  1. Curt Hennig – Feud with Bockwinkel and evolution into main eventer Nick Bockwinkel – Feuds with Curt Hennig & Larry Zbyszko Stan Hansen – Strong AWA run; epic series with Carlos Colon in Puerto Rico; Feud with Jumbo & Tenryu in All Japan Jumbo Tsuruta – Tag Team of the Year contender with Tenryu; Great singles matches Genichiro Tenryu – Tag Team of the Year contender with Jumbo; Great singles matches Tatsumi Fujinami Yoshiaki Fujiwara Akira Maeda - The MVPs of the NJ vs. UWF war. Jerry Lawler – Not as strong as 1985 but epic series against Bill & Buddy with a Loser Leaves Town to boot against Dundee. Has great feud with Bam Bam and ends strong against Tommy Rich. Ted Dibiase – Solid feuds with OMG and Freebirds. Terry Gordy – Probably Gordy’s best year on TV with his run on top in the UWF. Missing footage from earlier in the year. Ric Flair – Great feud with Ricky Morton and great summer run during the Great American Bash. Too bad we don’t have the Murdoch run on tape. Ricky Morton – Feud with Flair puts him over the top. One of the peak years for the RNR. This feels incomplete but I don’t think anybody in WWF was lighting it up as a WOTY. Steamboat? Savage? Texas was on a downswing. I don't see enough singles footage to include a Buddy Rose in AWA.
  2. Sawyer feud takes Duggan to another level for sure.
  3. Duggan could easily be included but I don't think he has the second wave of stuff to put him in like the other Mid South guys do. Dibiase also has the Murdoch feud and tag stuff. Reed was taking on all challengers that year and really elevated himself as a super worker. Murdoch had the Dibiase and Reed feuds. Besides the Dibiase feud, what are Duggan's strengths that year that would put him in contention in your eyes?
  4. He has glimpses of excellence especially in the New Japan feud but his Hustle stuff is a joke (same with Tenryu).
  5. I might have to include Magnum TA. He has the Super feud with Tully (and I gave Tully props) but him and Flair had an awesome series of matches around the country and on TV. He probably wouldn't crack the Top Ten but he deserves recognition.
  6. Choshu is up there.
  7. He did. They had really good matches together. They might not be MOTYs but worthy enough to put on the list.
  8. We'll explore Tenryu and Fujinami down the road. And Wade, feel free to create any topic you want. If we need to merge or edit, we will.
  9. May be a good idea to do threads like this for other years. Working on 1986 right now.
  10. Chris Adams and Kerry Von Erich are the brightest spots in World-Class. Kevin usually holds up his end in singles and I liked him in tags. Gino I never had any use for unless it was with Chris or Tully. Kerry was also wrestling Flair in MId South and had some great matches there. Plus, I think Kerry is the only von Erich even worth considering for this list and think he was great at wrestling a wide range of wrestlers in a variety of styles. Adams absolutely belongs as he was just hitting on all cylinders in 1985. Add that he was in a Tag Team and Feud of the Year contention and he may crack my Top 5 but it would be hard. Bobby Eaton at the time was underated. They were in Texas early on in the year in a down period for the team and didn't really pick up footage wise in Crockett until 1986 whereas the RNR had the footage in Mid South and Crockett to warrant putting Ricky on the list. What did ya folks think of Fujiwara, Maeda, and Takada in 85? I haven't seen that stuff forever. The UWF vs. NJ stuff doesn't really pick up until 1986 but fuck... I forgot to look through the Other Japan stuff.
  11. Fixed. I wouldn't argue that but I was trying to be understated with the guys on the list to leave room for more inclusions.
  12. No, I just needed to separate the discussion from the AJ styles thread. I also think this is a useful tool in compiling WOTYCs in deciding rankings. IT also allows me to look at the wrestlers you proposed and see if I would put them in that mix. At first glance, Rey and Navarro feel right but I am not as high on Christian's TV run as you are especially when Regal is right there having those standout matches with him.
