  1. In a lot of ways, the 1996 set begins with this. Powerful debut with everything done correctly and it feels weird to hear Tony on commentary as I think all of the Nitro clips we have gotten so far have had Bischoff.
  2. Match clips did look good which surprised me and Vader looks like a monster here. The Goldust stuff is odd. Vince loses his shit over the mouth to mouth portion and Ahmed still dazed walking around destroying shit was interesting to watch. I have to commend WWF for trying different stuff here even though the tactfulness is still not all together.
  3. Sunny is doing her switcheroo here as she makes out with Billy and is smitten. WE get some highlights of the power outage and I can only imagine how Vince was this day. He announces the repeat for the next night and DIbiase adds to the stakes saying he would leave the WWF if Austin loses vs. Savio.
  4. I will give this a pass all things considered but man was it boring and mundane for most of the match. Maybe they didn't know they were on PPV but they were really mailing it in for the first portion of this and doing the bare minimum requirement. I have pretty much thought all Shawn PPV matches from 96 up this point have been great so it was unfortunate to see bad Shawn rear his head here first with the lackadaisical performance and secondly with the shit fit he throws later on. I hope the King of the Ring match is better as I always remembered digging this feud and the matches around it but this was a disappointment. **1/2
  5. Armstrong winning by DQ was something to see as it was so odd. The highlight to me was Flair running out Wild Cat Willy from the Pro studio. This was good on the set to have a courtesy look at Flair in this small environment but the dominant run of him in the beginning of the year is now a thing firmly in the past. **
  6. Again this was fine but not really representative from the RINGS we have seen from 1997-1999 so it is kind of odd to go back to these more primitive times. Yammamoto looks good here and is someone that really advanced over the years in my eyes. **1/2
  7. Riot was interesting to see but Han pretty much dominated this all around and it was really short. *1/2
  8. Very good match but not an all time classic. This does have a great finish with the Nodowa finishing off Misawa to give Taue his Triple Crown in kind of stunning fashion. I Think they maybe should have pulled the trigger on this in September of 95. IN contrast to Kawada vs. Kobashi, these two had some real highlights in the 1990's but also some matches that fall into the very good realm instead of the great one. Kind of weird so far in All Japan that no one feels like they are firmly established as now even ace Misawa has a big loss to show for himself. ***1/2
  9. This really feels like Kawada being pissed at what happened the night before and taking it out on Kobashi. These guys are really starting to craft their feud for the 1990's as their 1998 match is a ***** classic, 97 had the Carnival match, we have this and the hour draw in 96, the hour draw in 95, and their match in October 93. This feels like an unheralded gem stuck in the middle of that series but it is a welcome addition and a great match overall. Kobashi feels well enough established at this point that he can survive that onslaught from Kawada and return the favor which leads to a nice stunning conclusion where Kawada looks to have the match won but he let the tag match slip between his fingers and it is always possible that could happen again. ****
  10. This was a more of a straight crazy ass brawl than the match before to me which was great. Tenryu and company fit in and him interacting ONita is still aces every time out. I enjoyed seeing a young Okumura here compared to what we see of him now. Just 15 minutes of a violent spectacle match that crammed a lot of stuff but still meant something to the overall feud. ***3/4
  11. I kind of had a different take as the opening sequence looked great with Yamakawa coming out looking like Japanese John Wayne. The thing I appreciated in this match was the lack of tonal shifts overall in the match. Each person was on offense for a while in the middle portion and even the final sequence had few times where someone would perform one move and the other person would perform another one. I thought the brawling and teases in the early portion showed some good restraint that paid off in the brutal climax at the end. The brawling in the crowd is nice and violent and intense and sure Honma dives off the balcony but the weapons are organically used and not obtuse. Then the final sequence is almost like two warriors stumbling into a death arena where they can fulfill their most violent desires. I really really thought this was great and one of the better death matches of the 1990's. ****1/4
  12. I liked the young guys being in there a good bit and actually thought this was some of the better Ishikawa vs. Ikeda sequences we have gotten this year so far. Hidaka seemed to hang better than Yone to me because he could mix in his more junior flying aspects that created a nice contrast. Again like the MPro tag a few matches before this, this wasn't high end but shows how great Battlarts was overall in 1999 when this can be viewed in some ways as a disappointment. ***1/2
  13. The Dudley's do seem to be getting the upper hand too much in this feud so far with the flaming tables and the sneak attacks. I hope that changes quickly as I like what they have done so far but the Dudleys need to get theres soon.
  14. This was something else. Some straight racist lines fired back at each other between these two. Just another day of Kick Ass Wrestling.
  15. This match was fine but between the bar aesthetics and Cruz seemingly out of his comfort zone, it wasn't much more than a decent look at an actual match in this ridiculous feud. **
  16. Wolfie throws his name into this angle and it is still indeed great. We get some more great promos and this again is handled in such a great way that makes it feel organic and not overwrought with the whole worked/shoot aspect.
