[1999-01-11-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair, J.J. Dillon and the LWO

Ric Flair has a little fun with the "Mean Gene" intro to start since he says Bischoff once told him to stop doing it. Flair says the bad news is that Hogan's the champ, but the good news is that he's under contract until 2001 so he's not going anywhere - no movies and no Presidential campaign. Flair then reinstates JJ Dillon as the chairman of the Executive Committee, whose first order of business is that Hogan has to defend the title at SuperBrawl against a WCW wrestler. Announcement of a specific wrestler to come. Next, they're making the main event for Souled Out Scott Hall vs Goldberg in a ladder match, which Gene accidentally spoils. Finally, Flair asks the LWO to come out. The storyline explanation is now that the NWO has injured Eddy Guerrero and sidelined him with a broken leg. Flair wants the LWO to disband. He wants them to take off their shirts and they'll get money, cars and women. Flair promises to take Juventud to Tijuana, which makes him "Whoooo" in a funny moment. But Rey doesn't want to take off his shirt, which makes no sense considering he was forced to join in the first place. Flair adds on more thing at the very end - he's wrestling Curt Hennig tonight. This closes out with a GREAT video - modern WWE quality - of NWA guys sprinkled in with Hogan and Nash images over Flair's promo from Thunder. This is the kind of thing we will just never see done properly by WWE because it's not their history.

It says something that this may be the worst Flair promo of the past two months and it wasn't bad by any means. He reinstates JJ who still a. has terrible fashion for ties and b. does that weird things with his hands. Gene makes matters worse by spoiling the Goldberg main event announcement. Highlight for me was the Juvy/Flair interactions and all LWO members oblige Flair's requests except for Rey which really makes no sense at all with how reluctant he was to join. I want to set up a fantasy booking scenario where Eddy comes back and has big feuds with Flair.

Flair sets the tone by kissing up to Knoxville--good time to do it with Tennessee winning the national title and the Lady Vols at their...Summit, so to speak. He locks Hogan into a contract until 2001, reinstates JJ Dillon (yay), and Dillon announces that Scott Hall's stun gun will be suspended above the ring in a ladder match between Hall and Goldberg.

Flair does more to put over the LWO than any of the announcers have since their inception, then asks them to disband for their own protection. I guess since Eddy's gone and their original raison d'etre is out the window with Bischoff out of power, the concept really is superfluous now. I'd pay money to see a series of skits of Flair and Juvy in Tijuana. Not a bad way to kill a lame-duck gimmick off while, Thunder notwithstanding, letting these guys keep their dignity. Of course Rey's reluctance makes zero sense.

Chill-inducing video to close things out, that really feels like a labor of love on the part of somebody.
