  1. So basically you are saying that it was a good thing for Styles to call matches his way as fans who had to rely on videotapes couldn't and wouldn't know about context and thus it would have diminished their pleasure of watching individual events on VHS.
  2. For me the most interesting part of the 21st century TV for the uneducated masses is that it might really get pro wrestling out of it's role as the worst conceivable thing ever. I'm used to see wrestling receiving vitriolic hate, but with the advent of Big Brother, Casting Shows and Scripted Reality I have noticed that less and less you will hear negative opinions about wrestling. As journalists can tend to have more affluent backgrounds this means that they will now see wrestling more as something -worthy than an atrocity. Of course my opinion is influenced by the specifics of the German media, i.e Big Brother lacking most tactical elements - but that format is now pretty dead anyways & we do have something popular that that was exported to other nations that is translated "Berlin Day and Night" that is basically Jersey Shore with the production values of the Blair Witch Project and rather gritty faux-documentary style, just imagine the "high quality" of such a program.
  3. I think it was the old Denen Coliseum in Tokyo, an old tennis venue, that I always liked in the Classics. Neat visual, good acustics.

  5. I was 12 and I was pissed that the match stopped, I liked my jobbers back then
  6. I wouldn't say there was an era for it. Pick a time frame where a good number of stars worked in many territories with completely different styles and you will have your answer.
  7. If you see this in the next 3-4 days you should be able to download this 1964 Austrian tv report from Vienna with a young Crusher Verdu http://apasfpd.apa.at/cms-worldwide/online...144909P_Q6A.mp4
  8. It's even better, as a kid Lasartesse (real last name is Probst) was in some part of Switzerland where he was bullied as the lone German in class, then his family moved and he was bullied as the lone French in the class. He got into wrestling in order to be able not to get beaten up anymore. What a starting point for a heel. Good to know there is a Lasartesse vs Samson match when they were still in their primes.
  9. I was mesmerized the first time I heard Dumps theme, which probably was the first Hair vs Hair Match against Chigusa. I should point out that the Italian tv intro was neat as well as it was vintage Italo Disco (there is also a version)
  10. "...8 1/2 years..." Does Warrior imply he started in January 1983? Also I DEMAND Spoony to make that letter into a promo
  11. This was probably not even in the top 100 of worst DX segments. Just think of the Spirit Squad
  12. I know it's a joke post but if the Network is a success, TV ratings fees double or triple and in her new role she can somehow clean up the reputation that wrestling has got with major corporate sponsors, she could be credited as having reinvented the business and making it much larger than anyone else could ever do. That might be actually debatable. Weeks ago one of our independent wrestlers/managers was voted into parliament for the second biggest party and while I didn't look into the matter too much I didn't see a single derogatory mention of his background in any articles (maybe Robert S. or Jetlag were "lucky" enough to see one), and quite a number of media articles were published because of his wrestling gig. And this was in Germany, the possibly most anti-pro-wrestling country ever! So I began to think about this and maybe, just maybe has reality tv given us the first generation that might not look down at pro wrestling in the way we are used to. The bar has been lowered so much (*insert South Park James Cameron joke*) that the old sentiments against pro wrestling are outdated like early 20th century anti-sport sentiments.
  13. I dislike the general thought that an opinion can be too negative or too positive. If you believe in your opinions then write them down - even if they turn out to be rubbish you still shouldn't be ashamed of them. There are a lot of different aspects that can make or break a card for each individual, so often it is likely that a certain aspect of a show just wasn't your cup of tea and doesn't mean that it was necessarily a good or bad thing.
  14. Basically if you want to know if you should question Meltzer's lucha coverage just ask if Konan is in some way involved. So is he?
  15. What do you expect with pro wrestling fans who are more likely to be fans because of mic work than mat work. Slightly OT: Remember when Bix posted something about some old time German historian called Gerhard Schäfer who was pissed at Tom Burke wrote an article about nazi gimmicks and included a midget wrestler? To explain this, midgets were Josef Mengele subjects for instance so I can see how somebody might get really pissed at something like a midget nazi gimmick. It's possible that Schäfer, born in 1921, had to deal with the euthanasia projects at some point in his youth and thus was so furious. Anyways, why do I write this? I got to see the letters that Schäfer received from Karl Gotch, and the majority of them weren't about pro wrestling but rather about amateur wrestling, Schäfer himself was an amateur official for decades. It was interesting to see them speak about amateur publications and even books, Gotch for instance almost reviewed a "new" book from the late 70s and i.e. was highly critical about the leg work and stance. Gotch wrote also about his experiences as an Olympic athlete and trainer and how he was ousted by the Belgium amateur organisation. At one point the Burke article came up and what did Gotch say about Burke? That pro wrestling magazines are a giant waste of time and that Burke was a hack or something like that, I would have to look up the exact phrase. Gotch would rather import amateur magazines from Europe than buy pro wrestling magazines from his local newsstand. No wonder IOC news isn't on the radar of the majority of pro wrestling fans if they are only slightly interested in wrestling itself.
  16. Were you by chance talking about guys from South America like Bill Martinez? His brother has the best wrestling name ever - Rudo Martinez
  17. Does Cornette know about Aileen LeBell Eaton? India had some 30-50k houses from around 1953-1955. I am not aware of any huge houses in Lebanon, do you have numbers? The old timey Euro workers tend to say that they drew ridiculous numbers, but I try not to parrot the claims untill I know that they are at least likely to have happened.
  18. But they got more merch $$$ per head than Hulk and Austin iirc . I don't think the ticket prices in Toreo would make those shows more profitable than AJW.
  19. Basically "well he got in, I saw him live and he was okay, but nothing special a all. His kid is better." Obviously not a direct quote but that was essentially the gist of it Sr. was born in 1936. One wonders how old he was when Dave saw him "live", and if it was in any setting to show whether Wagner could work or not. I can't find him on any California cards I have so maybe he just saw him in AJPW. Seems unlikely, doesn't it? Btw, I should have been clearer earlier, me wondering about Maeda and Carnera was more about their respective timeframes as superstars. Maybe at some point people will make a project to determine when which wrestler was a superstar or an ace of a promotion.

  21. Primo was still active as of 1966 in South America, so it's not like he had a short career either. My thought that started it was that the thing they had in common was that at the end of their careers their style was outdated or in other words just not effective enough anymore for stardom.

  23. Could it be a good or merely interesting idea to compare Maeda to Primo Carnera or guys with a similar short careers like, I don't know... maybe Maurice Tillet?

  25. It seems likely that I will ridicule Dave's statement for decades to come.
