4/1 - Thoughts On The Following Matches
goodhelmet replied to Marty's topic in NMB Wrestling Archive
Hell, I don't even own SS'95. I had the ladder match put on a comp for me some time ago. And both GAB91 and KOR95 are shitty shows. -
Actually, I may have his list so I can always email you his list to see what you are interested in.
-
Ginnetty is only one of the greatest tape dealers on the net. The understanding is that if Ginnetty can't find it then it doesn't exist. His VQ and prices are also off the charts. He does not have a website but does have an email address. I'll shoot it o you when I get home and back on the net. probably sometime later on tonight.
-
Look at it this way Some Guy... -- I have the WWF tv coming from you. -- Loss is going to be sending me some old NWA and puro. -- Tim Cooke is going to be sending along some AAA and puro. -- I am in the process of looking into some bulk buys from Ginnetty. -- Plus I have about 20 DVDs from innetty that I have only touched the surface of. Ihave plenty on my wrestling platter to get my fill. I think watching WM this year would be more of a chore than entertainment. If Eddie_rey or HBK-Angle or the 6 man come through, I may rent it from Netflix when it comes out. As of now, I have no connection to WWE tv and don't fell like i will be missing out if I pass on this show.

I had no idea. Really, the show is tomorrow and Ihave zero desire to watch it. I couldn't care less.

I'm not disputing the shittiness of Summerslam 95. I am implying that WM X was not a good show. Even with Bret winning the title, look at the crap you had to endure to get there. Owen-Bret and the Ladder match are good. The rest is GAB'91 bad. -

I agree that you have to have some basic knowledge of the workings of a wrestling match, know what makes a good heel or face, etc. Not all good-great matches have a great backstory. If a wrestling fan, someone who has been exposed to large amounts of wrestling, sees a match for the first time, he should be able to pick up on the subtleties rather easily. This is absolutely necessary to enjoy a product where the announcers speak a different language since you have no idea what wuld be going on otherwise. You def. need some background in watching matches to fully understand it. On that I can agree. Sometimes. Why would I need 24 hours of tv to get to one match. I can read about the story, see a clip job and then get into the match. Take the JBL-Eddie bloodbath from Judgment Day. I didn't sit through SD! week after week so I could understand the backstory. I saw the two-minute intro package and that was all I needed. I don't think it cheapened my experience at all. I just saved myself som time byu not watching bad TV. On the flip, a great story with a bad match payoff can do the exact opposite. It can kill your enjoyment of that emotion you invested in and I don't need that. Bullshit. A good match is a good match. A botched move is a botched move. The styles may be diofferent but as I indicated in a previous thread, any match from any time can be compared to another. Come on, we talked about this and you agreed. Wait. I think it was Tim Cooke that agreed. I look forward to that post. Um... sure? So are you ssaying I should have to sit through evey tv show and interview to get the full impact of a match? I don't have that much time and typically, if a match is good enough, it will stand on its own as a good wrestling match. Take 6-5-89 for example. In that match, ther is plenty of backstory. Tenryu and Jumbo play off the previous match-ups with each other. They are former tag partners. The powerbombattempts have more meaning. THey give a nod to the Funk-Jumbo '76 match and yo uwould have to have seen it to know it. With all that said, it was still a good match when I saw it because everything in the ring made sense and was compelling and I didn't know any of that stuff the first time I saw the match. I still knew it was a good match. AFTER seeing the match, I chose to go back and see more oftheir work and to collect the previous encounters and then saw Funk-Jumbo and it only mad eme appreciate the match more. However, I needed to appreciate the match on its own before I invested the time to go back and explore all of the other nuances that make it even greater. And I am going to have to sum it up by saying if a match can't stand on its own, I have no need in investing more time to see what led the competitors to that point. That is what makes 6-3-94 so unique. It is a good match that has so much context that once you see it unfold, it becomes th best match many have ever seen. But many people who hype that match saw it cold turkey. It intrigued them enough to explore what got them to that point. If he match sucked, there would b no need to even go through the trouble of hunting down all of their previous matches except to see them stand on their own. -

