[1992-01-04-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Rick Rude & Paul E. Dangerously
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
Ill be interested to see when Rude pivots from Sting to Steamboat as his main focal point. This was a demented and devious promo by Paul E and really effective at creating peril for the big face to overcome. Rude and Paul E are an excellent pair here.- 12 replies

[1992-01-04-USWA-TV] The Moondogs vs Jeff Jarrett & Robert Fuller
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
Sweet clips of a big time Memphis blood feud. This helped give Jarrett some credibility as he hangs tough with the Moondog bone shots and dishes it out himself with a vengeance. I liked the announce table tipping over the guardrail to get over the out of control aspect of the match overall. RIchard Lee does well with his physical interaction too.- 17 replies

[1992-01-05-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage & Elizabeth
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
Good interview with Savage looking vicious and vowing some revenge on Jake. The Royal Rumble isn't the most conventional method to keep a blood feud continuing but it does raise the stakes of that match overall.- 15 replies

[1992-01-04-NJPW-Starrcade 1992 in Tokyo Dome] Riki Choshu vs Tatsumi Fujinami
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in January 1992
A good match but it does feel like it ends so abruptly and we never get that extra gear that you as the viewer keep hoping around for. The matwork was done well but the Scorpion was prolonged and wasn't built to particularly well on this night. choshu does get a big win but it doesn't feel as substantial given the way the finish played out. *** (6.1)- 16 replies

I liked this one more here on tonights viewing than at any other point I have watched this match before. I took it at surface level as a big bomb fest featuring four big personalities and that helped the pacing for me to drift away from the spot > spot > spot nature of the match. Muta blows the blue mist to start out which is unique for him. The finish was about protecting the Steiners a bit but came off awkward in execution. ***1/2 (6.9)

Not much more to say for this one other than its one of the 10 or so best matches I have ever seen and like a fine wine, it gets better with age. NO wasted motion whatsoever and the entire arc of Akiyama now having to save his mentor was conveyed so well. Kawada would not be denied and Taue kept the traffic out of the way like any faithful best friend would do for their buddy. ***** (10)

I thought this was good but a step below the prior match due to Krueger being a bit dry throughout the match and the dynamic was not as spectacular as Taka was. Ikeda/Ono continue to gel as a great team. ***

This was neat to see M Pro guys in this setting and Ono was being a huge prick going after them. I loved how fast the pace was here as the match felt like one where the viewer was unable to take a breath while watching it. Ikeda also did a good job here of showing his size advantage which is not always the case when he is up against some Bat Bat regulars. ***3/4

August 2017 Match of the Month: Discussion Thread
soup23 replied to Grimmas's topic in Pro Wrestling
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Tetsuya Naito 8/11/17 A great finale to the Block A G1. This played off of their previous matches in the prior year and had a good bit of a feeling out process with Tanahashi being aggressive and getting a lot of boos. The match revolves around dueling limbwork of the leg of Naito vs the arm of Tanahashi. They mixed this up really well and I thought each limb was sold appropriately by the respective competitor. The nadir of the match was Cloverleaf that Tana locks in that plays off their Dominion match wonderfully and was drained for maximum impact. The finishing run again had some spectacular sequences that never veered off into ridiculousness and the finish felt like a stamp for their trilogy of matches as a whole. -
Always liked NWO invading the announce booth. Bischoff is a great heel already.

Not much more I can add to this but it was super and I loved the face side in particular as a contrast to KDX. Yakushiji, Hoshikawa, Delphin and Sasuke all had moments to shine. Sasuke was FIP for a long time and brought a good overall story to the proceedings. The finishing run is insane and full of action. I wish the crowd would have been better and slightly prefer These Days but this is excellent. ****1/2 (9.0)

I guess I am the high man here as I thought this was pretty great and a good preview of the strong style junior tags we have seen from this point onward. Otani in particular was very dickish and really had gained a lot of confidence being right there on Ligers level and above Samurai as positioned here. I enjoyed the moonsault of Kanemoto for the finish and Otani coaching him along the way. ***3/4 (7.8)

Shockingly, this is my match of the night. They did the best job of conveying the crowd brawling as two hosses going after each other. The finish was predictably awful but Steiner has a aura to him that helps hide his physical limitations and Awesome is again much better in the gatekeeper/monster role that can go toe to toe than the king bully bullshit he was doing in ECW. This show was pretty putrid up to this point especially with the hardcore title/ wedding gown and never ending Perfect Event tag match. This helped kick the crowd back into gear for the finishing stretch. *** (5.9)

