  4. It's interesting because finding sites like this and CM and all of the stuff that's out there from the territory era has really made me fall in love with wrestling all over again...but in love with THAT era of wrestling. It did nothing to reinvigorate my passion for the current product. I watch Raw but find myself fast forwarding through most of it. I'll pop in an old Southeastern, Mid South, one of Goodhlemet's comps...etc in late at night and watch an hour or two and that satisifies me. I love the old school stuff and enjoy having such a backlog of stuff that I'll have new(old) stuff to watch for years but overall I don't try to keep up.
  5. He is? He's always taking TNA to task for the convoluted storylines and overbooking. Maybe so, but if he's actually blaming Russo for those problems, that's a big new development. As recently as 2007, he was bending over backwards to deflect blame for TNA's failings from Russo onto Jarrett and Mantel. I don't really remember him being an apologist although he does seem to try to be more open minded and generous about things... but he's definitely come down on Russo and has for awhile.
  6. He is? He's always taking TNA to task for the convoluted storylines and overbooking. Russo called out Keller by name and attributed a quote to him that he never said regarding the 1/4 Impact. He did it on his fan page on FB so Wade posted two questions asking him to clarify what he wrote. Russo ended up deleting the whole page. Russo does not like to have anything he says or does questioned or challenged, it appears.
  7. I never really understood the "there's not enough wrestling on the show" complaint. I love watching old school stuff and there's not a tremendous amount of actual wrestling on those shows either. The "non-wrestling" content was a lot better, though. I guess people just got spoiled during the Monday Night War era. The odd thing is, even without the amount of main event matches that today's shows have, I enjoy watching stuff from the late 70's-early 80's more.
  8. Bix had started a thread at this site about Missy's writings: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?showtopic=7013

  10. Rock's film career is doing just fine. His films make money and he has a lot of projects lined up Yup. He had a multi-picture deal with Disney and has really found his niche in family movies. He's definitely considered a successful actor. He is definitely considered legit in this town. It's not like John Cena or Ted Dibiase calling themselves "movie stars"
  11. It was tough to even get by the first part of the article where he quotes the definition of Deconstructionism from Wikipedia, instead of, you know, the Dictionary.

    What if...

I liked this one because it's not "written" so much as just a collection of quotes from people. I thought you got a reasonably fair account of stuff as you heard it from different sides.
  14. In the post I read he was saying that if TNA wants to talk to the fans so badly in a non-kayfabe manner, they could add some kind of "booker's commentary" feature on DVD releases. Basically, the equivalent of a shoot interview talking about what went into that particular show. That way, they can satisfy that desire and keep the show about the show without always breaking the fourth wall. That's what I got from it...
  15. My wife and I have been going through the Joss Whedon-verse over the past couple of years, making our ways through the Buffy and Angel dvd sets. On one of the Angel episodes (I believe it's the fifth season) there's an ep entitled "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco" and it's about the mail guy at Wolfram & Hart, who happens to be a luchador (you would see him walking by in the background in other episodes with the mask on). This ep was definitely written by someone who understood lucha as there were nice references to the masks and his family (there were five "Hermanos Numeros" and they were superheroes in lucha. He became disgusted after the four brothers died and they became mocked...very appropos to how pro wrestling has evolved into even more campiness). Even about how they battled "El Diablo Robotico" and other cheesy monsters like in the Santo movies. It was a really great episode and even touching. It was nice to see wrestling portrayed in a way that wasn't completely stereotypical.
  16. I'm definitely in the camp against "just because you couldn't do it means your critique doesn't have value". As DfA mentioned, it's not very common for a top star to become a great coach. It's usually the guys who are in the background that see the most and really study and understand the game/business. The tricky part is when the critiques come in from people who don't have a total understanding of what they're talking about or have a very narrow-minded view of how things have to be. I think that's where the knee jerk "what do you know, you've never done it" reactions come from. I see the same thing in the TV and movie business. People often give advice or tell me how things need to be fixed but don't have the total understanding of how it's really put together or are just coming from a place of "I think it would be cool to do this."

  18. Yeah, and we would love to see Roger Ebert direct movies and music critics produce albums.... Being a reviewer does not mean they think they could do it better. Ebert did write a screenplay, for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. He readily admits that it was awful. EDIT: SLL already mentioned it. I missed that.
  19. Stan Hansen & Ole Anderson vs. The Samoans (3/27/82 Georgia) One of the Samoan dudes just keeps messing things up, won't sell and Hansen and Ole are getting pissed. It got to the point I started yelling "just stay down and let it end!" at the TV. This isn't The Wild Samoans, btw

  21. There's one for Cornette's Collectibles, but his wife runs it. His wife also has a personal Facebook, but Jim himself doesn't actually have one. Yeah it was Stacey that posted the comment about wrestling companies they would enjoy, not Jim.
  22. Those two matches have been around for a bit now, I think. I had them on a History of Midnight Express v. Rock & Roll Express comp. No, the Philly matches from '86 on the new set were never circulating before (same goes for the version of Cornette-JJ used on the set, though an RF version had been available). Watched the 8/86 match. It was good but I didn't like it nearly as much as the 2/86 match or the America's Team match. Good to know. I didn't pick up the set because I thought it was the same two matches...I'll pick it up now.
  23. Those two matches have been around for a bit now, I think. I had them on a History of Midnight Express v. Rock & Roll Express comp. I remembered LOVING the Fantastics/Midnight Express feud growing up and back then thought that feud was better. Having watched more recently, and seeing their WCCW matches as well, I go with the RnR-Midnights feud. I just think, overall, it has the history and the matches are still great. A lot of the stuff done in the feud with the Fantastics was done first with the Rock & Rolls. I actually got the chance to see a Rock & Roll Express vs. Midnight Express match main eventing a show in Galveston TX when I was visiting family. It was fantastic, even with a small crowd.
  24. I just watched the Luger/Tully vs. Armstrongs match from Crockett Cup '87 and man, what a fun little gem of a match. Brad is on fire and Bob plays elder statesmen and really connects with the crowd. His "cheating payback" spots are really fun. Tully and Lex are stooging and bumping all over the place. A really fun match. It's also interesting to note that Brad is only slightly smaller in musculature than Luger. Their arms are about the same size.
  25. Oh gotcha...you meant for you personally and not necessarily "over time" in the broad sense. I, myself, am not a huge fan of this match. I like it enough but it's not in my top 10 of Lawler matches. My favorite Lawler match would have to be the LLT against Dundee in '83 and his barbed wire against Mantell in '82.
