Draft discussion, analysis and trash talk

Recommended Posts

It's not just simulating the financial aspect, it's also taking into account does he fit in the territory's established history or with the talent already drafted? I mean if JCP didn't want him his value to most other people isn't as high as it would be to them. He mostly worked up and down the east coast in JCP, WWF & Toronto areas so outside of that "name value" really doesn't even come into account.

I'm glad this draft is about done because people are cracking under the pressure of "Why was this guy who sucks in 1983 drafted over this other guy who sucked in 1983?"

But for the record, I also saw Hanson on the "not eligible until August list" or he would have gone about three rounds ago.

I'm not "cracking" over it I just don't understand what value does he really have if he can't sell a ticket. He costs more than another guy on the card who is also not selling tickets.

He worked Amarillo too and Flordia. Hawk and Hanson were famous everywhere though like Patterson and Stevens. A team everyone had heard about or read about.

I guess money is the disconnect here since we're not simulating it pay is not a consideration. But seem people are imagining it is.

I think this is likely an exaggeration but neither of us can really prove anything when it comes to arguing over it. I will just simply say he wasn't a fit for me. Didn't have any established history in Southwest and I am trying to roleplay that I can't just use people in ways they would never have agreed to and San Antonio was on the very low tier of promotions and you'd have never gotten a Swede Hanson to go there and essentially be a job guy.

Man have you seen their shows on USA Network? It's the same kinda guys who were there before they had a national TV deal. That deal didn't last long anyway. The starting roster isn't loaded with big names, even if you add in Gino who was there until May.

Southwest was a stop-over territory. It's title histories are loaded with vacancies from guys who just said "fuck this" and left. Yes, guys like Wahoo & The Funks would work there sometimes but it was mostly just dropping in for a little bit never really for an extended stay.

Joe Blanchard had a lot of plans, not many of them seemed to be all that good. He had a plan to run against WCCW in Fort Worth in 1983 at the height of Freebirds vs. Von Erichs. It went poorly. He tried to run against Paul Boesch in Houston in a city where Paul Boesch was beloved. Those names you mentioned would work Southwest but I wonder if it wasn't like working Hawaii for guys who wanted to go back to Texas for a little bit.

Yeah I have, but I guess only when the big names were passing through. Funks, Brisco, Wahoo, guys like that. I think I have that perception though more cos I heard someone talk about it on a shoot that Blanchard even had plans of going national at one point, more like 81-2 time.

He may have been thinking about going national as late as 1983. I read about Southwest running some shows in Ohio but this is the only result I could find. Not a very good lineup for breaking into a new area.

September 1983 - Warren, Ohio

1. Ivan Beulah beat The Mercinary

2. Rocky Jones Mike Masters defeated The Chopper

3. Luis Martinez defeated King Kong Casey

4. Scott Casey beat Bobby Jaggers

MAIN EVENT

For the Southwest Heavyweight Title

5. Tully Blanchard defeated Tiger Conway Jr.

to retain his title

"I find that highly unlikely."

According to Meltzer the 3 shows they ran in Fort Worth started at 300 then down to 125 & they stopped at 31.

This was my summation of Southwest & Joe Blanchard when talking to someone about why I wanted them:

"Southwest never really drew. It's title history is filled with title vacancies due to guys just saying "fuck this" and leaving overnight. It was a pimple on the ass of the wrestling business that no one even thought enough of to pop. Joe Blanchard fucked over everyone who ever did business dealings with him, stealing San Antonio from Fritz because he didn't want to pay Fritz his cut anymore. Then he got Paul Boesch to stop using Fritz's guys and use Blanchard's crew instead for his Houston shows and ended up trying to run against Boesch in Houston a few years later."

Southwest, WWA & All Star are probably the easiest territories to book better than what they were.

Dylan, was Burrhead Jones ever billed as Rufus's or SD's brother?

The article says they teamed as cousins:http://www.mikemooneyham.com/2003/02/23/burrhead-jones-legend-of-the-ring/

I actually read up on everything I could find about him after coming across him in a job match in Continental and wondering why this job guy was so over and had such obviously well known taunts and dances.

Jones enjoyed one of his most successful runs in the business teaming with a cousin he met in New York several years before turning pro. He and Carey “Buster” Lloyd, a Dillon native who would later become Rufus R. “Freight Train” Jones, one of wrestling’s most popular performers, worked out at the same 42nd Street gym.

The two first teamed in New York in the late ’60s and again in the mid-’70s for Charlotte-based Crockett Promotions, becoming one of that company’s top acts. One of their most memorable matches saw Burrhead Jones take a seemingly vicious beating at the hands of “bad guy” Black Jack Mulligan in a 1976 bout televised in Raleigh, N.C. It was a textbook angle that is still talked about in wrestling circles today. “Burrhead really got instant recognition with that angle with Mulligan,” recalls 16-time world heavyweight champion Ric Flair. “He was a good worker, a great guy, and always in a super mood.”

Goc covered it, but Burrheads association with Rufus made him a star even as a jobber, outlaw and "legend" on indie shows down here before he moved back to New York. Some of the craziest reactions I've ever seen live were for teased and/or limited Burrhead physical interactions. He was working Carolina outlaws in 83, he's an awesome guy, and I think he's a steal for my last pick.

He either made a huge impression on people in that area to where they remembered him for years (at least into 1986 for Alabama) or he just had some kind of crazy charisma that instantly made people like him. Maybe some of both.

So that's Cross Face Chicken Wing (AWA) & DylanWaco (Portland) out for sure. I think dedhemingway (Central States) is out per his proxy requests but I will let him confirm/deny that. dkookypunk43 (Mid-South) gave me control over his draft and I am pulling him out after the next pick I give him because he will have like 4 or 5 jobbers at that point.