  13. Going from 80s matches and nominations combined with memorable feuds combined with work in different territories (by no means a prerequisite), these are guys who have a good shot for Wrestler of the Year consideration in 1985 from the 80s project. Feel free to add names. Butch Reed - Big Mid South run and matches with Flair & Murdoch and opening up the eyes that Reed was an elite wrestler Chris Adams - Super tag work with the Dynamic Duo but also producing high volumes of quality singles matches. Dick Murdoch - Big feuds and matches in mid South with Reed & Dibiase and high quality tag work in New Japan Genichiro Tenryu - Feuding with Choshu and company Jerry Lawler - Feuds with Savage, Dundee, and the Freebirds highlight another banner Lawler year including a MOTYC Jumbo Tsuruta - Feuding with Choshu and company; Series with Mart Kerry Von Erich - Feuding with the Dynamic Duo in singles and tags. Has nice run with One Man Gang. Nick Bockwinkel - Feuding with Martel + tagging with Mr. Saito Ric Flair - Working opponents all over the world including high end matches in Japan, Mid South, Texas, Crockett, AWA Rick Martel - Feuding with Bock, defending title against various challengers Ricky Morton - Excellent tag run in Mid South and Crockett with high level MOTYCs to boot Riki Choshu - Feuding with Jumbo, Tenryu & company Tatsumi Fujinami - Top worker in tags and singles for New Japan in 1985 as with most years that decade Ted Dibiase - Super Feuds of the Decade level stuff with Duggan and Murdoch. Top matches with Reed, Bob Sweetan and Jake the Snake. Tag with Doc. Tully Blanchard - Quality matches against several opponents plus super feud and MOTYC with Magnum TA
  14. Who would rank Top Ten from 2009 in a 1985 list?
  15. I have that Baby Vader match closer to 5 than 4 and consider it Vader's first true classic.
  16. Kane's 1999 sucked. If they had him work Kane to show him WWF style it might have to do with the fact that Kane is a safe worker.... like Lance Storm. All of the wrestlers love working with Kane ("It's like a night off"). It doesn't mean he is actually producing great matches in the ring or was enjoyable to watch. What I meant was that there are certain wrestlers that have been dissected and spit out enough either here or at DVDVR that we don't need to recycle the arguments and I think people formed their opinions already. Kurt Angle, HBK, Mark Henry, Chris Jericho, HHH. HBK and Kurt Angle are going to get a lot of votes on this project. I have no intention of making the Angle vs. HBK poll because it is a tired topic in my view. I thought the Jericho vs. Hardy discussion brought something new to the table so I created a Jericho topic. As far as revisiting... I have no intention on revisiting the Angle or Benoit stuff. No desire or heart to. When i revisited the Rock stuff, still loved it. When I went back and watched the Punk feud, in ring, still loved it. When I made the 1998 yearbook, still loved his cruiser run in 1998. I made notes above of stuff I want to revisit. I don't need to be labeled as a Meltzerian who only lives in the here and now. I may revisit the HBK feud but it is still pretty fresh in my mind I don't know if I need to. Same with the Legends stuff. I am going to revisit the Cena stuff (not just for Jericho's case but for Cena's as well). I think I need to go back and explore the early 2000s stuff more because my view of wrestling has changed drastically since that time. My view since 2008-2009... not so much. I have been pretty consistent on what I think is good for about the last 8 years or so and the more I rewatch matches from those time periods, or watched within that time period, I usually only reinforce what I thought in the first place. Now, pre-2006... a different story.
  17. When we put together the 1998 yearbook, I pretty much insisted that we include the entirety of the feud because it may be the only great thing Vince Russo has ever been associated with.
  18. I would add that you are criminally underrating the Murdoch series but I love that one more than most. Few people have dominated a territory the way Jumbo dominated All Japan in the 80s. Fujinami in New Japan.... Lawler in Memphis... Jumbo in All Japan. Flair carried Crockett but we haven't actually put together that list but he seems like a safe bet to be added to the above list. Dibiase was close in Mid South. Kerry was close but not quite in Texas. Nobody dominated WCW for the 90s. Bret was on his way to doing it in the WWF but falls short. Cena has been on top wrestling mega main events since 2007 but has as many duds as he does classics. I guess Bock probably dominated 70s AWA but footage and all that. Buddy Rose dominated most of Portland but not for an entire decade.
  19. I voted Dustin but this is just demonstrably not true. He has long stretches of doing nothing or being actively not very good. I mean 98-2002 is like a completely dead period. I thought Dustin had a shockingly good 1998 with the Val Venis feud that I love, love, love and the fun Vader match at Rumble. 2002 was the Goldust/Booker tag team and had some of the best tag segments in years entirely predicated on if they lost, they had to break up. Dustin milked every single nearfall and pin attempt as life or death. I can't think of anything relevant for 1999-2001. Hanging out with the Blue Meanie in 99. I don't know if he carried anyone in the dying days of WCW. Drawing a blank there.
  20. When did I say I prefer Jumbo to Tenryu?
  21. His early WWF stuff is a net positive evem.when he isn't working Bruno. His AWA run was solid with some standout performances. I loved the early WCW run with the Dangerous Alliance. Then again, that is one of my favorite eras in wrestling from any company. His Regal feud is one of the best Tv feuds of the 90s. He won't be high on the list but he will be on it for sure.
