Of any team in 2000 that I didn’t have a formulated opinion on going into the year, York & Matthews have fallen the most. I had sort of assumed they were a Hardy level tag team at this point that just didn’t have as many opportunities and was in ECW purgatory. Instead, they are just pretty sloppy together and don’t have chemistry with each other or a connection overall with the crowd. The opponents here don’t help matters as Earl the Pearl can go away as quick as possible but still we have seen a nice chunk of MCW matches now and they never reach Backseat Boys vs Bad Crew levels IMO which is a shock to me. The FIP sequence was decent and the hot tag and double team moves were decent as well but there just seems to be something hollow and unnatural with the execution. Finish have the heels winning with a side Russian leg sweep/Blockbuster combo which looked pretty cool. **1/4

[2000-11-18-JAPW-3rd Anniversary Show] Sabu vs Axl Rotten
soup23 replied to Edwin's topic in November 2000
Only other singles match between these two was in Big Japan in 1996 which is shocking to me. I also looked at Axl’s cagematch and was surprised to see he only had around 100 matches from 2000 through his death. Sabu in this match was a pretty meh version of himself where he botches a few things and doesn’t have much balance. Axl tries to work heel at first but that gets abandoned quickly. The match doesn’t have much heat and ends when Sabu hits a nice legdrop through the table. Ian Rotten rushes down to ringside and smashes a chair on Sabu so Bad Breed is back together. The camera angle was so bad I couldn’t even make out who made the save for Sabu. Ian promo ends this which doesn’t lead to anything as best as I can tell. Rough outing for JAPW as they have showcased some good young talent this year but dismissed that for a vanity type show featuring old ECW talent and hardcore castaways. *3/4- 3 replies

I assume it was Fat Frank’s dream to run the ECW arena but the sparse crowd looks pretty bad here. Lover is pretty generic and him as a 1st round KOTDM competitor is pretty spot on. Homicide took some nasty bumps throughout this match flying from the Crow’s Nest and crashing through a table on the tope con hilo. He also delivers a brutal Cop Killah to win the JAPW title. I didn’t think Homicide was bad here but you can only do so much with Lover as an opponent. **1/2

I made the executive decision two minutes in to just turn this on mute and listen to a podcast instead as the work here looked good and easily the best Dinsmore has looked this good and at 10:00 PM, the last thing I need is Cornette yelling at me for 15 minutes. Damaja hits a good top rope clothesline and gets the pin but Dinsmore is able to get his foot on the rope. Both guys are out and selling the damage and we are one clean finish away from having a very good match on our hands. Right as I type that, McCollugh comes out and powerbombs both men. You can’t have nice things being an OVW fan in 2000. We get some clips from the week before of McCollough facing fresh as a daisy Randy Orton. Interview after those clips and Cornette emasculates McCollough and he grabs Corny telling him not to ever interrupt him. They are building him up as a monster but it doesn’t feel like its going to work. Shame as the match we got was good before the nonsense. *** (6)

[2000-11-18-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler & Spellbinder vs Steve Bradley & Slash
soup23 replied to GSR's topic in November 2000
Pretty lame King promo in the aftermath of the Baxter stuff last year. King mentions Bradley winning the MCW championship on their show and issues him and Slash a challenge. Spellbinder stumbles through some words and here comes Bill Dundee sporting a swank Tennessee Titans jacket. Dundee claims that Bradley’s title is on the line here and Dave says he doesn’t care what Foley says. Not a very strong match as Lawler was FIP but probably the best of the four here. Spellbinder continues to be completely awkward. We hear about MPPW having a show at the car dealership this afternoon. Baxter runs in for the DQ and has a blow torch which is pretty far fetched as well with no heat from the crowd. * -
Bobcat is out and man what an awful promo and not in the grating way she is aspiring for. She moves to commentary for the match and sucks there with Dave trying his damndest to keep things on topic. This is why Dave Brown is still one of the best announcers in the world in 2000. Match itself is really fun with both guys going all out and showing their athleticism with the highspots. Finish had some good nearfalls and Spanky hitting Sliced Bread #2 followed by a frog splash to pick up the clean pin. Bobcat says she wasn’t even paying attention to who won. Fuck off. Spanky and Derrick King have a good show of sportsmanship where he hands the title but then King comes back in with a chair and attacks getting the Power Pro crowd going wild. **

This is presented as Bradley’s return to the area. K-Krush is back for probably his last appearance in Memphis now that he has debuted with WWF proper. Bradley really dominates the match and we get some good input from Kevin Kelly about how working in Puerto Rico really toughens you up. Of course we follow that up hearing K-Krush may be off his game from late night recording with Road Dogg. Bradley misses a moonsault and now Krush can mount some offense. Finish sees Bradley using a trash can lid to smash a diving K-Krush and then he gets the pin becoming the new champion. Ok match. *1/2

