they waited too long but still as of past September he was getting enormous face reactions and was killing everybody. And in a rare occurrence in WWE booking actually went over in the PPV 6 way to get the title after dominating everyone on TV

well they did listen to crowd response to Orton and it's backfired as he's lost a lot of momentum. They just should have left him playing the same character like they did with Cena in 06/07 It's tricky for promoters because it's not always good for business to listen to crowd pops
  3. Yeah I feel bad for Nattie. Even Josh was burying her. Vince was sending a message last night the only real problem I have with the Cole angle is with him laughing and burying some of the matches. That's okay on NXT but not on RAW and SD
  4. what the hell a personal story as an aside. the Friday after Survivor Series 96 and this show I developed a sore throat. I thought it was just going to lead to a cold but holy shit was I wrong about that. The sickest I've been in my entire life until that point. Turned out I had a severe sinus infection and ended up having to be hospitalized with pneumonia a few weeks later. So it started on November 22 and I wasn't fully recovered till about a few days before Christmas. I missed around 4 weeks of Senior year. I loved Survivor Series and was psyched about this angle but the next month is a real blur. I did order Starrcade that year and attended the last Raw taping of 1996 that had 4 weeks of shows leading up to the Royal Rumble So yeah I always associate this great angle and Survivor Series with feelings of near death!
  5. the girl in the front row who puts her head in her hands in disgust as Shawn is pinned is the demon girl of 96. Great great reaction
  6. I think Mero did as well as could be expected in '98, given that he was never the same after rushing back from reconstructive knee surgery. The top guys (Austin, Foley, Hunter) had no respect for him and didn't want to work with him, so getting his wife over to be more popular than Foley or Hunter was the best thing for his career at the time. I think Mero is a case of wrestlers and fans have different definitions of what a good worker is. I get the sense that other wrestlers thought he was sloppy in the ring sometimes and hurt people. Jealousy was definitely an issue (as Foley basically admitted) though
  7. at the time I remember thinking "This can't be happening in the WWF" It's a shame that the WWF wasn't really interested in building around heels at the time because Jake should have had a run on top and fought all the top babyfaces. I'm pretty sure the WWF caught grief for the snake bite angle and Elizabeth getting slapped so they kind of toned down Jake's character at the begining of 92. Jake/Macho deserved a more proper blowoff than a sub 10 minute match on a FOX edition of SNME

They pretty much had to change around plans because there was no match on the original lineup that would have been any kind of draw. The young guys they've been pushing the last year or so aren't ready to headline the show of the year. Well Del Rio is going to be in a title match but that won't be promoted on the same level as Hunter/Undertaker and well I guess I just don't associate Miz as a "young guy" any longer
  9. what an odd way of promoting a main event match wasn't the end promo at Halloween Havoc enough evidence that Piper wanted to face Hogan?
  10. it was Jake Roberts idea during his short stint on the booking committee
  11. for those keeping track that was a Caddyshack reference from Ol' Kev. I wonder how much of this went over the head of the WCW audience at the time. I loved it but maybe some would say he was making too many archaic references
  12. well this does explain Demolition matches during their babyface reign. Hey I'm going to double ax handle you in the back like 60 times in a row so make sure you keep popping up to take another one
  13. This is obviously anecdotal and maybe after the fact but seeing Jericho's real life personality on Twitter and in the media the last half decade or so I can see that person having a *real* difficult time getting along with Vince McMahon. Being snarky and saying what's on your mind doesn't mesh well with Vince. Everything from 99 on is starting to make sense now Thanks for the recapping Loss
  14. I would put the Dolphins in the national fan base category. Kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s while they were a powerhouse are salivating for them to be contenders again. It's just they've been pretty quiet since Marino retired (12 years ago) and if the NFL doesn't institute a salary cap in the mid 90s we are still getting "Superbowl is over by mid 2nd quarter" games. Incredibly smart move. There is no Cowboys of the early 90s team in the cap era. Impossible to keep all your great players
  15. I don't really remember Woman with Flair in WCW in 1990. My only WCW viewing at the time was the occasional Worldwide and the Apter Mags. It didn't seem like it lasted long and honestly the only thing I remember was how hot Nancy looked. I mean no offense by this but at the time of their pairing Nancy was only in her mid 20s and honestly could have passed for early/mid 30s. Flair was 15 years older than her but that just didn't translate to TV (I guess that was a good thing for Flair). Nothing wrong with that (she still looked great) as this is common in the wrestling business
  16. having gray hair in WWE is a no no they even made Bischoff dye his before he debuted http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/172...se-Entrants.htm
  17. is it wrong that I'm marking out that WWE has signed Kevin Nash? I'm sure it will wear out by mid week or so but now I'm pretty stoked. None of his buddies are on TV now so I really don't see where they use him.
  18. so was I. Pretty sure it was done because of sweeps. Could be wrong about that though. didn't Hogan appear in Savage's corner in a match against one of the Conquistadors in 1988 on Superstars ( or Challenge)?
  19. Nash getting in a Warren Zevon reference! Guy is pretty hilarious and you have to give him credit for sneaking in SNL references, music lines and general pop culture into his promos I also love the Vince Neil line from whatever Nitro that was
  20. This is of course months down the line but Savage joining the NWO made no sense whatsoever. It was obviously done to placate Savage's ego as he was sick of getting beat up all the time
  21. Looks like WWE might be bringing back Booker T. His last reign in TNA was pretty embarrassing as he was going into business for himself and doing goofy accents and voices during serious angles to see if he could land acting gigs. If this is not just a short run I could see him mentoring some of the younger guys in the ring Edit: looks like Meltz said he could also show up in TNA on Monday
  22. Undertaker should have sold his beating (both physically and emotionally) longer and taken a few months off to really sell the angle. That was the original plan IIRC but then he just shows up right away. Still an important angle as Undertaker is becoming "human" for the first time
  23. Bobby Heenan is so drunk at this point in the broadcast that he is slurring his words and is basically unintelligible Tony, bless his soul, is basically working by himself here trying to get this over
  24. off the top of my head here the general criticism of WWF in 1999 online were general "too much talking not enough wrestling" points. You're right though there were no specific complaints about individual wrestlers getting pushed or not. Billy Gunn might be the only exception from that year. Scott Keith was the main figure online who was doubting Hunter would be a good champion. The long blonde hair jokes, etc. just from the boards I frequented back then the Oratory was pretty anti-WWF. Some other guys from the Big 3 Newsboard also (I think that's what it was called this is 12 years ago)
