[1998-03-13-FMW-Winning Road] Hayabusa vs Masato Tanaka
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Really hyped to watch this based on the FMW I have watched before and after this. Match starts off hot with a flurry ending in Tanaka clotheslining Busa on the outside. The template for this match is really set as both guys willing to take chances. Tanaka gets thrown to the outside and Haybusa follows up with a beautiful moonsault. Just as a type that, the match slows down with some mat work that is well done. Busa's leg hets targeted and it will be interesting to see if that hinders his flying. Busa targets Tanaka's arm so they are both going after each other's biggest weapons. I really love the work Busa does to the arm including a springboard dropkick. Another run through, and this time we get a springboard forearm targeting that arm. Tanaka sees his opening and goes after the leg again. Great moment as Tanaka goes for the surfboard and cant extend his injured arm so he gives it up. Really nice figure four spot that shows a lot of struggle. Turnbuckle tornado ddt looks absolutely vicious. Tanaka does go back to the elbow but I give them the benefit of the doubt in this regard because Hayabusa essentially no sells it and gets back on the attack. Busa runs through his finishing sequence throwing all sorts of stuff at Tanaka with him barely hanging on. I do like how Hayabusa adds a few seconds of selling behind each move to put over the match. Tanaka is able to catch him coming off the top rope with an elbow and both men are down. I was beginning to wonder if a rope a dope strategy was implemented as now Tanaka looks fresher. Just as a type that, we get a fluke hurricanarana from Busa but it is stunted with a lariat by Tanaka. Frog splash is just narrowly escaped by Busa. Powerbomb is another close call and this one should be over soon. The big elbow is blocked by Busa and he hits a release tiger suplex. This is followed by a dragon suplex that Tanaka escapes from. 450 splash.... 1..... 2...... NO. Busa has a look of defeat on his face and body even though he has firm control of the match. Tanaka catches him up top and gives a unique powerbomb. One running DVD and powerbomb give an extremely close nearfall. Reversals and elbow smash get a nearfall. Tanaka hits a running DVD again for a 2.999 count. Ok, time to go home guys. Another sequence ending in a Tanaka elbow gets another close count. I have been fooled about 7 times now. Release german suplex is hit but Tanaka gets an elbow smash to even things up. Both men stand up at a 9 count and slug it out. Busa puts him away with a falcon arrow. This match had a lot going for it but more than Kobashi vs. Misawa from October, I have a bad feeling that this was the true origin of the head dropping, big move finishing stretch that would plaque the next decade of so. They went for an epic feeling match and I did like a lot of parts of it especially on first watch but going back and looking at the little things within the match, it felt bloated. (***) -
Here's Lee Marshall. Savage is still coming out with the NWO music. Savage attacks Sting before the bell. I kind of don't understand why these two hate each other so much based on what we have seen on the yearbooks. Sting makes his comeback in his trenchcoat and this is the epitome of a punch/kick match. Sting locks on the Scorpion and here comes Hogan and Hall. Now, Sting and Savage team up to clean house and the NWO circles the ring. Sting and Macho unite to fend of the NWO and again the crowd heat is telling as this gets a moderate pop at best. Sting hooks himself and Macho on a harness and they escape in a terribly contrived exit as Hogan acts like he can't believe whats happening. (DUD)

[1998-03-12-WCW-Thunder] 'Chris Jericho' vs Dean Malenko
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Malenko gets attacked by Malenko on his way to the ring. Jericho is wearing the Juvy match throughout the match and he pounds down on Dean. Jericho gets a suplex and pins him yelling come on baby. Malenko makes his comeback and a leg lariat gets a nearfall. I guess Lee Marshall was replaced on this Thunder? Malenko locks on the cloverleaf and we have a new champion as the crowd pops big. Malenko keeps pounding on Jericho after the match and takes off his mask to reveal Lenny Lane. Jericho comes out and beats up Malenko and Lane and locks on the lion tamer. Is any promotion in history better at the mask gimmick surprise as WCW? Fun stuff. (*) -
Jericho is one of the most heated heels right now. They seem to have dropped the Malenko/Benoit tag team for a while. Jericho challenges Malenko to a shot at the belt tonight. Jericho drops that he is the man of 1004 holds and also a collector of trophies. He has Juvy's mask, the title, and now he wants the cloverleaf. If Jericho wins, he has to change the name to the Canadian Jericholeaf. This guy is great.

