Is Camp WWE comparable to Brickleberry?
-
You would have to subscribe to some service like newspapers.com In the recent months there has been quite an influx of research on the WCMB Thesz board, you can read quite some interesting articles there. It always depends how much the promotion paid the newspaper to cover them, so for Cincinnati in example you might only have a two liner with only the main event listed (Sheik era) or details for every fall (early 40s) and everything inbetween. A personal connection to the newspaper could get you very far as well. Before newspapers.com started their stupid "Publishers Extra" premium subscription I had started to do Des Moines 1939 and that was the craziest stuff I have ever read, in part due to the fact that few Pfefer shows received coverage. Since then I/we switched to Cincinnati research, but hopefully that era of Des Moines will be done in the next year.

Wrestling's radically progressive view of race and nationality
Indikator replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Pro Wrestling
That tag match claim is either completely stupid or locally isolated. Just like most wrestling claims. A comparable matchup, no mixed teams: June 8th 1939, Whitey Wahlberg & Frankie Talaber beat Jack Claybourne & Black Panther (Jim Mitchell) It's really interesting to follow the naming of old national gimmicks. You have a midget named after Haile Selassie, some greek guy who wrestled under the name of a dictator (George Kondylis) - which makes it really difficult to find any information for the wrestler as the guy was still in power . If Gutenberger wants to know about certain names, I might be able to help. Basically for "nazis" it's either the mothers maiden name (Hans Schnabel, August Von Schindler) or some politics/pop culture reference (Von Stroheims were named after a director, the Von Brauners after the rocket scientist). I am aware of blackface in Russia around 1910 where somebody had to impersonate an African. One of the bigger names was an Estonian who had the gimmick of being from Mongolia. Killer Khan btw is from Korea iirc *cough* My favorite gimmick name that I hate is Joe Stalin. Wrestled in Georgia in the early 50s. No clue who it was. But they named him Joe fucking Staling. Joe! For fucks sake, it makes Jose ==> Joe conversions seem sensible in comparison. So if you have questions if certain names have ever been used feel free to ask. There was one Adolph Hitler, his real name might have been Otto Ludwig -
I'm not aware that Vimeo (the wXw provider) is troublesome in any way, of course I can't guarantee that because of the usual language/country crap. I wouldn't expect any problems. As wXw is now pretty much a touring company it might be a good idea to categorize certain cities, show concepts and crowds as you really can't compare some East German rednecks from Limbach-Oberfrohna with the weekend tournament crowd of smarkish superfans who spend lots of money. I still haven't seen shows from half of the cities, but I've been to pretty much all environments already, even had the experience of 100 solemn locals in Bitburg.

The scheduling stuff is too much apples and oranges for me. You never know how many media appointments and appearances outside of the wrestling arena people have nowadays. And it's really stupid to say that it was in any conceivable way ("more respectable" etc) better to have been constantly under the influence of something to adapt to a ridiculous schedule and drop dead at 45 as it has happened way too often. I read about most World Champions growing tired of their schedule, and once you hear such stories about Joe Stecher you just have to wonder how ingenius the Europeans were back then with their troupe tournaments in the same damn spot for 2-10 weeks.

I wonder if Blassie had the Jim Londos Tijuana Bible. The things you can find through a "wrestling" p2p search (dc++ in this instance) -
Wrestling's most shameless, most glorious exaggerations
Indikator replied to MoS's topic in Pro Wrestling
I should add that I didn't want to bitch about you in particular. It's just often enough frustrating to see people just bitch and make assumptions without doing shit themselves. I would love to have access to all Tennessee Mountain Wrestling shows for instance, but I won't expect that too happen. In a similar manner, Eddie Mansfield has not once but twice contacted us with the mindblowing revelation that we are not having all his matches he did for Eddie Graham. So I did ask him if he could provide us anything for his own IWF promotion, as there is pretty much nothing IWF related to be found anywhere. But no dice. So Eddie Mansfield will at some point contact us for a third time reminding us that we do not have every single CWF show and there still won't be any IWF related information to be found. -

Well I'm doing the same stuff on WD so I am looking into these things. In regards to 90s lucha I can see the possibility that AAA and CMLL sold matches (1-2 per show) to local promoters, with that you can easily get 5-10 shows around the horn with your talent, but that wouldn't mean that everybody in the roster will do +5 shows a day. It's even possible that somebody like Sandor Szabo will end up with the most matches of any wrestler in a single year as he did an iron man gimmick at some time in the 50s where he wrestled 3 opponents a show. Too bad they only had seemingly one show a day in California back then per roster. So if I wonder who might end up with the highest number of matches in one year and and that's what I end up with, that should be saying something. Slightly OT: As you can see we prefer to back up claims with numbers. As we're researching Cincinnati at the moment (until it died a painful death in 1979) we'll come closer to the question who had more matches against each other - The Sheik vs Bobo Brazil or Dominic DeNucci vs Baron Mikel Scicluna. Researching something is better than talking out of one's ass -

