-Yes, this happened on 7/5. The sets are kinda all over the place on All Japan dates... -The rest of the 4/18 tag isn't nearly as good IMO. Especially the anticlimactic end with crappy old Rusher. -Yeah I meant the 5/25 match. There was a rematch in October that was JIP'ed to hell and isn't on the set (rightly so). Altogether they had four taped matches and none of them aired complete, including TWICE on comms!

In Japan the sit-out tombstone is called a fire thunder driver. It's generally associated with FMW. The 'square driver' refers to the Steiner Square Driver, which is the vertical suplex lift into the sit-out tombstone.

Something about Chono vs Koshinaka makes them better opponents than when they're against other NJ regulars. Neither is good at the kind of chop/elbow/middle kick striking that's the meat-and-potatoes of post-1990 Japanese heavyweight wrestling, neither is especially compelling on the mat, neither has a deep arsenal of highspots, but both have just enough moves and charisma and ring smarts to put together good matches between each other. It helps that they aren't going 25+ minutes though. Lots of heat, blood, and a dramatic finish to cap it off.

Not quite as memorable as their semi-match to start the 4/18 elimination match, but very good of course. I suppose it's a letdown after the title switch, but nobody had high expectations vis-a-vis Ogawa taking part in an 'epic'.

The last time I re-watched Hansen/Taue '94, it definitely struck me that they were working a really smart match. I've shied away from recommending matches like that but I can certainly see it as a top 50-75 match of the year, such that it would deserve a place on the set, ESPECIALLY with the Kobashi match as a lead-in.

I gave the angle a chance but the pacing on this is all over the place. Way too much, then not nearly enough. The resolution for Punk leaving Chicago with the title is so BORING. They're WWE! They can do anything! And they... have him come back because of a title tournament and a hot-shot switch? Not very dramatic.

I never got into this despite multiple viewings. What makes this so beloved? Is it because of being Foley's first big match and an exhibition of his bumping? It sure isn't compelling from a standpoint of storytelling, brawling or what have you.

Pretty sure Misawa was booking. The conflict was that he didn't want to share power with Mrs. Baba. Don't forget that in '99 they won the All Asia tag titles, beat Kawada/Taue on 6/9/99, Akiyama vs Omori headlined the 9/4/99 Budokan show, and they challenged Burning at the 10/30/99 Budokan. Omori had the falling out in '02 regarding his US trip. It's hard to say whether there were hard feelings before then. Don't forget that Omori beat Misawa on 12/8/00.

There's a Williams vs Kobashi 6-man from August that does a wonderful job of setting up their big singles match, if there's still room on the set.

Wright is phenomenal in this feud. Such a scumbag, and the way he milks being in a wheelchair is the sort of thing most promoters would shy away from (ie. the heel would pop up and do interference, clearly healthy).

I've got a soft spot for this. The story of Sasaki (who was returning from injury or an excursion) trying to get one over on his 'big brother', featuring a lot of stiffness and some hard-fought matwork, is the first standout singles match for Kensuke.

Regarding the obvious booking: Misawa/Kobashi won a non-title match during the CC tour. It wasn't taped but I'd bet they mentioned it on TV.

Watched this for the first time in a while. Didn't like it the first couple times, but I didn't DISLIKE it either. This time I was able to pick up on how good this is for a match between limited athletes, like the '84 Baba vs Hansen matches. Taue looks credible going toe-to-toe with Hansen, he makes sure to get payback when Hansen uses a weapon, and he does simple moves that are impressive against someone Stan's size. Both dish out some hard strikes. Stan is fairly generous, giving Taue most of the match, though he pretty much comes back at will because it's not like Taue's offense is overwhelming or anything. Heh, Hansen uses the enzuilariat that was so famously used on Taue the year before by Kawada. This isn't a good 'Triple Crown' match. I mean Taue blows a BULLDOG of all things, and there's a total lack of Kings Road structure. But it's a solid heavyweight match.

Lots and lots to love. -Continuing the Taue's Leg story from 5/22 -The last great Jumbo match -Kobashi's first main event -MISAWA heeling it up -The usual great Budokan crowd, which at this point was like a 2000s Korakuen crowd only ~8 times bigger. I have this 3rd for AJ in the year and 28th for the decade.

Fujinami trained with enough legit guys (ie. Gotch) that he could shoot if the need arose. I just looked at the complete NJ Classics list and that match isn't there.

If that number holds up, it definitely needs to be taken into consideration when the MITB buyrate comes. It can be up 25% or whatever, but if it's below CP with pretty much the same crew on both shows, then the Punk experiment wasn't an initial success. Summerslam is the ultimate test of course, since the SD side is doing the hundredth Orton/Christian match.
