  1. I was the highest on Shawn/Razor of all the comments so I did think this was an inferior match. I also think this is my least favorite Smothers performance so far as he was more loose and sloppy here. Candido bumped magnificently and the slugfest at the end was great with the ladder breaking adding drama. I wish Smothers would have done something to Candido before he just climbed again. Very good match despite the problems I had with it.
  2. Really great use of setting the table up for bigger things to come. They gave away enough here for the crowd in attendance to be satisfied but left you wanting more. Kawada's facials were fantastic throughout. Doc made every move he did look strong and powerful and really conveyed vulnerability well in the ending stretch.
  3. I think really great matches are able to tell the meat of the story in one match. Knowing the context of all the workers is icing on the cake. I am a huge joshi novice but I have seen Dreamslam so I knew Kandori/Hokuto were enemies. I also knew Bull/Aja didn't exactly have the most rosy past. I thought this match was really tremendous and seem to side with Loss and Exposer more than the naysayers. There was not a prolonged working the body part segment or heat segment in this match but the story crafted was so well done. Kandori doing her first normal tag in at 30 minutes was incredible. Hokuto deciding to be a little less stubborn was moving and them working together to fend off the monster team of Bull/Aja was perfect. Bull and Aja were no slouches in this either as they had to dish out the punishment and remain menacing for this to be effective. The strikes they used looked great and I thought the submissions were tight also. A true classic match that I was glad to watch for the first time.
  4. This had a go go go pace but I thought the roles were constructed well and I enjoyed bully Toyota pulling Plum’s hair and being vicious since that is a role I am not used to her being in. I also thought this didn’t have an inordinate amount of kickouts or repeatedly big moves like some joshi matches can have.
  5. This is a perfect match for a yearbook setting. I don’t think anyone would say that it is great but it serves a two fold purpose. One, Kawada handling a lesser opponent. Kawada will more than likely be one of the top 3-5 wrestlers of the year on some lists just based off his Carnival final, 5/21/94 tag match, and 6/3/94 performances. This match helps add some depth to his case in my opinion because of the way he controlled the match, gave Ace a good bit of offense and created hope spots for him, and how effectively he worked in one of his lesser known finishers in the stretch plum. The second purpose is to show Ace rising through the ranks and how he became one of the main gaijin mainstays from 1994-1998 in the promotion. Ace looked good here overall, he took a nice bump on the DDT on the floor. He executed his second rope Ace crusher well. They are a few awkward moments which can be expected from ACE in every match, but overall this was a solid performance from both guys that really helped add some context to the 1994 AJPW year.
  6. I am real annoyed at the buildup to this match. Spring Stampede was one of my most rented VHS tapes as a kid and the event is presented so well that I assumed the build up was also. So far this has been horrible and they really are treating Hogan as bigger than the company to the detriment of everyone else.
  7. Pretty good promo but the worst one by Van Horne so far and he didn’t get off a memorable line like tongue down your sister’s throat or fairytells you hear on Sunday in this one. It does feel like they have dragged it out enough and it is time for Kharis to debut.
  8. Great segment that provided the final hype for Bluegrass Brawl. Seeing Vince on SMW TV was absolutely surreal. Cornette did another great fired up promo and the Bodies didn’t detract this time with goofy bits. Morton reading the letter and getting choked up was awesome and heartfelt. Wonderful Segment.
  9. Real different Lawler promo from the ones I am used to. He really praised the town in Mississippi and the nod at his WWF color work was funny. Lawler didn't have as good rhythm here as he normally does in promos but they may have been the genuine approach he was wanting to take.
  10. My dad used to love these segments when I was a kid. I can't begin to tell you how dumb I felt when I figured out the irony of his initials being IRS.
  11. The least of the 4 corners match ups but always a good match nonetheless. I liked the buildup in this match and Taue worked a great varied attack to get it interesting. Kobashi really played the emotional heart strings well here too with timed comebacks and his facial expressions. I thought the match sort of faltered after the Kobashi moonsault and I was not crazy about Kobashi kicking out of three nodawas. Taue's clotheslines had a certain crispness to them that seemed different also.
  12. Good promo by Bret showing some venom at Owen for the first time.
  13. Post match celebration is one of my favorites moments in wrestling and really cemented Hart as my favorite wrestler as a kid. The ending of the actual match pisses me off more every time I see it and makes Yoko looks stupid more than Hart look good or resourceful. They could have had him slip and then Hart do a Hart attack clothesline or something, just the way he rolls him up with Yoko's shoulders not necessiarly on the mat always looked so poor and would be a big grip I think if the celebration was not so rewarding.
  14. This match on rewatch blew me away. I was expecting a subpar spot fest that had been done better so many times. What I got was an excellent paced match with great selling of the ladder shots and awesome bumping by Shawn. His bumps off of Razor's punches are tremendous. I know the Bret/Owen thread got derailed into a Shawn offense discussion but in this match it is at his strongest with him finding so many ways to use the ladder as a weapon. Even though he is only about a foot above the top rope, the splash he does off the ladder still looks great and impactful. I also loved the finish with him being so close to knock the ladder over. I will have to go back and watch the TLC matches at some point but while I am sure they had more stunt spots, I think there go go go attitude will hold those matches back. This match told a wonderful story and happened to involve a ladder in a logical manner. Great selling overall and Razor took some punishment in this match. This match is my #2 MOTY and was a wonderful revisit.
  15. On his grandest stage, Cornette delivers a splendid promo and catapults himself into the best promo of 1994 list with Flair's recent subpar promos. All his jokes and references seemed to fit here and he was also showing his worth as a manager by mentioning the knee. Great performance.
  16. I thought the finish was bad but not horrible and I always loved the way Perfect says "thats my story and I am stiiiiicking to it" in the promo backstage. It would have been interesting if they had went with a Luger/Bret match last with Luger targeting the knee setting up a heel turn.
  17. One of my favorite matches ever and holds up every time. Everything I think is just so perfect from the work to the setting to the announcing. Lawler was at his heel commentating best adn Vince was great in given Owen credit when it was deserved. An overall awesome match and my MOTY for the time being.
  18. Steamboat showed good fire here. I like the build up between those two and wish Hogan would have been placed on the back burner until after the WCWSN match in May.
  19. Good promo by Flair and I love the way he changes his dress and mannerisms to go with his heel turn. Gene needed to shut up.
  20. Thank you Pete for the explanation because I was so confused on why Sting would come strolling in with two women. General wrestling contract goofiness.
  21. This was a really great TV match. I thought they used the ladder more than the commenters above have given them credit for and I appreciated the lack of slow climbing with the envelope so low. I also thought the amount they were fighting for seemed fair and not a ridiculous sum of money you saw sometimes in territories.
  22. Tammy looked real good here. Enjoyed her insults to Dirty White Girl. Lee looked like a complete idiot in how long he stood there.
  23. Yeah this was the part of the Bodies gimmick that I didn't like and didn't make them look like threats. Thoughts Morton's promo was fine but he stumbled a few times and this didn't have the fire and energy of previous ones.
  24. That Aerostar fan was hideous. The jacket that Gilbert tore up in the beginning was no great shakes either. These two guys have had probably more angles involving vehicles than anyone else in the history of wrestling.
  25. Tunney changes his office a lot. Great video recap to set up their agenda.