I'm actually thinking more and more that it is overblown. I just would like to see one example from Mexico. The Jason Campbell newsletter uploads have fleshed out the NYC/NJ/CT roster from around 78-83 in an amazing way, so it now a bit easier to see their erratic schedule in the smallest towns with high school imaginable. -
You might want to talk about Doink & midgets vs Lawler & midgets just for fun

6:05 Superpodcast Episode #19 - Her Name Was Jack Daniel's
Indikator replied to Bix's topic in Publications and Podcasts
AFAIK there were two Demolition Blast's, Carmine Azzato being the other one. But I'm not too sure of either Charland's and Azzato's exploits in the wrestling business. By the way - how far does your NYC/NJ knowledge go back? It seems likely that three days before the Brody murder a potential DeNucci trainee and WWF Jobber called Ray Miller died in a New Jersey ring (or at the hospital). He was also one of those 1986'ish Libyan gimmick wrestlers, so he might have been the Memphis Abdul Gaddafi. Anyways, I'd like to know if you know anyone who would even be aware of him. -

http://wrestlingdata.com/index.php?befehl=shows&show=168611 I got this show from the old "The History Of Wrestling" sheet, it used "San Quentin Prison" so I guess it's legit With internal tools I can search for match titles and venues, I believe I unsuccessfully searched for "naked" matches a couple of episodes ago when you talked about the "buck naked" XPW match I couldn't find any venue with "mental", but maybe this was what it seems to be http://wrestlingdata.com/index.php?befehl=shows&show=174326 -
You might wanna stick with "Micha" Nador instead of using an Alpra spelling. IIRC Nador was like his colleague "Horts Hauffman" a former amateur and both at this point had less than 5 years of experience in the pro ranks. Matches like these showcase what an ideal European business would have looked like. To bad the actual credo was pretty much the "No Future" one of the 1970s punks so screw youth development.

You might want to drop me a line when it comes to questions if WD is missing stuff (better do it at S&W). Matt Farmer is also pretty good to fill in the blanks Also, showapuroresu.com could be very helpful for pre-1989 Japan claims, in this case google for "gagne site:showapuroresu.com" ==> 48 9(国) 57 5(全) 59 3(全) It's year, month, promotion. As it's Showa era just add 25 to every year. Thus it will be 1973 September IWE 1982 May AJPW 1984 March AJPW and the matches in question are Giant Baba and Dory Funk Jr. beat Jim Brunzell and Greg Gagne Sanjo April 21, 1984 Jim Brunzell and Greg Gagne beat Giant Baba and Dory Funk Jr. via cor Yamagata April 17, 1984 I forgot that there even was a PWF World Tag Team League

Tanahashi v Okada, how many singles matches?
Indikator replied to BigBadMick's topic in Pro Wrestling
This shameless plug from my site should have a better solution. Don't forget that you can limit it to 1 on 1 matches as you can see in the link -
I'm not the biggest fan of the book. A book about Charley Fox ( http://www.thewrestlingcop.com/ ) was pretty much everything I hoped the Burke book to be. I'm still trying to figure out the circuits Mildred worked, her career record (done by Vance Nevada and that Jeff Leen) will hopefully help us. It's not easy to locate booking offices based on results often enough.

Capitol Revolution is NYC-centric, so the crossover isn't too strong and it might even help you to put things into perspective. With wrestling history you have to piece together a shitload of things, don't expect a narrative to fulfill all your needs in that regard. You will learn enough just going through the Ohio archive at prowrestlinghistory.com for instance

Dave's criticism of Memphis is likely influenced by the old pre-Observer newsletters. I believe it was in a Matmania issue where I assume Burt Ray wondered how those crappy Tennessee wrestlers could have such huge houses.
-
Yes I am one of them. You guys can always send me PMs with questions and corrections (or mails, once the mail server is back up). There needs to be a WAR handheld so I can find out if this Shinobu fellow worked there as well. Of course right now I can't find my Lynch list nor my 1999 mook. At least I recently scanned some old German newsletter so I have all early Picksi stuff from Mid-98 onwards.
-
Thanks. I'm starting to think that this guy might have been a WAR undercarder in 1995
-
Can someone please look if there is something on tape? Not that I can't see how such a mistake might have happened, but especially Kenichi Yamamoto vs Tamura on 96/08/25 is intriguing.
-
It goes further back actually, I've read a couple of times that in the 20s/30s good boxers (some from Europe) barely made anything in NYC when they could have made way more money elsewhere. They all wanted to make it big though. The weekly wrestling cards in NYC and basically most smaller East Coast towns were probably just as bad pay wise

Pre-Karadagian is basically the Zbyszko-era. I'm not sure if Karadagian was in Argentina prior to his 1949 US run. Wolf debuted in Mexico in 1945. So there is only a slim chance that it wouldn't have been Karadagian-era. Though I do wonder when and how the transition to Pfeferesque and maybe even worse gimmicks came to be.

People who post Grizzly in this context plain annoy me. Either you are way too lazy or too shallow for your own good. Might as well base your opinion on Mark Henry solely based on his 1996 matches. There is no reason for me to take such people seriously anymore