Pillman vs. Badd. Two guys just thrown out there. 6-9-95 has a huge backstory. It is still one of the best matches i have ever seen... even though it was one of the first All Japan matches I had ever seen. I didn't even know who was who when I first saw it. How many great Jrs. matches have you seen without there being much of a history between the participants? You may need to know the signature moves, if a guy is a submission artist or whatever but it isn't absolutely contingent on seeing every match that came before it... esp. in America. There is no way I am going to sit through three hours of mediocre-decent tv matches to get to that one blowoff match or whatever. And to me, if a backstory is absolutely useless if the match sucks. The match must be able to stand on its own. When you go watch some Destroyer matches, because of lack of footage or whatever, there is absolutely no way you can be able to know what is going on in the backstory or whatever. You only have what you heard on the net but you'll be the first person to praise those matches. Why? Because Beyer's work is so rich that the match stands as its own entity. EDIT: Let me get to work and respond some more. We are not done I tell you!!!!! Fuck, I'm late. -
Just to defend my Christian prediction... I haven't seen RAW in a year lr so or even read most of the updates in months. I just drew a random person not named Benoit to win. I had absolutely no rhyme or reason for picking Christian. It could have been Benjamin or Kane or Edge and iwould have no defense for my pick.

No. Watch the matches. I can tell you that they were tag partners. Misawa got his big break first with a huge win over Jumbo. Kawada was the whipping post for the big guns while Misawa was the Triple Crown champ. Misawa won both the '92 and '93 matches. Kawada was destined to win the '94 match... but didn't. And that is only the surface. This ignores the countless tag matches and six-mans, the meaning of the movesets of each wrestler, the relation to Jumbo, the comparison of matches to the same opponent. go to tOA and look for jdw's letter to the Observer where he sums up the match beautifully. Tim may also be able to elaborate deeper than I could. -
Wrestlemania I - There isn't a great match on the card but i can sit through the entire thing and enjoy the hell out of it... even to this day. I think I like it because it takes me back to a place where I was ten years old, the world was a-ok and I hadn't really hit puberty yet. I'll be honest.. I get amped when I hear Eye of the Tiger play and hear the crowd go batshit for the main event. Wrestlemania 2 - It is no secret that one of my favorite Wrestlemania matches is the Bulldogs-Dream team match. I mark out for Ozzy. I marked out for the title win. I love it. This was also the first time i can ever remember trying to predict the winners of the card. I think the only match I missed was the Funks-JYD/Santana match. I thought there was no way in hell two old guys were going to beat my team. I was wrong Wrestlemania III - this card has two of my favorite Wrestlemania moments. Adonis getting his hair shaved and Steamboat becoming IC champion. I still remember not being able to sleep that night because I was so energized over this show. Wrestlemania IV - I watched this live and had no idea that Clash I was on at the same time. I picked the wrong show. I fell asleep during the middle of the show and my mom was upset. I think we paid FIFTEEN DOLLARS to watch this. I marked out for Savage winning and still remember them showing clips on the morning news the next day. I also enjoyed the battle royale. I was secretly hoping for a Bad News Brown win but the Bret Hart face turn was neat. Wrestlemania V - Savage gives Hogan his best match ever and I forget what was on the rest of the card. Seriously, I can't remember and don't care to look it up. Wrestlemania VI - I think this is another throwaway card where the main event, when seen today, is really mediocre. Wrestlemania VII - Loss loves Savage-Warrior. I don't. There isn't any other match on the card i would pay to see and the greta match isn't that great to me.

