goc
Watching the lucha set, I just watched a Hair vs. Hair match between Arandu & Guerrero Negro from Monterrey that had one of the most insane crowds I've ever seen. It seems like the crowd is ready to break out in a riot after Guerrero Negro loses and afterwards Arandu has to fight his way from ringside to the back. Before that, Arandu's valet has to leave ringside due to a near riot breaking out DURING the match! Seems like hair matches just have a way of bringing out the riots, like when Jerry Lawler lost his Hair vs. Hair Cage Match with Austin Idol due to Tommy Rich's interference and Austin & Tommy couldn't leave the ring due to the crowd being so pissed. So along those lines, what are some of the most insane, out of control wrestling crowds that you've seen? I know there have to be some good examples out there from Puerto Rico with the reputation that territory had.
soup23
First one that popped into my head was the AWA match with Blackwell having to take shots at people as he made his way to the back.
KrisZ
The New Orleans crowd from the NWA TV taping on 7/31/89 was insane.....
flyonthewall2983
The Clash of the Champions from 1989 that was near an Army base, that looked hot as hell, I think Jim Ross says at a couple of points it was in excess of 100 degrees inside the building. Quite a mix of drunk, sweaty grunts and redneck civilians. The event was sponsored by (I think) Coors, and JR does a good job a few times as a pitchman saying how much he'd like one a few times. MikeCampbell
The Mid South crowds, especially in Tulsa and Houma were said to have been especially bad. As bad and annoying as the ECW crowds could be, when Paul ran an especially hot angle, they could get ugly. Until I see differently, I consider Shane Douglas grabbing Gary Wolfe by the halo, to be the heat record.
KrisZ
Here is a taste of the New Orleans crowd I mentioned earlier
jushin muta liger
The match that I saw in the Puerto Rico thread with Abdullah the Butcher vs Carlos Colon in Trinidad pops up in my mind cause of the near riot that happens at the end. I don't have to Lucha set but I will take a look at that match if it's posted online.
GOTNW
The Sumo Hall crowd during Vader's New Japan debut caused them to be banned from the building.
cowboy hats
The Clash of the Champions from 1989 that was near an Army base, that looked hot as hell, I think Jim Ross says at a couple of points it was in excess of 100 degrees inside the building. Quite a mix of drunk, sweaty grunts and redneck civilians. The event was sponsored by (I think) Coors, and JR does a good job a few times as a pitchman saying how much he'd like one a few times. Yeah...I still remember talk of this when in the Network thread when the Clashes first went up. Comments from then: Yep, Clash of the Champions 7 is still one of my favorite wrestling shows of all-time. -The show is at an armory fieldhouse in Ft. Bragg, NC, and it's 100 degrees inside, and the crowd is sweaty and mostly drunk military folk and is hot for everything. Atmosphere is just phenomenal all night long, even for '80s NWA/WCW. -A possible legit overlooked classic in Terry Funk vs Ricky Steamboat, and some other fun matches like Varsity Club vs Steiners, Midnight Express vs Headshrinkers/Samoan Swat Team, and Dr. Death vs Terry Gordy. -One of the all-time WCW Wrestlecrap moments with the debut of the Ding Dongs. -My favorite patriotism-baiting match of all-time with the ex-military man Ranger Ross vs The Terrorist...and the military audience eats it the fuck up... -...followed by Gary Hart leading The Great Muta in a martial arts demonstration that Muta refuses to participate in because according to Gary Hart, he is sick of facing inferior "gaijin" competition. -Coors Light was a sponsor of the show so Jim Ross makes references all night long to wishing he was on his couch drinking a nice cold Coors Light. -a drunk fan charging the ring during the Midnight Express entrance, and Jim Cornette simply saying "We're going to make your night by letting you live!" as he gets swarmed by military security. -a plug for THE HOTLINE featuring Jack Victory dressed as an FBI agent and Paul E. being rudely interrupted by a jobber while calling the hotline...also, JOE PEDICINO'S NOSE! Oh fuck, and you didn't even mention the best line of the night. " No, I don't have any issues. No ego. Just a lot of pride. Let's go, Ricky" Jim Ross: "OH MY GOD WHAT A CLOTHESLINE BY LUGER. LEX LUGER WITH A CLOTHESLINE!!!!" Watched this last night and holy hell was that fun. The crowd was white-hot from the very beginning and Jim Ross' shirt was soaked in sweat by the end of the first match. I thought it was hilarious they left that Hotline commercial in there. How could you forget the Scott "Gator" Hall video? For those who haven't seen it, it's clips of Hall wrestling cut with clips of him poking alligators with a stick and facing off with them on a bridge. Also the karaoke version of "Iron Man" in the Road Warriors tribute video. Got a good laugh at the crowd loudly chanting "Bullshit!" during the Doc-Gordy double-countout. And that Funk-Steamboat match? Wow that was fun. Steamboat works a Funk brawl pretty well and shows some serious attitude, like he's enjoying kicking the crap out of Funk and they have a really great match. About 2/3 through this and a few other notes: - re: Coors Light, at one point Ross hit the double bonus of how he would love nothing more right now than a Coors Light and a slice of Dominos - I can't believe a wrestler's name was The Terrorist - I believe Norman The Lunatic hailed from 'state hospital' - only slightly paraphrased Jim Ross: Norman and Teddy Long have something in common. They have no front teeth. Maybe that's how they communicate? - can't second guess the decision to introduce brian pillman with videos of him at the gym - someone mentioned the scott hall gator video, but it's worth repeating. It was Hall walking near gators, sometimes with a stick, cut with highlights of him getting a two count on a dude and executing a hip toss. - jim cornette looked like a legit 14. so young. - mike rotunda - former national punt, pass and kick semi-finalist! Al
Usually not an MMA fan but this one deserves mention. Renzo Gracie vs. Eugenio Tadeu. Had to stop when the crowd virtually fell into the octagon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PaKER7VSh0
