  1. That leaves Portland and Toronto open for Dylan and Dkookypunk43 tentatively
  2. I like this. Notes on things not finalized: I am in the camp of wrestlers retiring, injures, and deaths be the same as they actually happened. Sometime before the draft, I'd like a list posted of every piece of talent draftable (and not draftable i.e. freelancers, etc.) separated by role (Wrestler, Manager) so that pre-draft I can make my picks on paper and just cross off those that get picked before my turn in the rotation. Also since we are likely to finalize promotions by this weekend, is the draft possible for this weekend? That would give 3 weeks for bookers to work out their format, frequency of shows, etc.
  3. If we are going by order of signup, barring Dylan's picks, there is only one conflict (JVK, Jesse Ewiak, and Beast all got the promotions Dkookypunk43 chose). The rest comes out as: Grimmas - Montreal Kris Zellner - GCW Beast - JCP Cross Face Chicken Wing - AWA JerryvonKramer - WWF Jesse Ewiak - WCCW DylanWaco - ? goc - Southwest El Boricua - WWC dedhemingway - Central States Boon - Southeastern dkookypunk43 - ? dawho5 - Mid South TravJ1979 - Memphis (CWA) Flyin Brian - ICW Peachchaos - Stampede RockinCrypt - Portland With Toronto and Florida being the two offices left, plus AJPW, NJPW and Freelancers of that comes to pass.
  4. In regards to draft coordination, I like the idea that once the order is determined just put a clock (12 hours?) on the pick and if no pick is made within the allotted time, it is made for you via random draw of remaining wrestlers. Before draft I would also like a complete list of available talent. Doesn't necessarily have to be broken up by promotion since that won't matter once the draft gets going. Looking at the earlier list, why is Terry Funk in retired if we are starting July 1? Wasn't his first in late August?
  5. Sometime before the talent draft, I'd like to see a definitive set of rules, especially regarding start date, dates on champion/independent contractors, etc. All of these things will have an influence on my draft choices.
  6. The only gripe I have with the preferences determined/pick in order of signup is that I found this late or else I would have signed up much earlier.
  7. 1. CWA (Memphis) 2. Georgia 3. WWF
  8. Great. Any date finalized for promotion draft?
  9. If it is still open, I'm in.
  10. Anybody listen to this? I'm half way through and he's hilarious.
  11. I nominate LuFisto. Match reviews coming ...
  12. I actually spent over two years watching every PPV from ECW, WCW, WWE, and TNA (even the 110 weeklies), every Raw and Smackdown, iMPACT!, Nitro, Thunder, and most of the ECW TV and handheld's I could. Also every ROH show through the end of 2007 (at which point I was completely burned out). After that I had narrowed the list to around 20 per year/per company and then re-watched those to create my final lists. This wasn't off other's opinions - just my obsessive desire to watch and rank.
  13. Due to the GWE project, I thought I'd pull this over from another part of the board. This is mainly to help the guys not wanting to delve too deeply into the 2000's as kind of a guide as to what to cherry pick and maybe you can go down the YouTube suggestion rabbit hole to find other stuff you may enjoy. NOTE: Matches for each company are in CHRONOLOGICAL order. ECW and WCW have 2000 and 2001 combined due to them going out of business. ROH has a Top 10 covering 2002-2003 due to lack of quality matches. NWA-TNA has seven matches for 2002 due to lack of quality matches. Most lists I found easy to narrow to 10 while others were pretty difficult. Some lists have a handful of matches that I had a hard time leaving off, but in the end I'm satisfied. I may revisit this in a year or so to actually make Top 25 lists or order them other than chronologically. =========================================================================== Here is a list of the Top 15 of most matches selected. 1. Kurt Angle - 39 2. AJ Styles - 32 3. Samoa Joe - 31 4. Christopher Daniels - 28 5. Bryan Danielson - 26 6. Chris Benoit - 23 7. Chris Jericho - 21 8. Rey Mysterio - 19 9. Shawn Michaels - 18 10. Triple H - 17 11. Low-Ki - 16 12. Chris Harris - 15 13. Chris Sabin - 12 13. James Storm - 12 15. Nigel McGuiness - 11 15. Steve Austin - 11 15. Undertaker - 11 NOTE This is without ROH (2008/2009), Indies, Japan, etc. I expect a few names to drop off, some different names added, and for Danielson to move up a few spots. I am quite surprised that Angle has that many and I can only credit it to TNA being so lousy without his, Joe and AJ's matches. Chris Harris is probably the biggest WTF on the list and his number is high due to AMW in the early days of TNA and his 2004 singles push which got him a few good matches. Also interesting to me is Steve Austin making this list as 9 out of his 11 were from 2001 alone. He's sure to fall off when everything gets finalized. =========================================================================== ECW Top 10 (1/1/2000 - 1/13/2001) 1. Yoshihiro Tajiri v. 14. I remember reading the WON around late '99 early '00 when Bryan first started out and Dave mentioned something like this, but labeled it as 'bragging' and 'stupid'
  15. 11.25.94 - RWTL - Not televised as far as I know.
  16. Tommy Dreamer New Jack Bubba Ray Dudley
  17. I have no problem posting my Top 100 when the time comes. Maybe we can devote a thread to individual lists and Parv can PDF to his heart's desire
  18. In the final results, is everyone who garnered a vote going to be listed as in the 440-some odd wrestlers in the smarks poll or are we just publishing the Top 100?
  19. I just watched a Murdoch v. Humongous in Mid South that was supposedly the latter's debut. So simple, but Murdoch takes this stiff and makes him look like a million bucks due to his masterful selling and decision to bleed everywhere in a rather short match. A feather in the cap of Murdoch supporters.
