone would really enjoy. A great match (****), and I'm pumped to watch the rematch posted above when I have time. Nice find! This would make a great educational/template match for younger guys on a great way to work David/Goliath type tags. http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #413- 38 replies

I think this was entertaining at times, but there is a lot of stalling in this match. Not the fun kind of stalling, but just Bret laying around and Yoko catching his breath. This kind of leads into OJ's point of Bret not using the offense or theatrical selling enough to make it interesting. Speaking of Jerry Lawler, I think he could have had a better match with Yoko. I'm not trying to slam Bret or anything either, because I like Bret, but I just didn't see this as a great match or a great performance by either guy. It had it's moments, but overall it fell short for me. If I were to watch this again, I'd order a large coffee first. To Loss's point, I do think that Yoko built up the "big fall" well. Particularly the final one in this match. #415 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/

My friend was looking to get an AJ Styles action figure for my son, and we found that the only WWE version of him on Amazon was going for over $500.00 right now. I just checked before posting this, and the one that was listed for $529.00 is now gone, and the are "currently unavailable." The TNA figure is currently listed at $179.00. When I checked Ebay, the cheapest "buy it now" was $119.00. I'd say he's pretty on fire!

This starts off with tons of intensity. Austin is throwing out rapid fire punches. It's awesome. Yeah, the work on the finger is sick, and then on to the neck. The accident is really unfortunate, and I agree that the match is great. It does deserve to be remembered for more than that. I loved Owen's offense. He hits a really sweet German Suplex on Austin, along with tons of other great offensive maneuvers noted above. #416 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/

The one hour MTV special for War to Settle the Score (pre-show, match, and post-show) is one of the greatest things I've ever seen, ha. Alan Hunter says this match has social, political, and artistic implications far above any match in wrestling history. Gene says Piper has gone too far criticizing a particular form of music (Rock n' Roll), and Alan says "do you mean he hit a woman?" - Gene says "Yeah that's what I meant." Dee Snider is hilarious trying to cut promos before and after the match. You get Andy Warhol talking about his love of wrestling - very interesting you guys pointing out he just wandered into the room and cut an unscripted promo. Does anyone else ever think Albano looks like he just ate spaghetti noodles and forgot to wipe his face off? Maybe that's just me. I love they say he was treated with some sort of electric current therapy to turn him back babyface. They brought an element of realism to this with the presentation. Piper is off the charts as a heel - all-time great (maybe greatest) promos. I wonder what would have happened if they put the belt on him? Part of me thinks they would have drawn even more with him on top and Hogan chasing. Hogan's entrance to "Eye of the Tiger" is one of my favorites of his career. I think it's Gene that says if Hogan loses, people won't want to listen to music for years haha. They also have this dinner discussion with music critics discussing the match, and they are talking with their mouth full and purposely using large vocabulary words to sound impressive. I agree with you, the feeling of chaos of this is much higher than that of Mania. I LOVE the brawl, and the entire segment that happens post-match. Piper and Hogan were really taking it to each other. I think I could go has high as *** just because of the intensity - it's fantastic. The whole thing is great, and so entertaining. I think Joe Piscipo was just as surprised as you guys that Billy Squier is there. He starts laughing when Gene says he's about to talk to him. The entire MTV special is on YouTube. I recommend it to anyone that has never seen it. Loved the discussion - great show guys!

I've always loved this match. I've seen it quite a few times. Brutal. Violent. Fast. Agreed on - "what's not to love?" Reed is tons of fun to watch in this one, and the chair shots are nasty. **** Great match. #417 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/

These two have a great chemistry. This starts out at a really incredible pace. This feels like a war. It's brutal and violent and very back and forth. The crowd is really hot for the match, and Jumbo wins quickly with a roll up. The crowd gets molten, and Hansen goes on a rampage. Too short without enough content to be called great to me, but hell this one is entertaining. Edit: Jumbo... did not win this match:)

BE SURE to check out that September 1985 match TG if you haven't already. Total classic that I have at ****3/4. Martel IS one of the greatest ever! This match has a great energy to it. It's hard-hitting, and Jumbo sells his ass off. The crowd is really hot for Jumbo. Martel shows his usual great fire during those near falls. Jumbo starts throwing out anything he can, but he just can't pin Martel. The match ends in a countout and a shoving match/stare down. This match doesn't reach the all-time classic level of the AWA match, but I still loved it, and it's still awesome!

