Only thing I would add to the Territory discussion is how IWA-MS was very influential to Punk and Hero's development and how especially in 2001 and 2003 the promotion was run like a weekly territory and provided for growth of the workers and variety of opponents.

Very though provoking show and it is an issue that I have dealt with on committing so much time on a hobby that I know has very corrupt aspects. Dave, my wife and I have also struggle with weight issues since we have been together and usually are able to lose a lot of weight but not sustain the loss due to lack of commitment to a balanced healthy diet. What you spoke on about the differences in the way people treat you is especially true and while wrestling is a definite extreme of the problem, I would say the U.S. and Canada as a whole has an image problem to some degree.

Came specifically into this forum to recommend the 10/23 tag. I watched that match off of Ditch's site tonight and it was incredible. I never thought I would experience that type of crowd heat in Japan.

is this just a skype thing or something else that causes that. If it is something fixable, I would prefer hearing both guys in one ear bud since I listen at work and usually can only have one ear bud in.

Agreed with most of the choices and was happy to see Dylan rate Ishikawa/Ikeda so high because that is an absolutely brutal match that feels like a war. I was only a little suprise with your ranking of the Dragon Gate 6 man Dave. I saw that live and thought it feel a little flat but part of that could have been attributed that that was the last match of the day in which I watched about 6 hours of live wrestling.

Steamboat certainly wasn't great on the All Japan set ,but I didn't think he was horrible either and the only match I outright hated and thought was bad was the Steamboat/ Snuka match where Snuka carries a ton of the blame. The other matches I ranked low on the set involving Steamer were the Steamboar/Shiek match mentioned above (Thought this match had many great scenes and visuals but lacked cohesive structure) and Steamboat/Mascaras (not a bad match, just a really dull one). The Tenryu and Flair matches were both good to very good matches that just get muddled in the middle with the other top notch stuff on the set. I think Steamboat has taken a little dip in popularity lately as far in the DVDVR and here community. I don't think you would hear anyone champion an argument for him being a GOAT contender anymore like might have happened 5 years ago but he was still a great wrestler that had some pretty great matches in 1982 and 1994 and even the stuff that is disappointing ( I aggree the two Regal matches were disappointing) are still good matches featuring Steamboat not doing many things glaringly bad.

Based on the footage available of him that I have seen, I would put Chavo Guererro in this category. I know the fottage of him from the 1970's is limited but in my viewing wiht the 80's project, he was great in the mid south matches, pretty terrible in the New Japan matches, and only so so in the All Japan stuff.

Favorite show from you guys so far. Learned about some matches I had never heard of and also some more back story on matches I only had a vague reference on including the El Santo match and Strangler Lewis screwjob.

The thing that looks cool to me about the month of June is there is 10 different promotions that produced a 3.5 star match or better.

Watching the whole set I got the same vibe from Tenryu, don't get me wrong he is great pretty much from the 1st Jumbo singles match on the set onwards, but up to that point I was expecting more from him. He has some great performances in the Yatsu/Choshu vs. Jumbo/Tenryu series but he also was what I thought the 4th best worker in most of those matches and his singles matches up to that point (vs. Choshu, Mascaras, Kerry Von ERich) I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed in most of them. Especially the two matches vs. Choshu. Both of those matches ended up around 110 on my ballot and were still good but with someone like Jumbo, he had classic matches with a guy like Slater, Race, Mascaras, and Von Erich throughout the set and Tenryu seemed to really struggle to put it all together until 1987. This early stage of Tenryus careers has really given me pause to call him the GOAT. Top 10 wrestler of all time, I can agree with that because from 1987-1989 he had some great matches and it is not like he was a compelete stiff in the Jumbo/Tenryu tags, but it just seems to me that the main argument against Misawa as GOAT is that he struggled as Tiger Mask and I in a lot of ways fail to see how his first ten years as a pro where any less disappointing then Tenryu's years from 1976-86.

This is my favorite match of all time so it is funny to hear a review where someone calls this match the 2nd best match of the year, and I think to myself, man me and Loss usually have the same opinion on stuff. Once I reread the thoughts again I begin to realize that we both think this is a great match which is really all you can ask for when watching wrestling. Great story, great performances, fully satisfying finish. I started a tradition a few years ago where on Christmas day I carve out enough time to watch this match every year and it never fails to keep me entertained.