Finally Bam Bam cuts a promo saying that you have to get through him to get the belt. Fonzie goes on and on about Sabu while RVD looks on disappointed in the background continuing to set the seeds for that tone. New Jack gives one of his most lucid promos saying he is an original gangster. Douglas and Francine have an interspersing promo talking about the WrestlePalooza title match vs. Snow. Pretty uneventful edition of Pulp Fiction.

This civil union didn't seem to last too long. They lock up and out comes Austin. Brisco gets stunned. Referee gets stunned. Michaels is here! He SCM Austin again and DX lays a beatdown on him including a chair threatening as we get the copyright.

We get all the clips of Tyson in the WWF up to the present. This is meticulously edited. JR has a sit down interview with Tyson. Tyson says he was disrespected by Steve Austin and he cant wait to get his hands on him. Tyson says he doesn't believe in fairness when it comes to his involvement at Mania.
-
Stone Cold University shirt has made its debut. Austin is pissed that Vince called Tyson unquestionably the baddest man on the planet. We are starting to get serious teases and what is to come after Mania. Austin is going to sit in the ring for the entirety of the show unless Vince comes out there and they settle their differences. Ross pleads with Austin and Austin has some words for him. Instead of vince, we get Brisco and Lanza. Slaughter tries his hand and gets berated. Brisco tells Vince backstage that the show wont proceed unless he comes out there. Patterson receives the same fate as the others. Vince in his snaggy jacket emerges and says that baddest man on the planet is just a figure of speech. Austin flicks him off and says that is a figure of speech too. Vince basically admits that he doesnt want Stone Cold to be the WWF Champion. Austin tries to goad Vince into hitting him. Austin counts down from ten and VInce leaves the ring. Austin has some threats for Michaels. Electric segment setting the table for so much of the future.

HHH has a few words for Owen. HHH tells us that Shawn couldn't be with us tonight. I want his schedule during the busy season at my work. Shawn is at a restaurant it looks back. Shawn reviews last weeks events of Tyson becoming a member of DX. I have again liked Michaels build to this match as he has been focused on setting the table and projecting how DX thinks Mania will go.

The Giant is in street clothes and a neck braces. Really good to see the NWO original trio together as it is shocking how few matches they have. The Giant tags in and lifts Hogan/Hall up but gets from behind by nash. NWO starts targeting the neck of Giant which I understand he is injured but it still is a little perplexing FIP segment. Shockingly, Bobby brings up how dangerous neck injuries are speaking from personal experience so he adds some good context. The neckbrace comes off and they are still hammering away on him. Giant shrugs off all three members and gets the hot tag to Savage. Giant chases Nash back to the locker room. Sting gives hall a Stinger splash and they fight to the outside. Bsichoff gets decked and The Disciple attacks Savage and Hogan gets the win. They still act like they don't know this is Brutus which is so dumb. Once again the heat of the NWO has lessened tremendously as even Bischoff getting knocked off didn't get much of a reaction and neither did the big Hogan/Savage showdown. Match was good enough. (**)

Hogan has debuted the swank skull/angel wings shirt. We are already a week away from Uncensored? Damn, that was quick. Bischoff is shooting saying that Savage and a lot of his family owe everything to Hogan. Hogan cuts a good promo hyping up the cage match at Uncensored. He says he is the real Macho Man. I still can't decide whether this program feels old hat or still had enough legs on it. Stuff has been pretty heated and the promos have been good and felt fresh but it doesn't feel like WCW has a ton of confidence in it as they throwed it out with three weeks of build for a PPV.