  22. Steamboat is a guy I willhave high on my list but I wwant to address the criticism of him overselling and acting melodramatic in the ring. When you watch that arena footage, or any handheld footage really, he is definitely a guy who plays to the cheap seats. It doesn't always translate well to TV matches but it absolutely works in those arena matches he was working day in and day out.
  23. I am not going to convince anyone who doesn't like Jericho to like him now but these are some time frames that impressed me during his career. 1998 WCW Cruiser run - The matches are hit or miss but for the character crowd, this is a huge feather in Jericho's cap. In 1998, he was one of the few segments I actively looked forward to. The Malenko feud was awesome to go through week to week and his TV match I attended live was the highlight on an evening of lowlights. He carries a one man feud against Goldberg and made that entertaining. 2000 WWF - He was having good/gerat matches with Angle and Benoit, none of which I plan on revisiting anytime soon. He was one of two faces (the other being the Rock) who could get entertaining segments out of Stephanie McMahon. I don't remember the X-Pac or Kane feuds and need to revisit the HH LSM match. I don't know if my hatred for HHH will allow me to rate the match fairly. 2001 WWF - I loved, loved, loved the feud with the Rock and during the Jericho project, it stood the test of time 8 years later. I haven't seen the Regal IC match in a decade so I should probably revisit the match. His tag work with Benoit was praised but I probably won't revisit that stuff. I thought he felt right at home at the top of the card during the title unification stuff and don't remember him botching any moves or embarassing himself on the big stage unlike the Rhyno botches that took place at Summerslam. 2002 - The HHH feud was dogshit but that was just as much about the booking as it was the matches. I don't remember the Flair feud. I am pretty down on Flair from this period so somebody can tell me if I should waste my time on this feud. (I honestly don't remember anything from 2003 including the Goldberg feud but people praise the Goldberg match so i should revisit it.) (Ditto 2004) 2005 - I really liked the John Cena feud. I thought Jericho did as good of a job as anyone in putting him over and making Cena feel important. His Loser Leaves Town match wasn't a classic but it was a huge memorable moment and I love Jericho going out kicking and screaming. 2008 - I know people here are divided on the HBK feud but I am on the side where I thought it was effective and well-worked. I am not going to waste time trying to convince anyone it was a great feud because this is one of those things people have already made their mind up on. I put it in the Jericho plus column. 2009 - Man, I thought Jericho vs. the Legends/Steamboat and Jericho vs. Rey were stellar feuds in and out of the ring. One of the few things I cared about in WWE that year. Again, huge feathers in Jericho's cap. I also thought he was effective teaming with Big Show and had the chance to check out 2 PPVs live with the tag team this year. 2010 - The Edge feud generated positive press and there was enough momentum for me to add the Mania match to the MOTYC project. I don't know if it holds up now but it was praised at the time and I enjoyed it. 2012 - The CM Punk Mania match stood up on revisit when we did the Mania project last year at P2B. Smart work by both guys. This was a great in ring feud hurt by a bad out of the ring feud. I understand Matt Hardy had a hot ECW run and V1 run. Cool. He also had a couple of years as a white hot tag team with his brother. Cool. Add his Omega and indy run and you have a couple of more feathers. I don't think it stands up to Jericho's cache of impressive feuds and matches over the years. However, I think Jericho is slowly reaching Angle and HBK territory where people are already predisposed to like or dislike the guy and he'll have that going against him.
  24. I thought walking Leon White through one of the greatest wrestling lessons in the history of wrestling lessons, plus the fun brawling in the AWA was more than enough to give Stan some AWA points. My biggest problem with Hansen is his reverence for Brody as his tag partner. Gobbling up other teams and spitting them out is a real black mark on his career. On the other hand, I think you have to give Terry credit for the heavy lifting he did getting the Japanese to care about lame, old, brittle Dory. In singles matches, Dory was a huge letdown in the 80s footage and to get good/great matches with that as your partner is a plus. Thumbs up for Terry. On the other hand, even though I praise Terry for reinventing himself in the 90s, the stuff is a huge hit or miss. His inconsistency in the 90s is a huge negative when comparing him against guys who were much more consistent at an older age. Neither guy will be my #1 or even Top 5 but they will rank high. I just have to decide if the Brody tag work could knock Hansen below Funk and his wacky garbage worker stuff in his old age.
  25. I picked Dustin because I think he may be one of the Top 5 tag workers of all time, but ringwise, I don't know if Austin hits Top 5 anything. His drawing power is undeniable but I am not going to make a GWE list based on drawing power or childhood memories.
