Loss
While the style is different, CMLL is so similar to Houston wrestling in terms of atmosphere -- the ring and acoustics are similar to matches from the Sam Houston Coliseum, and so is the camerawork. I think one of my favorite things about watching CMLL in this time period is that it's not over-produced, but it's not shoddy either. It feels how wrestling should feel in terms of presentation, or at the very least it fits my tastes well. Well, all these guys rock. Some of these pairings and teams are starting to feel familiar, which is nice. Casas and Dandy, Lizmark and Casas, Felino and Dandy, King and Casas ... these guys have all been on opposite sides in quite a few matches on this set all year. And while we're on the subject of Houston Wrestling, Negro Casas would have made a great Southern heel. He could have worked six-mans with the Guerreros in Mid South and they would have been awesome. I felt more like making random observations about the people in the match than talking about the match itself, which is very good. Not at the level of other stuff that I've seen in the year, but a nice cross-section of wrestlers who are familiar at this point of the yearbook working together in a way where you start to get a feel for what their standard spots are with each other. The dive train is out of control at the end, with El Dandy specifically doing a hands-free dive over the top rope to the floor that looks beautiful. Tim Evans
Negro Casas really reminds me of Dundee. When he's a babyface, he's great but as a rudo, he's even better. Loved his antics in the direction of the camera and the biting. Dandy's dive was just nuts.
Zenjo
This was such a blast. Negro's character work was off the charts. Prancing, preening, cheap shotting. He was El Bastardo and had the crowd in the palm of his hands. With El Dandy on the other side he had a great foil. They had this fantastic strike exchange and more besides. Felino also impressed as the workrate was strong all around. Satan was physically slowing down but more than made up for that in other areas. The other 2 tecnicos held their end up. You don't get many trios that even try and be as good as this.
KB8
Man, Casas was so much fun in this. I'm not sure whether I prefer this kind of douchebag Casas or belligerent old bastard Casas refusing to take any shit from Rush, but it doesn't really matter because both are amazing. Dandy is visibly getting more and more annoyed at Casas' horse shit and clearly wants to punch him in the mouth, and you get the great exchange in the second caida with Casas reluctantly putting his dukes up. He catches Dandy with two big shots to drop him (Dandy's KO sell is phenomenal) and he's just glowing with self-satisfaction, dancing around like he had this in the bag all along. Then Dandy catches him with his own shot and Casas is affronted. Casas biting Dandy's shoulder and smirking at fans/into the camera is why he's the greatest. PeteF3
Yeah, Casas is the clear MVP of this match, though everyone looks good. He and Dandy have an absolutely fantastic Memphis-style showdown of punch exchanges, and Casas is just an unbelievable dick all throughout. He even takes time to seek out a camera to whine into about getting fouled. Dandy is awesome too and the clear technico MVP, having that suicidal dive and throwing some awesome kicks--as versatile as Dandy is, and he may be the most versatile wrestler who ever lived, I still never really thought of him as a great striker until now. A terrific bout overall.
soup23
The foul callbacks were great. Negro Casas really gives his first completely awesome performance of 1996 and we really feel the field expanding for WOTY candidates. Him and Dandy's stanza was really impressive and set up a lot of groundwork for later in the year. Satanico was also good in his extended stage Ditto Felino. Lizmark and Silver King felt like the lesser workers here but werent bad and the match evolved nicely throughout all of the caidas culminating in a frantic third fall. ***3/
tim
Very good trios match. Dandy and Casas working together is the highlight and they have some great strike exchange. This match also made me feel like Silver King and Felino had a good one on one match in them. Two wild gives at the end from Silver King and Dandy. I don't think this went into great trios territory, but it was very well worked and entertaining, and everyone looked good.