  17. I thought at SVDM he had Lawler for Mayor stickers. Anyway, it seems like the campaign is kicking into gear here.
  18. Agree that I liked seeing this on the set because while it wasn't great, it still was a lot of fun and really good which shows kind of the baseline around this time. Taka looked refreshed and ready to prove something and him being a dick to the young ins' always entertains me. It may have been the lack of SUWA that made this dip a bit in quality but it was fun seeing someone else get mixed into the fray with TARU. The Japanese indies are all bringing something different but entertaining to the table right now. ***1/2
  19. This is a great brawl. Spike is able to bump well against the Dudleys and him and Balls make a cool team together based on contrast. The fire stuff still is engaging to me because it should be building up to a great payback spot. ECW so far has still had a good bit of entertaining in ring highlights from the year and it feels like this feud still has a lot of legs to it. ***3/4
  20. FMW has had highlights so far but this feels like to me where they really started to build the momentum that will propel them through the second half of the year as one of the best companies worldwide. Hido gave a great performance here taking a beating and this had an eclectic mixture of everything you would want from this type of multi man match. I remember seeing the dog food stip and shaking my head at the ridiculous of it but they even make that bit work. Great stuff overall. ****

  22. Serious ups to Word Hoard, great image. Im an hour into this show and it is jam packed with great knowledge about the politics of the territory. My favorite tidbit so far is Ross role as the syndication guy and how that would come back to haunt him later in his career.
  23. In the past few weeks, I have taken notice of BigBadMick, BenjaminKicks saying they are going through the 1990's in All Japan. Parv has his Excite Series run through with Steven who himself hasn't seen these matches in many years. Dawho5 did a great thread last year chronicling his journey through the 1990's but now he is going back with more focus. I say all of this to claim that now is a great time to have a definitive guide of All Japan in the 1990's. I think All Japan for most was a "promised land" when first getting into tape trading and I know I dug in with as much fever as I could in 2001 chronicling the 1990's. In recent years, I have just watched select matches as I have went through the years of each worldwide promotions. I am hoping this thread can provide some neat insight where we can get recommendations on ALL the stuff from the 1990's that we need to see from All Japan as well as discussion on the workers, booking and overall landscape. There was a time when 1990's All Japan seemed like a really boring topic with no new ground to break but I think now with the mix of first time viewers, revisionists, and historians, this could be some great discussion. So from 1990, what needs seeked out in addition to the following stuff listed below: Toshiaki Kawada & Ricky Fuyuki vs. Fantastics (AJPW 1/3/90) Jumbo Tsuruta & Tiger Mask vs. Genichiro Tenryu & Ricky Fuyuki (AJPW 1/14/90) Genichiro Tenryu & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Isao Takagi (AJPW 1/20/90) Jumbo Tsuruta, Kabuki & Mighty Inoue vs. Genichiro Tenryu, Toshiaki Kawada & Ricky Fuyuki (AJPW 1/25/90) Jumbo Tsuruta & Yoshiaki Yatsu vs. Kengo Kimura & Osamu Kido (NJPW/AJPW 2/10/90) Genichiro Tenryu & Tiger Mask vs. Riki Choshu & George Takano (NJPW/AJPW 2/10/90) Vader vs. Stan Hansen (NJPW/AJPW 2/10/90) Stan Hansen vs. Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 2/21/90) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Yoshiaki Yatsu (AJPW 3/2/90) Tiger Mask vs. Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 3/6/90) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy vs. Genichiro Tenryu & Stan Hansen (AJPW 3/6/90) Steve Williams vs Yoshiaki Yatsu (AJPW 3/24/90) Bret Hart vs. Tiger Mask (WWF/AJPW 4/13/90) Randy Savage vs. Genichiro Tenryu (WWF/AJPW 4/13/90) Hulk Hogan vs. Stan Hansen (WWF/AJPW 4/13/90) Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Genichiro Tenryu (AJPW 4/19/90) Tiger Mask & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Yoshiaki Yatsu & Ricky Fuyuki (AJPW 5/14/90) Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi & Akira Taue vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, Great Kabuki & Masa Fuchi (AJPW 5/26/90) Stan Hansen vs. Steve Williams (AJPW 6/5/90) Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Terry Gordy (AJPW 6/5/90) Stan Hansen vs. Terry Gordy (AJPW 6/8/90) Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (AJPW 6/8/90) Toshiaki Kawada vs. Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 6/30/90) Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Yoshiaki Yatsu (AJPW 7/7/90) Masa Fuchi vs. Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (AJPW 7/12/90) Steve Williams & Terry Gordy vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Kabuki (AJPW 7/19/90) Stan Hansen vs. Mitsuharu Misawa (AJPW 7/28/90) Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi (AJPW 8/18/90) Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Kenta Kobashi (AJPW 8/31/90) Fantastics vs. Joe Malenko & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi (AJPW 9/1/90) Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Jumbo Tsuruta (AJPW 9/1/90) The Fantastics vs. Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace (AJPW 9/7/90) Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace (AJPW 9/29/90) Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs. Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue (AJPW 9/30/90) Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue vs. Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace (AJPW 10/7/90) Mitsuharu Misawa, Toshiaki Kawada & Kenta Kobashi vs. Jumbo Tsuruta, Akira Taue & Masa Fuchi (AJPW 10/19/90) Stan Hansen & Dan Spivey vs. Dory & Terry Funk (AJPW 11/15/90) Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada & Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue (AJPW 12/7/90) Stan Hansen & Dan Spivey vs. Steve Williams & Terry Gordy (AJPW 12/7/90)
  24. I had Badd playing the defacto face but I liked that in regards to the tv title match at times, you had less face/heel stuff and guys just going out to win a belt. Also, those were the only two guys I for sure wanted on the show that I wanted a spot. I agree Arn in the tag is a little iffy but him stooging and freaking out at Scorps aerial moves would be amusing and I wanted to keep everything logical to where they actually went at Beach Blast 93.
  25. Mainly just for optimum marquee value. You could probably have Sting or someone there but I think the match loses a lot of its luster. My master plan is Cena going complete heel, refusing to retire afterwards, and re-imagining his character when he is allowed to due to other stars being built up throughout the rest of the card.