Pretty interesting to see this following KVE's match with Jumbo 2 days prior. Especially after thinking that match with Jumbo might be the best of KVE's career. This match starts very similar with a little amateur spot, but then sets its own pace. KVE takes the first fall with the claw, and Flair takes the second with the figure four. While this match is good, it just doesn't compare to the passion and emotion shown in the Jumbo match. KVE still has two impressive showings here close together. Flair pulls out the W in the third fall with a pretty anti-climactic roll up.

This is fine for what it is, which is a good time. I bet it would have been even more enjoyable live. There were some cool spots. I liked Funk throwing Sabu headfirst into the damaged table at the beginning and Sabu missing Funk later and going through another table. There were some inconsistencies, but I'm not one to pick a match like this apart. This was just fun. Good stuff. And out of Sabu's matches that I can remember, I could certainly see this as being discussed with some of the better ones. I don't see this as a great match or anything, but for this type of style, it's fun. Sabu purposely does a moonsault through a table after the match hurting only himself, which is pretty dumb. I guess it just shows how CRAZY he is (and how smart he is). #418 - placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/

[1984-05-22-AJPW] Kerry Von Erich vs Jumbo Tsuruta
JKWebb replied to WingedEagle's topic in May 1984
The first fall of this is great. I loved how fired up Kerry looked after the amateur exchange. Also, I don't think I've seen anyone sell the fear of the claw and pain from it (gripped on his stomach) more effectively than Jumbo. I'm not trying to slam the claw at all here, but Jumbo gave it even more authenticity in my eyes (for lack of a better term). I guess I mean that some wrestlers give a more cartoonish selling of the move. Anyway, the second fall starts out with a bang! Kerry busted open out of the gate! Jumbo with a vicious attack. The sleeper hold by Kerry on Jumbo looks awesome. Kerry looks like he's praying to the gods that Jumbo will pass out, and it's locked on super snug. Jumbo turns even more vicious with a beatdown after he powers out. The claw looks awesome again as KVE gets the second fall with it and refuses to let go for a bit. Third fall Kerry is the one that comes firing out. The match has a very intense feel. Jumbo starts obliterating KVE's right (claw) hand because he's had enough of Kerry using that as his go to... and knows that may be the only way he would lose. Love Kerry sells the damage to the hand when he tries to cut off Jumbo with a punch to the head. Both guys deliver in a big way here. The finish is what it is, but it doesn't take away from the match for me at all. This match is incredible, and I agree it is probably the best match of KVE's career.- 7 replies

I haven't been high at all on Harley Race during his early 80s AJPW run. Here we get him against the Nature Boy in Japan. The biggest problem I've had with him during all this is that he won't sell for anyone. He also gives a lazy vibe at times. I feel like Harley was selling a little more for Flair than others, but he's still kicking out at one and cutting Flair off a bunch. Some of the headbutts look good, but basically Flair just works his ass off to get something out of Harley here. His reward is Harley winning. This was ok.

There ya go! Ha, thanks
-
The distraction wasn't intentional. Styles just wants to kill him so much that he got distracted when he saw Ellsworth. But, didn't he wait until AJ was about to already win before he came out?
-
I really enjoyed the match, but maybe I missed something... Why did Ellsworth distract AJ from getting the title only to help him win it immediately after? Logic? Adding ... he wants to face AJ for the title ... so he distracts him from winning the title so he can help him win the title...

[1993-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl III] Chris Benoit vs 2 Cold Scorpio
JKWebb replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #420 I loved this match the first time I saw it (probably 13 years ago), and something is to be said for that. It seems like a lot of folks liked this more when they were younger, and it still holds up for the most part. I don't see it as great anymore, but I do think it is really good at around ***1/2 to ***3/4. I think a cool aspect of this match is how much fun it is to show it to a kid. I think it's a creative bout that anyone will at least enjoy.- 19 replies

http://placetobenation.com/countdown-top-500-matches-of-the-90s-450-401/2/ #421 This match was good for what it was. I thought Tenryu delivered a better selling performance of the two. The tag match highlighted prior to this looked more appealing for my preferences, but I enjoyed this fine. I don't think I'm as high on it as some, and I don't think it'd be anything I'd return to. I'm with OJ thinking a regular cage match would have suited them better, and likely would have been excellent.