[2000-11-18-MCW-TV] American Dragon & Spanky vs Rodney & Pete Gas
soup23 replied to Edwin's topic in November 2000
Quick promo from MSP saying they are going to beat the ass of the young boys. Spanky and Dragon rush the ring and the match is on. Dragon and Spanky show some good tandem moves with each other until the FIP sequence happens on Dragon. Gas hits a really smooth powerslam on Dragon that gets two. Heat is good from the crowd encouraging Dragon to make the tag to Spanky. Spanky is given the hot tag and he hits some good dropkicks when he enters in. MSP shows some resiliency in coming back and regaining the advantage with a double backbreaker. Rodney goes to the top but gives the blockbuster to Gas and Dragon dropkicks him out of the way allowing Spanky to pick up the win. Good match. *** (5.9) -
Another heated chapter in this feud. The Tanaka/Kanemoto duo in particular beat the shit out of Romeo until he could tag out and bring in grumpy Liger to give them a taste of their own medicine. Romeo looked good here and hit some nice flourishing high spots in the waning moments of the match. The NJPW juniors of 2000 haven’t always reached the high points of previous years and had some weird booking, but the Liger vs Kanemoto/Otani matches have been consistently very good and this was no exceptions. ***3/4 (7.3)

[2000-11-17-JAPW-Battle in Bayonne] Low Ki vs Xavier
soup23 replied to Edwin's topic in November 2000
Watching this, I would have bet the farm Low Ki would have been the best worker of the decade. His athleticism jumps off the page with his splits and transitions off of the arm work, but beyond that he has a stiffness and sound psychology that makes any match engaging. I thought Xavier hung with him well here and was just athletic enough to keep things moving along. The story really revolved around Ki trying to lock in the choke and it took Xavier getting cocky in order for Ki to accomplish this feat. I thought this was a great match overall for the 10 minutes it was allotted. ***1/2 (7.2) -
This match was pretty much a love letter to you Brennan.

Great match but yeah if this is getting all time proclamations that seems more short sighted than the Omega vs Okada stuff.

Thanks for the thoughts. I think the influx of Eddie, Dean and eventually Rey will help Nitro be at s baseline decent just because it will feature one enjoyable match. -
[1993-12-18-WCW-Saturday Night] Music Video: Ric Flair
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1993
I liked this video. It is possible that some were unaware of the lineage of Flair. The only thing that was odd is that they couldn't decide at points whether this was Flair's last grasp of glory or if he was in the prime of his career. The name drop of WWF was interesting. Charles gave some good words of encouragement along with the czar.- 6 replies

Done with these but the third guy looked like the love child of Marty Janetty and Mike Awesome. This probably wasn't as cringe as most of these are.

[1993-12-18-SMW-TV] Bruise Brothers and The Moondogs
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1993
I didn't have an issue with Cornette here as the powder is underhanded and he was throwing weapon shots with assistance from the Moondogs. I don't think he was going toe to toe duking it out with the Bruise Brothers. The beatdown itself is fine but Bruise Brothers aren't the most sympathetic babyfaces so it falters there.- 8 replies

Good old school Bullet promo running down Cornette and threatening that he is going to go bald. Murdoch looks right at home with the animal skin behind him and the Coors in his hand. He gives a good promo and they are hyping this match well between two old timers without it feeling like a nostalgia match. Heat on Corny was great. s

Awesome promo of Vince catching up with Bret after a workout. Bret explains his side of the story and what all is going on and it is all very believable. I firmly believe that the Owen vs Bret feud was tremendous in the early going of late 93 thru WrestleMania and then petered out from there when more individuals got involved.

Agree with much of the comments here that this was decidedly good but not much more than that. Some of the strike exchanges were good and Hamada did some great dives but overall this was just a well done lucha match performed in front of a foreign crowd that was receptive. *** (6.2)

[2000-11-17-JAPW-Battle in Bayonne] Da Hit Squad vs Homicide & Don Montoya
soup23 replied to Edwin's topic in November 2000
I think I liked this a little better than Edwin but still preferred the first tag match between these two. This felt more disjointed and odd with Homicide and Montoya dominating. Also, whether the fakeout finish was supposed to happen or it was a goof, it grinded the match to a halt. Whenever these four wrestle, it seemingly is like they can't decide whether to work the match straight or as a hate filled brawl. The last match between these four was unique enough that I was able to go along with that contrast bu this one felt like a wrestling training session where you went on to the next section of the curriculum progressively. **1/4- 2 replies

Im still looking for that magical unicorn which is a good Pondo match but this may be as close as I get. A perfectly unoffensive garbage brawl with some intensity mixed in and hard shots passed around. They did a good job using the space of the gym and the brawling felt more natural than usual with Pondo involved. I was surprised to see Page pick up the win. I don’t know who promoted this show but it certainly felt IWA-MS in look and card structure. **1/2