  20. For my list at least, I want to make sure I stay true to the essence of this poll. Greatest Wrestler Ever is the objective here, "Ever" being the operative term. Obviously, "Ever" doesn't really mean "Ever", but we should get as close to it as possible. We use "Ever" because it sounds better than, "Greatest Wrestler Ever (who's career spanned anywhere between late 1940's to present that we have enough footage of and can verify based on observation rather than legendary stories)" Naysayers will criticize because Gotch, Jenkins, Burns, etc don't show up on the list. That is fine. They may very well deserve to be on this list, but I'm not going to assume it just because Lou Thesz or some other "authority" said so. I also need to make a very conscious effort to stay true to the scope. I see a lot of wrestlers getting nominated that have no business being nominated. If a career started in 2005, they are going to have a very hard hill to climb in order to be added to a list limited to 100 of all-time. I'm not saying they aren't good wrestlers or wrestlers deserving to be on a Top 100 or even Top 10 wrestlers of the 21 Century Poll or Top # wrestlers of the [enter promotion], but the scope of roughly six decades of available footage I believe is more than enough to provide 100 greats throughout a career vs. a subset of a good run a wrestler may have had. I mean, if a guy had a really good three year run in only one promotion and was unable to get over in any other environment, I'd have to disqualify from him being anywhere near a 100 of all-time list.
  21. I don't hold it against FLIK for voting Hayabusa #1, but it was clearly a vote based on favorite wrestler/influential wrestler merit instead of an objective look at his career. That is the point I'm making on this. I mistakenly lumped the clear strategic vote of the Taylor/Rogers match with this note about FLIK. For that, I apologize. This kind of references another aspect of voting on lists like this. The "fringe/contrarian" voter who will put an obscure wrestler on his list just for the sake of being different. Kind of like a "look who I know about and look how high I ranked him/her" attitude. Now, I believe anybody should be able to put any wrestler in any slot they want. I just want that person to have a well researched, thought out reasoning behind it instead of doing it to bring attention to a wrestler who would otherwise not get it. That is what the nomination threads are for ... To support your nomination with a bunch of supporting material.
  22. As soon as this list is finalized and published, it will be met with criticism - both deserved and otherwise. However, if everyone vows to create their list based on a set of criteria they have set for themselves and stick to their picks based on that, research, and the time they've put into it, I feel it will be respected and much easier to defend. This topic came to me after thinking about some of the DVDVR 80's sets and various SmarksChoice polls and how they were sometimes plagued with, what I call, strategic voting. For instance, I seem to remember a Terry Taylor v. Rip Rogers TV match from 1990 that someone voted #1 in the Best of WCW poll. I highly doubt this person thought this was the best match in the promotions history, but voted it number one so he could guarantee it would show up. Or in the 2006 poll, when Hayabusa was given a number one vote. I realize that a lot of times, favorite wrestler = great wrestler, but there is no logical argument that could be made that Hayabusa is the greatest wrestler to ever lace them up. So really, this is a plea for everyone to take this as seriously as something like this can be taken and to refrain from strategic voting. For as much time as all of us will be putting into this list, it should be easy for any of us to defend all of our inclusions and placements to any critique or question that comes up. A lot of the criticism will come from The WrestlingClassics.com or Meltzerites while reading over the list with comments like, "Bunch of smarks didn't even include *WRESTLER A", or "WRESTLER B" are you serious! My point is, this will be dismissed by people who've spent five minutes scanning names on a list versus the VOTERS who've spent one and a half years actually watching matches and putting in research and not voting on existing or prejudicial, pre-existing opinions. I want the final product to reflect all of our effort and be able to systematically break down any of those jabs from self-proclaimed elitists and group-think critics.

    CM Punk

I'm a big fan of CM Punk. I like just about everything he has ever done professionally, and I even think Phil Brooks would be awesome to hang out with, but again, the scope of this project is just too large. I think in the 2006 poll someone suggested that Punk himself would say he doesn't belong on such a list. Even though his resume has grown tremendously since, I would have to agree with that. It is difficult to eliminate personal opinion/favoritism in something like this, but I'm trying.
  24. I have nothing against Mikey. He was able to make the best out of a Paul Heyman underdog gimmick and gain acceptance with the fans. However, he has no shot at my top 100. He has nothing notable outside of ECW as his brief WCW run was a flop and his sporadic appearances for ROH and other indies left something to be desired. Eventually, he became overweight and seemed to stop caring. He fits in somewhere, but the scope of this project is way too broad for it to be on a list like this. If the parameters were like Best of ECW or Best of a certain year, then yeah.

    Yokozuna

How much of Yoko is available prior to his WWE run. I'm sure there are Great Kokina matches from Japan and possibly AWA. Do those hold up? As it stands, I would not vote for him, but that's not to say I dislike his work. He worked smart during his run on top, but then he gained too much weight and it was over from there. A solid two years isn't enough for GOAT.