Agreed and this is why I stopped subscribing in May and have not regretted it. I think Bryan and Dave really fail to realize the amount of "groupthink" that exists around their website and while they do have a hardcore audience, they are alienating another portion that someone like the Torch capitalizes on.

[1995-04-13-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Toshiaki Kawada vs Kenta Kobashi
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in April 1995
It has been a few years since I have watched a majority of this stuff but when I went through my All Japan kick the Comercial tapes of the 1995 Carny were one of my cherished possessions. I have seen the TV stuff from the 1993 Carny and most of the major matches from 1994, 1996, 1997, and 1998 and there is not another Carny that matches it in my eyes. Even the Baba 6 man hour long draw on the first tape is enjoyable in the 1995 Carny.- 15 replies

This was my favorite episode so far and I could hear talk about the 1980's sets all day long. The Kerry von Erich line was so inappropriate but so hilarious.

Just finished the All Japan 1980's set... now clearing through some recent indy stuff until the next set comes out.

Finishing up the All Japan set, I have to say that Joe Higuchi annoyed me throughout and I was happy when Wada took over as the lead ref in the big matches in 1988-1989. I think what John said was very appropriate in why I think Wada was such a good ref. He certainly wasn't someone who you never noticied but he never took away from the match to get himself over and did everything logical to where he added to the overall match. Heel spot aside, Tommy Young also did this in matches. JOe throughout the All Japan set would seemingly randomnly decide at times to not count falls and enforce rules that had been forgotten throughout the match.

[1995-02-04-ECW-Double Tables] Chris Benoit vs Al Snow
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in February 1995
Agreed that when rewatching the ECW stuff, Joey Styles is a real annoying part of the problem. I think the root of it for me comes from the fact that numerous times he blasts other promotions for what he sees as flaws in their products or inferior wrestling, but when there was a seriously awful match going on (and trust me in ECW there was many) he just went along with his scthick as business as usual. I am not asking him to bury the product but I think JR's "bowling shoe ugly" comments are just the right amount of line marking to nod to the hardcore fans that he is aware that the match sucks without breaking kayfabe completely.- 12 replies

I know on Tim Noels podcast, this was one of the first matches Dean brought up as being on the set and he said it was one of his favorite matches back in the day.- 24 replies

Sad to say that the only time I ever called a hotline, it was for the Hulk one although it was the WWF 1991 one. I can't remember much of it except Hulk blabbering on but my parents gave me this look afterwards of , "were not wasting our money on that shit ever again" so that was that.

I must say I am surprised at how many people are trying to get Bryan Alvarez to trend on twitter. Really showed me how many subscribers and fans of his stay outside of the other wrestling sites I visit (here, DVDVR) since while most of the opinion here on Alvarez ranges from ok to bad, I doubt many people would go out of there way to clog up their twitter feeds to promote his name.

Totally agree on this. Yeah... that would be a good idea. Totally agree with this aspect. I never go to F4W at work because it is so embarassing how the website looks. Its just too easy when hundred of people walk by your desk every day for someone to say. "What is that your looking at" and them being unsure based on what the site looks like. This really bothered me when I was a paying member. I am giving $11.00 a month to the site, is it too much to ask that I don't see Shimmer DVD's and Ultimate Demolition with makeup on the frontpage.

Did Talkshoe eat the episode on the Maritimes?

Seriously that was the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I would be surprised if 75,000 actually stream and pirate the shows in the first place and the fact that at least that many would not only pirate but also buy the show if pirating didn't exist is maddening. Dave is really ignoring what I think are some pretty big indicators of what is a declining company. Will UFC be dead in the next 5 years? Doubt it but when was the last time they received any better than expected news in regards to buyrates, ratings, etc. that was considered good news. I think Nov. 12 will say a lot about where they are and where they are headed.

Glad to see Assassins get close and that Edge was that far off as I figured if he didn't get in he still would be in the 50%- 59% range.
