[1998-04-20-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Kevin Nash & Randy Savage
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Well here is the official split. I still think Savage is feeling pretty downplayed throughout this whole thing and second banana. Liz is selling the Stinger Splash. Nash is called the leader of the NWO by Savage and he comes out track suit and all and draws the line in the sand. Savage challenges Hogan tonight and we have our main event.- 4 replies

Weird main event but it plays up the PPV as the bell rings mimicking MOntreal and Vince is appalled on commentary at Blackman attacking the referee. Austin comes down and attacks Dude quickly before setting his sights on McMahon. He throws Vince and starts to pounce on him before Dude comes back. This is a good closing sequence with Vince wanting to fight and then seeing Patterson and Brisco get stunned and turning it around. Dude is interspersed throughout this to keep heat on the title match coming up. A pretty by the numbers go home Raw but still an effective one.

Jarrett will finally sing at Unforgiven with Sawyer Brown. Sawyer Brown has the Hootie and the Blowfish trope where I thought the lead singer was Sawyer Brown but apparently that is not the case.

Foley gave one of his best promos every two weeks earlier but something felt off about this. I don't know if it was the taped atmosphere of the live crowd or what but the tone wasn't as extreme as Foley promos are which leads me to believe it may be just the character. Dude says it will be water under the bridge if Austin is willing to apologize. Good luck with that Dude.

This was sort of a mess and probably the last time Sting was ever presented as the main guy in a promotion. Hogan and Nash seem to have the spotlight and the two guys in the match are there by happenstance. I do get the desperate vibe of this show with multiple title changes and stuff being rebooted heading into the next nights Nitro.

I wasn't too big a fan of this as it felt like DDP being overly stupid for one of the few times in a couple of years in going up against the Flock without any backup. He also looks worse with what happens the next night on Nitro. Horace debuts with his stop sign and the Flock is really played out with no names now.

I think the biggest distractions in this match are the fact that the rules of the match are so unclear and Hogan vs. Piper at this point is so fucking played out. Giant throwing a dropkick looked more smooth than all of Saturn's highspots in the Goldberg match. Finish I did like a decent amount although I didn't really get the whole two bats situation. it at least sets up Hogan straight up attacking Nash with a bat making it known that a split is coming with the NWO.

[1998-04-19-WCW-Spring Stampede] Goldberg vs Perry Saturn
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I appreciated the attempt with this match and Saturn tries and has good ideas but everything he does look so sloppy and rough that I couldn't get past it. He is able to work more on offense here against Goldberg and utilizes some strategy to make Goldberg look vulunerable but still strong. Finish run was effective and crowd is now molten for Goldberg. Shoot style tag matches arent always my cup of tea but this was a really good match even if it felt like a showcase of things to come instead of a heated stand alone encounter. I liken it to the tag matches taken place before a big Budokan show. Greco was so slick at doing some great mat stuff to Alex. Ishikawa and Ikeda of course dont like each other one bit and this ended right at the correct time to not feel overly long. This set up a lot of interesting matchups for the future of Battlarts. Match only goes about 6 minutes but was a ton of fun featuring some great punches and telling a good story of how both men are treating the same match so differently. When I first saw/heard Idol I rolled my eyes at them bringing back everyone from the 80's in 1998 but he won me over with this sleazy character reviving the glory days like they are the present. He ends up costing Dundee the match by hitting him with a chair. (**1/2)

[1998-04-18-MPPW-TV] Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee / Rock & Roll Express promo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
A birthday cake in wrestling surprisingly isn't used. Dundee is peeved at Lawler for being jolly and no taking his match later seriously. The RNR send in a taped promo sending their well wishes. -
I was expecting another PSA from Corny but it is just him congratulating Hales on starting Power Pro and saying that he could show up at any time.
-
Randy is out to introduce everyone to Power Pro Wrestling and thank Dave and Cory for their support. This seems like a grasping at straws attempt to revive some of the Memphis glory days but damn if the enthusiastic crowd was infectious as they seem so damn happy to be in the studio.

[1998-04-18-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I am really perplexed as why this wasn't Kawada vs. Akiyama as a final helping Kawada gain some momentum heading into the Dome match. As for this match, I thought it was great and commendable of how different this was compared to the September and January matches. The matches between these two keep getting better and better and this one felt right on the brink of being a classic. Misawa had a very different strategy and wasn't going to wait around for Akiyama to take the fight to him. Akiyama still found an opening with the leg and worked it well. Misawa is able to sell damage without being overly expressive betraying his character archtype better than anyone I can remember. The finish was sublime with Misawa throwing out the arsenal and clinching the victory with the vicious elbow strike. Splendid stuff. (****1/4)- 10 replies

[1998-04-17-ARSION-Starlet] Candy Okutsu vs Mikiko Futagami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I thought parts of this were really cool but there were too many spots blown through and instead of the spotfest matwork motif, I just saw it as a sprint structure wise as they went through a ton of suplexes and other moves but also mixed in the armbars and submission attempts to keep everything together. I liked the one stiff strike kick being the finish. This was a little uneven for me but didn't sour me at all with looking forward to more Arsion. -
Eddy and Chavo continue their developments with each other. Great bit when Chavo is going to reach the ropes in the Lion Tamer which has been a very protected finisher in 1998 but Eddy pushed him away and then puts on the towel over his head in shame. This is the bigger development than the obvious one month feud between Iaukea and Jericho.

Nasty bump through the table at ringside by Kronus. Chetti is cousins with Taz we learn. That doesn't stop Taz from attacking him when he steps up to Taz. Also, DOuglas gets too big for his britches and Taz snaps his arm. Again, this was fine but not really conducive of selling WrestlePalooza in two weeks.
-
The 3D given to Sandman was nasty looking. A concerned Lori looks on as the wheel Sandman out on an ambulance. I didn't really get this whether it was legit or not and ECW seems to be in a ton of disarray this close to a PPV.

[1998-04-15-ECW-TV] The Sandman & Tommy Dreamer vs Bushwhackers
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
I kind of didn't understand whether the Bushwhackers where paid off by the Dudley's or just dumb. It was a cute little gag, but didn't make a ton of sense. Anyway, it is all a vehicle for the Dudleys to come out and attack Dreamer and especially Sandman. -
I fully admit I do have a scorned woman vibe with Mick. I remember being thirteen when Have a Nice Day came out. I read many aspects of that book and saw how they reflected my own life. One year of wrestling in high school, check. Overweight guy that relies of self- deprecating jokes to win people over, check. I saw myself as being a Mick Foley type guy with potential. Then, WM 16 happened and it was like finding out that Santa Claus wasn't real. I felt really betrayed and have taken most of Foley's comments and actions with a grain of salt since.

Sometimes watershed moments can seem ironic or pure happenstance and unjustifiable of the benefits they caused. In other areas, the stars align and something artistically magically happens. This was artistically brilliant and brought a dose of Memphis wrestling into the mainstream culture. Gimmicks like Patterson and Brisco warming Vince up and the one arm tied behind his back stip are good bait and switch. Hell, the whole match is a huge bait and switch but there is such a dynamic between Austin and McMahon and the development of Dude Love is so interesting based on last weeks promo, that you don't care. Amazing compared to the distress and disorganized feeling occurring on Nitro that same night. Austin vs. McMahon was the feud to allow WWF to not look back.

Constantly saying that he wouldn't return if he retired. Being overly eager to do anything for a buck. Also, being pretty shameless in his self promoting and having really thin skin at any criticisms tossed his way.