[1998-03-07-ECW-Revere, MA] 2 Cold Scorpio vs Shane Douglas
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
These two guys always have really good chemistry together and they produced another good match here. Scorpio has a good ability and feeding into Douglas' strengths and allowing him to look vulnerable but strong. Douglas is a guy that idolizes Flair and his matches vs. Scorpio are the most Flair type matches he seems to have. Scorpio working on offense was the best part of this match. When Douglas does take over he relies on chinlocks that they do work a decent amount but still felt uninspiring from the rest of the match. Scorpio mounts a comeback and hits a nice moonsault. Francine trips him up and Douglas takes a wild dive to the floor that nearly takes out Francine. They battle on the top and Douglas is able to hit a top rope belly to belly to win the match. LIttle long in the tooth but a good characterization of what Douglas could do as a strength at times. (***1/4) -
[1998-01-06-FMW-New Year Generation] Masato Tanaka vs Mr Gannosuke
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1998
I watched this a second time after my man Brad enjoyed it and think I underrated it slightly on the first viewing. This really is a great match that is now (****) in my book and a great teaser of the Gannosuke and Tanaka performances coming up in the next couple of years.- 18 replies

Candido and Storm are playing up their differences. Candido comes back and does a separate entrance to Back in Black. I have heard Dylan talk up the FBI run in ECW and the snippets I have seen were fun. This match was fabulous however and especially Smothers gave a great performance and utilizing his schtick to make the match memorable. Storm is a guy I don't exactly like but he hit everything cleanly here and played his role well. Candido and Storm essentially play the arguing partners that tolerate each other for the betterment of the tag titles. This was an all action match for 14 minutes and one of the better traditional tags I can remember happening in ECW. (****)

Interesting looking venue for this one. Ishikawa takes over in the early going dismantling Usuda's leg. Every attack he does have Usuda lounging for the ropes trying to escape. Usuda is able to return the favor and he goes to work on the right leg of Ishikawa. The work advances to the arm and everything looks like it is cranked and painful. We got to a standing base where Ishikawa hits three back suplexes and then locks in the arm hold to end it. 14 minutes of super mat work, 1 minute of big bombs leading right to the finish. I can dig. This was a good way to have a non-match as DDP comes out and says this match is going to be consisted under Jersey rules. Him and Raven have a pretty good brawl to the back where Benoit comes out and gets mixed in the fray. Really good buildup for the triple threat at Uncensored.

PTB SummerSlam Rewind Series - SummerSlam 2005
soup23 replied to Bigelow34's topic in Publications and Podcasts
Brett: We are doing 5 of these (1989, 1992, 1997, 2005, 2010). Each show will have a three man panel of different guys so you will have 15 total contributors. -
Jericho in a black and white video vignette spewing his nonsense. Tony classifies it as gaga appropriately. Jericho was so hateable right now and clamoring for someone to take him down a peg. Amazing transformation in two months.
-
Tenay brings out Raven and conducts the interview in the corner of the ring. Raven talks about his storrid past with DDP and how he helped him when no one else would. Raven coins the barbed wire city name. Raven says if he wins the US Title, he will not put it up for grabs at Uncensored.
-
The Triple Threat has an apology. Douglas now believes the TV title does mean as much as the world belt now that Bigelow has possession of it. Douglas talks about how hot Francine is. He is talking about HEAD..... Al Snow. He challenge Snow and says he has to know he is the better man. Once again, both Candido and especially Bigelow look like cronies behind Douglas.

We get a transcript of the interview with Heyman about the World Tag Team Champions. There was a nice potshot at WCW and how the board of directors determined the Sting/Hogan nonsense. Don't really understand why you would call the hotline since Heyman gives you the scoop here.

Pretty big time main event for this edition of Raw. DX is out on the ramp at Austin's entrance and Michaels hits the SCM that looks deadly. We come back from break and the match looks to be off. Bearer tells Kane to get the bell. Kane berates the time keeper and he is in the ring. Bearer wants the bell rung ten times in memory of The Undertaker. After the 10 bell, Kane chokeslams and Tombstones the poor guy. JR pleads that he has a family at home. Paul says he has 1 tombstone left. GONG. Paul tries to reassure Kane but their is an aura around teh arena and the purple light shone on the ring. The music starts in earnest and lightning strikes revealing a coffee. Taker sits up on top of the coffin with smoke pouring out. WELCOME TO HELL AND THE DEMON THAT WILL LEAD YOU TO ETERNAL DAMNATION. Taker talks about the promise he had to make to his parents to do the one thing he promised not to do. Kane sends fire down on Taker but he states he will walk through the gates of hell to face Kane. This was a great promo even with the superficial stuff even bait and switching the big main event.