I have always been of the opinion that a match can and should stand on its own. With that said, this is the one match I think you need to know the backstory and have seen the matches leading up to it to truly appreciate how great it is. The entire match is like a history lesson of the Kawada-Misawa feud. I can watch 6-9-95 and appreciate it for what it is. I can watch Jumbo-Tenryu and love it for what it is (even though there is some great payoffs and nods to former matches). 6-3-94 is the one rare case where the history is absolutely necessary to appreciate all of its worth. I think for American matches, it is easier to catch on to the story because the commentators can lead you by the hand by virtue of the fact they speak your language. You don't have that luxury with Japanese matches but after viewing the matches leading up to this, you don't need to understand a word of Japanese to appreciate it for all of its worth. -

Bro, WM X was an absolutely dreadful show except for the opener and the ladder match. Everything else was WM9 bad. -
Ok, I looked at Meltzer's site, no dice. I'll try the other sites or the AP but I think this is a big April Fools joke.
-
yeah, you shouldn't be hesitant to go. When Shawn Michaels used to run the Texas Academy, I didn;t know any of the workers either then a few years later, Spanky and American Dragon blow-up and I remember watching those guys working their ass off... even back then.
-
I think it was actually something that other writers and bookers had also complained about... Hogan switching up the stories the day of the show. hate Nash or not, that isn't his fault.

Right. Many times the cage matches are contingent on the angles leading up to them. So, having said that I can see why you would enjoy Owen-Bret but at the same time, for such a good feud, the blowoff needed to be better. Hit me up on AIM (Smarthelmet) or pm me. I agree 100% that Foley made the feud worth watching. Unfortunately, while I still love the interviews and angles leading up to his retirement, I don't think the matches are that good. -

Agreed. The time needed to be cut down (and I don't ususally say that about matches) and the blood doesn't bother me except that this was the perfect feud for "blood". I've seen too many excellent matches to call this a ***** match also but easily one of the best junior matches on American soil. You really need to see some more cage matches. There are matches that destroy this one. Hell, several are on the bloodbath DVD and surpass this one quite easily. Watch JBL-Eddie from Judgment Day. It surpasses this match in nearly every way. -
Ok, I am surprised noone else has mentioned it when talking about the great matches from the last 5 years.

3/30 - Thoughts On The Following Matches

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho - 3/30/2003 (WrestleMania XIX): -I don't have this match on tape so I can't rewatch it. I only remember watching it live and coming out of the bar thinking it was the best match of the night. Then I saw all the love heaped on Brock-Angle and thought people were crazy. Def. need to see this one again. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart - 8/29/1994 (SummerSlam 94): - I was bored with this match the first time I saw it and remember thinking "There is no way this is a 5 star match. Maybe one of the most overrated matches I have ever seen. I think I'll watch it tonight or tomorrow and do a little wrap-up review. Rey Mysterio, Jr. vs. Eddy Guerrero - 10/26/1997 (Halloween Havoc 97)- One of the best matches of either man's career and that isn't hype either. However, I haven't seen nearly enough Eddie in Mexico so that feeling may change. The execution was as crisp as I have ever seen in any match. The feel-good moment at the end gave you hope that WCW would do the right thing some of the time. And soon you shall. If I can get to the post office after work, you may have it as soon as Friday or Saturday. The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar - 8/25/2002 (SummerSlam 2002): -I also have never seen this match in complete form. I watched some of it from a file that was going around at TSM but didn't like the way it looked on the computer. Cactus Jack vs. Triple H - 1/23/2000 (Royal Rumble 2000) - I remember being bored when it happened until the gimmicks. I thought the handcuffs were a stupid idea and the rest was just overkill. Maybe foley was so run-down that he had to rely on all the crap to get through but I was so let down by the whole thing. Alot of people praise this match but I think it is overblown. I'll have to rewatch this one also. -
This saddens me... only because I was hoping that some form of joshi would eventually rise again and produce a geat product. Damn.
-
Eddie vs. Rey- Eddie should win... unless they are going to give Rey a run at the world title Orton vs. Taker- Orton should win but more than likely Taker will take it. Money in the Bank 6-man- Benoit should win but won't. I'll go with Christian??? Fuck, I don't know. The big Show vs. Akebono- What are the rules for this match? Christy/Trish - Who gives a shit? HBK vs. Angle- I think HBK will win. Cena vs. JBL - JBL should retain so that Rey can challenge for the title HHH vs. Batista - Batista wins and loses it a month down the road.
-
You have to elaborate on this one!

The Jackhammer looked fucking cool at the time. Even more impressive when he would dangle then up there and walk around before dropping them. His spear was also the best one of the bunch.
