Not the best promo and stuff from the feud but still not terrible. Chris Von Erich makes me smile everytime I see him with how enthusiastic he looks but then immediately it makes me sad because I know how his life turns out.

[1990-08-18-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Chris & Toni Adams
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
They really reached through all the grab bag of gimmick matches for this feud but somehow it kind of fits and doesn't feel too overblown. Adams does a good promo. Toni explaining that she wanted in the penalty box with Jeannie was a nice touch and I am honestly glad that toni and Chris are back together.- 9 replies

Yeah I expected Lawlers good stock promo but he amped it up a bit here going into detail on how he was going to thwart Akbar. Real good stuff.- 6 replies

Not a bad match per say but probably the worst MX we have seen on the yearbook. The story of the match kind of meanders around too much and only Eaton seemed to be extremely motivated with doing his thing even with Pillman having an off night. The finish was also stupid as shit and got Sid face heat going against their top face.

Checked the Original Midnights vs. Midnights feud that someone uploaded on youtube in five parts and I really liked this feud. The attack on Cornette was very well done using all sorts of powder and weapons and Condrey especially throwing haymakers with Paul E directing traffic.

Yeah thats what I was implying. Certainly there were guys after them that you might be watching and kind of an eureka moment and be like oh yeah I remember that guy but Lawler and KVE were on a different level.

I would say Kiern is another good example. I mainly just meant someone who was a recognizable star of another promotion and then got a shot at the big 2. Lawler and KVE were huge draws and the face of their respective promotions for numerous years and known to non-wrestling fans in big metropolitan cities. Kiern was a big draw as the Fabs. The other contingent like Pritchard, Tony Anthony, Nord, etc. were recognizable names if you were a big fan of the promotion when they had a run but I dont think they had the clout and reputation of Lawler and Kerry in casual fan's eyes.

[1990-08-18-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Wrestling Wrap Up commercial

Quick glimspe into probably the 3rd or 4th most important tag feud going on the Freebirds are wearing the shiny paint trunks. Garvin delivers a nice ddt though. -
[1990-08-18-NAWA-TV] Interview: Robert Fuller & Stud Stable
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Fuller singing some more? Sign me up. The racial connotations with Luther were almost too much for me to handle but a lot gets redeemed by watching Knobbs and Sags rock out to Fuller's song. -
KVE must have had a crash course on how to cut a WWF promo because this was so jarring and different from his delivery just a month before. This feels like this feud kind of popped out of nowhere but I can see why they did it and in many ways, I guess Kerry is the last person to come from the territory system to get a run in the big 2 besides Lawler in 1993.

[1990-08-18-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Earthquake, Jimmy Hart & Dino Bravo
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
Glad you mentioned Jimmy because when he came running out it really struck me that this may be his highest profile managing job since he left Memphis. He doesn't get a chance to do a lot here and actually Bravo is spotlighted more. I thought Quake did a good promo going into the final sell for Summerslam. -
God what a great match. I don't know where to start on the standout performers but Kikuchi rode the momentum from the Fuchi match and exemplified it here taking a man sized ass whooping but not staying down to the delight of the crowd. Some of the lariats and overall strikes in this match were vicious as this felt like a generational blood feud. Taue showed more agression than what we have seen so far also and I was kind of surprised at how well he looked in this match. Misawa vs. Jumbo again brought pure hate with each other and I loved their interactions. Pretty telling in a match when Fuchi and Kawada are my least favorites and they were damn good to. I will still contend that Jumbo vs. Misawa from 6/8/90 is one of the best matches so far this year but this is my #2 All Japan match so far and a great new discovery for me.

Austin was pretty rough beating on Von Erich considering how brittle he was. I give this a pretty big pass because I thought it was pretty obvious to how excited you could tell Chris was to be out there and Percy tried to lead him along as much as his physical limitations would allow. Certainly not the best this feud has to offer but a worthy addition and a change of pace from the stuff with the ladies.

I was pessimistic about Percy being inserted but they have made a real believer out of me with his worth to this overall feud.

Its my pledge to watch it probably after I finish the 1990 yearbook. Will, do you have a modern day comparison for Alzado? Really looking at his stats I really think he resonates more based on his playing style and the teams he played for more than looking at his stat sheet. For instance, I threw out John Abraham on the podcast on a whim and was shocked to see how close their stats align and I wouldn't expect even pretty big football fans to remember Abraham 30 years after he retired.

AWA may be an age thing to but I don't know why I can't get into it. I have watched the first 3-4 matches on disc 1 probably 5 times but after Gagne/Bock from Comiskey I start to fade. Having yearbooks to watch doesn't help matters either.
-
Will, I don't think you will like some opinions on Luger if you make it that far. Lyle Alzado is clearly an age thing. I think NFL history and legacies does a poor job of exemplifying anyone besides skill positions on offense, and of what I have learned about Alzado's steroid situation, I can understand how they might want to turn a blind eye to him. Still though, LT is a cocaine addict and I certainly know who he is without wrestling connections and Lyle Alzado is someone I have never heard off or taken notice to until a few weeks ago and I watch probably 4-5 hours of football a Sunday on average.

My ranking of the matches we saw in 1988 would be: 1. Arn/Tully vs. Windham/Luger 2. Fantastics vs. Midnights Clash 3. Flair vs. Luger Starrcade 4. Fantastics vs. Midnights Bash 5. Flair/Windham vs. Midnights Clash 4 6. Sting vs. Flair Clash 1 7. Gilbert/Simmons vs. Fantastics Clash 4 8. Flair vs. Luger Bash 9. Nikita/Sting vs. Arn/Tully Bash 10. Sting vs. Windham Clash 3 Show Rankings are: 1. Clash 1 2. Clash 4 3. Starrcade 4. Bash 5. Clash 2 6. Crockett Cup 7. Bunkhouse Stampede 8. Clash 3 Top 4 shows are really good with one of my favorite shows in Clash 1. Last 4 shows are pretty putrid or clipped to hell like Crockett Cup.

We go really long on Flair vs. Luger in the second part. It may honestly be the most we have talked about a match so far. I state that going in I was unsure whether I liked the Wrestlewar or Starrcade match the best. After watching the show, it was clear to me that Wrestlewar is the best match they have had. I still assert that but damn, the Starrcade match really lingers with me where I still am thinking about it days later. I think it is a really interesting match in that the beginning of the match we see a Flair that I have never seen before in how he acts and in the end we see viciousness from him that is fairly rare. I also think that there is an argument that Luger should have won here but they did all they could in the match to make Luger look strong in losing. In fact, Luger looks so strong that detracts from the overall match for me because he is just kicking Flair's ass and walking through what Flair throws at him for 85-90% of the match. Also Scott in the analysis is lower on Luger than both Parv and myself but I can't help but agree with a lot of what he says about Luger not being polished still in this match. I don't think he was all the way there as a performer in this match although he was good in this match with his persona and role. I do think he made a steady improvement over the Bash match and that along with Flair being better in the Starrcade match make it better overall. I hope this momentum will continue in 1989 for him. I would rate Luger's performances in the Flair matches as: Bash- solid Starrcade - good Wrestlewar - great Capital Combat - very good/gutsy

I was lower on it than on previous watches, Loss. The middle really dragged for me this time as while the moment for Steiner was good, I didn't really care for the match at all and I was disappointed in Windham/Bam Bam.
