Smack2k
I have become really into Lucha wrestling over the last couple weeks, but going through lists and such, its easy to find which matches are the Wager matches (which I have loved to watch), but most lists I see dont mention if a match is a title match and I'd like to watch a bunch of those due to the difference in styles detailed in a few podcasts. The only title match I have seen so far on my dive into Lucha was Blue Panther vs. Atlantis from 91 and I really enjoyed it. I would love to have some 80's - 90's title matches recommended. So what should I track down / watch?
Bierschwale
The no-brainer thing to do would be say "any title match with El Dandy" and that is exactly why I will do it.
Matt D
Also, anything with Satanico. The Rocca vs Mocho Cota matches too.
goc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5c5A5BVyds and here is a nice title match between Satanico & Sangre Chicana that was discovered after the lucha set was already out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUnYYgYE1bs
pol
I guess this would be a good place to ask: does anyone know exactly what the special title match rules were? I remember some 80s footage with Japanese commentary where they mention no toe kicks several times.
Matt D
Not a ton of 80s here (though some), and this is a clunky way to go about it but we've covered a ton of them on SC over the years: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=site%3Asegundacaida.blogspot.com%20%22title%20match%
Smack2k
Thanks a ton Matt and Goc...I will go through those... I can find a ton of matches with El Dandy and others, but hard to tell when looking if its a title match or not, which is why I was looking for specific matches...this a good start...appreciate it. ohtani's jacket
There's not that many title matches from the 80s available. These were the highest ranked matches on the lucha set:Gran Cochise vs. Satanico (9/14/84) Mocho Cota vs. Americo Rocca (1/27/84) Mocho Cota vs. Americo Rocca (2/3/84) El Dandy vs. Emilio Charles Jr. (12/1/89) Pirata Morgan vs. Brazo De Oro (11/17/89) These matches rounded out the top 50: Villano III vs. Perro Aguayo (10/7/84) Lizmark vs. El Satanico (April 1984) Atlantis vs. Emilio Charles Jr. (8/12/88) Not sure about the date on that last one. Some of the dates on the lucha set were iffy. For the 90s, Bihari's old 4 star lucha list includes title match listings -- http://www.luchawiki.com/index.php?title=Top_Lucha_Matches_of_All-Time Dandy vs. Azteca, Dandy vs. Casas and Dandy vs. Llanes have good reps. Loss really likes Dandy vs. Black Warrior as well. The list doesn't include Santo vs. Espanto Jr from '92 which surfaced after it was made. The most underrated match on the list is Rayo Jalisco Jr vs. Apolo Dantes

elliott
This Satanico vs Pierroth match isn't the best or most beautiful lucha title match, but I really dig it and would definitely call it a great match and if I don't recommend it no one will
Tim Cooke
Brazo de Oro vs. Pirata Morgan from November 1989 may not be for a title (don't remember) but it is worked title style. The Santo/Espanto Jr. match from 5/92 is a terrific title match, as is their 4/88 match.
ohtani's jacket
The Morgan/Oro match is for the NWA World Light Heavyweight Title, which just goes to show how difficult it is to remember which matches are title bouts.