Another great match between these teams. After their dominating win in January, No Fear ahem has no fear and goes right after HDA. Taue has his shoulder taped up and they really pounce on that. This was really good action and Taue was awesome in selling the damage as the wounded warrior that was refusing to give up. However, Kawada got tagged in and is a man possessed. I am watching this match a little out of chronological order but between this and the forthcoming 7/1 Fuchi match, Kawada certainly has a fire under his ass and is back to a near peak level. He unloads a ferocious attack on No Fear here that culminates in him locking on a great sleeper/pin combo on Omori that felt like a pissed off choke out. This also follows the plight of Omori as being able to take the big guns to the brink, but not getting that big win besides the surprise 7 second Akiyama victory. **** (7.9)

Burning continues to feud against each other and get a bit chippy as they have lost the title. I look forward to the NOAH debut and like how the main event on the first show was used as a catalyst for their devlopment as team mates because it feels like an engaging story arc to follow. Kobashi gets worked over on the leg a good bit here and Mossman impressed me with his power. Shiga is always undersized but he defends his mentors and really puts up a fight in the name of Kobashi. An overall really good semi-main tag where Kobashi and Akiyama showed some strong glimpses of hate against each other. ***1/2 ( 7)

Another good outing between these two but I did prefer the match from the week before. The interference with the Cartel is something you do expect from Memphis but pretty uncreative here with Wolfie reaping the rewards and Randy Hales on commentary not doing much of anything about it. King continues to impress. **1/2

The Doc reclamation project comes to an end as this is probably the last high profile singles match he has here in the semi of the Carnival. This was kept at a really good length and hit a good clip. Omori looked more vicious here than usual. Even the finish with the lariats had some great bumps from Doc where he looks like he just got shot from a cannonball to put over the power of Omori. Thanks for the 2000 memories Doc. ***1/4 (6.4)

These two after the Taue Triple Crown win in 96 had sort of a weird feud against each other. We get about 75% of this match and the best way I can describe it is it is worked like a Raw workrate match. The work is really good and logical between these two but there is certainly the indication of an extra gear that neither man is reaching into. Taue has some early success but gets greedy on the apron and that opens up Misawa for his big comeback. Misawa use of finishers is always smartly done as he goes with the Tiger Driver for the close nearfall and running forearm here to put away Taue. ***1/4 (6.3 )

Beefy hoss tag that was about what you want from these four. A lot of clubbering clotheslines and some good double team and control sections. The only suspect part of this match was the finish. No Fear has just beat HDA and riding a wave of momentum so them losing here feels ill advised even given the story arc of Doc having a revival as a good worker. *** (6.0)

[1996-12-01-Inoki Festival] Ultimo Dragon vs Gran Naniwa
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in December 1996
I liked this match well enough but there was a lot of repetition and it isn't something that I will be able to retain for weeks to come. The highlight was the hot opening sequence where the fight was really taken to Ultimo. The fallout from that was more of the same in regards to generic junior wrestling. Naniwa doesn't excel too well in non comedic settings from what I have seen. ***- 10 replies

I cant think of many more matches in wrestling history with as much hate as is on display here.. Everything is just laid in without any of the strikes being pulled hardly at all. Garza may have one of the best semi-botches in history as he takes a complete nasty spill off of the SSP. Bring on the apuestas match! ****3/4

Still feeling the pressure from MCW, Power Pro has another full action 3 way. There is so much more wrestling on Memphis now compared to even a few years before. Even 5-6 minutes of a match like we see here feels like an eternity compared to the amount of in ring action we get during some years. Memphis isn't immune to weak finishes as we get a ref bump here and some misdirection. Khan has the oriental spike locked in when the referee recovers and Blade is out. *1/2

Meh. I really just don't see much upside in Conway or Dinsmore. Both are fine wrestlers but have no character traits that grab me. This is worked as a sprint with big bombs and nearfalls. Cornette assured us early on that this would be 1 on 1 which of course means Flash comes out at the end allowing Conway to win. We also get claims of a quick count. So more bullshit in ovw. Yippee. *1/4

Scoot is a pretty damn good wrestler. This didn't have near the action of the Rev Pro tag I watched before but it did have its own set of charm mainly in when Scoot was being the FIP. He does a great job of creating sympathy and then powering through to hit his high spots in the late stages of the match. Jaguar/Sullivan's valet was pretty generic and overall didn't add much. This was a good tag match almost exclusively on the shoulders of Scoot. *** (5.8)
