JerryvonKramer
I'm still wondering where exactly the suplex-heavy style that the Bulldogs and Choshu and co were doing in the 80s comes from. 70s Japanese wrestling much like US and British wrestling in that decade is largely mat-based. I honestly think Harley has a lot to do with it everywhere, and maybe Billy Robinson, then Flair. Bulldogs weren't getting their bomb-throwing style from Inoki or Baba. Does anyone know what the work style was like on Calgary in the 70s? Because Bret is a big offensive worker too.
JerryvonKramer
Enjoying this one a good bit. Marty, on the boring WWF draws -- like that Orton vs. Billy Jack match you mention. I think you've got to remember the stories all the old timers tell about going out, having a great match when they were on second and a Verne or Eddie Graham or Bill Watts chewing their ass and telling them "that's the worst match I've ever seen", because it wasn't appropriate to the card placement and upstaged the main event. I'm not saying that to defend Bob Orton Jr in this instance per se, but the mindset was not to have the best match on the card if you were down in the undercard eating up time. Titans heros Baron Scicluna and, of course, Dom made a living out of the 10-15 minute undercard match that sits there and literally does nothing while people go and buy hotdogs. More or less a bad match "by design". This is why I've come to think Dom and The Baron transcend rating systems.. It's a product of the era and mindset. And so in a sense, I think, is more forgiveable than something like Rude vs. Jake at WM4, which is a match from a featured feud on their main PPV. Matt D
For what it's worth, I'm much higher on Demos vs Islanders than Demos vs Patera/Ax/Boone.
Magpie
If I could watch only one time period and one type of match, it would be the 80s WWF tag team scene. Thank you guys for covering it in such depth, really enjoying re living all these matches. Have some recommendations for you, if you haven't covered them yet. 1984 Andre/Hillbilly vs Stundy Andre/Snuka vs Piper/Schutlz Andre/Sarge vs Sholkoff 1985 Hogan/Hillbilly vs Stundy Tonga/Afi vs Stundy Harts squash matches are good from 85 and 86 as you can see them developing as a team. Hogan/Snuka vs Orton/Muraco Andre/JYD/Snuka vs Jesse/Patera/Studd 1986 Bulldogs vs Dream Team where DT wins after a headclash and Valentine gets a lucky cover as he falls over. US Express vs Harts Dream Team vs Hillbillies Dec 30th 1987 Hogan/Koko vs Kamala/Honky Martel/JYD vs Harts Davey/JYD vs Harts Islanders vs Bees Steamboat/Hogan vs Savage/Honky Three Elimination matches from 1987 - Steamboat/JYD/Piper vs Savage/Race/Adonis, Hogan/Haynes/Piper vs Herc/Adonis/Orndorff, Tito/Jake/Bruno vs Harts/Honky 1988 Steamboat/Savage vs Harts Feb 07th Demos vs Strikeforce when Martel does the injury angle 1989 Rockers vs Harts Dec 12th Rockers vs Rougeaus from London. Goes near half an hour. I feel if this happened on PPV or at least in the US, it would be talked about in glowing terms to this day.
Ricky Jackson
Thanks for the praise man. These shows are a labour of love and it's great people are digging them. Those recommendations look really solid. I've seen a few of them over the years but a lot I haven't. We are planning on looking at some of the 87 ones for sure. Love "Stundy", not sure about "Sholkoff".☺ Hogan and Koko vs Kamala and Honky is definitely topical
SomethingSavage
Just wanted to chime in and add a little love to the pile. I've downloaded every ep as they became available, but I never took the time to listen - because of both hectic work schedules AND the fact that I get into a routine of listening to certain podcasts as priorities. But I recently started burning through this series, and I'm absolutely enjoying the hell out of it.Marty's one of those guys with an infectious energy & enthusiasm in his voice. Even if I don't always agree with some of his opinions, the guy's just got a lot of excitement in what he has to say. For instance, the narrative he created as a counterpoint to the Rockers/Rose & Somers rivalry was excellent. Whereas a lot of people would shit on the layout and the structure of the story being told, Marty busts out a spin on the whole ordeal that actually makes sense and builds as a progressive "coming of age" story for the young Midnight Rockers. I caught myself just nodding along and agreeing with him actually. And Kelly's a great guide - giving insight, backstory, and establishing context when it's needed. You guys are a killer combo of grizzled veteran detective & rookie cop on the beat. Big thumbs up to that. Also like the way this brings fresh takes to old matches, stories, and workers from the tag scene of that time. There's already a handful of things I want to go back and review for myself now that you guys have brought them back to my attention. And I think that's sort of the point. Magpie
Heard Marty talking his man love of Studd's Bodyslam Challenge. I hadn't seen this clip before and I was't aware that Studd was doing this angle as early as February 19, 1983. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLpaDeqxwyE

As long as you guys keep pumping out TTBA, I'll keep listening. I look forward to your 87 show. Stundy and Sholkoff came from texting a friend, who also loves the 80s WWF. I got sick of typing Bundy and Studd, and also Shiek and Volkoff anytime I watched their matches, so I came up with a shorter form of the names. On You Tube, there is an uploader named Monsoon Classic that you've probably run across in your research of your show. Many matches from the WWF 80s tag teams there. Superstar Sleeze
Thanks, Magpie & Savage! Appreciate it. Like Kelly, Hogan/Koko vs Kamala/Honky definitely leapt off the page. Magpie, if you havent already, definitely indulge in Strike Force vs Islanders, by far my favorite WWF 80s tag feud. Savage, what do you think would happen if Sleeze logic met Johnny logic? None of this would be possible without Chief Jay Historian and 4x time Brainbuster champion, Kelly, your host and mine, and one helluva man! Marty, I have 3-4 Strike Force/Islanders matches, and yeah, good stuff. Also have some singles stuff of Martel vs Haku and Tama. Ricky Jackson
Cool. These look interesting. Just a heads up fans, look for a new show around Tuesday or Wednesday, after all the fuss over this weekend has subsided. Marty and I will be looking at some super fun matches from Jan-Feb 1987
goc
Eventually you guys need to head to Alabama and Continental. Lots of good tag team stuff there with Fuller & Golden vs. The New Guinea Headhunters, Nightmares vs. Johnny & Tommy Rich, Nightmares vs. Dirty White Boy & Jerry Stubbs plus the hidden gem of Fuller & Golden vs. Adrian Street & The Bullet
Migs
One I always really enjoyed was Martel / JYD v. the Hart Foundation, from summer or fall of '87, I guess right before Strike Force became a thing.
