A fiery brawl between two of the greatest of all time and they make the little things matter. For example, during a punch-off (there's many great punches in this, although that should come as no surprise to anyone who's seen either man before) Hansen ends the exchange by kicking at Funk's swinging hand. Hansen takes control early on and drops some knees to the neck of Funk and he starts withering on the floor and this puts the crowd firmly behind Terry. Everything eventually falls apart and a ref ends up eating a nasty Western Lariat. It's a damn shame we don't see brawls like these anymore. ★★★★½

Stan Hansen vs Terry Funk - AJPW 9/11/82

If I had to choose between fighting the bear in the Revenant and Stan Hansen, I may just choose the bear. Hansen is a force of nature and is relentless beating down Funk. There is a point where Hansen grabs a double leg and just wont let go and Funk has to claw and wrench his nose to break free. Funk gives as good as he gets, but everytime Hansen has an answer. Normally, I would be disappointed in a babyface that powders and backs away from a heel, but when you are facing Hansen it is justified. It adds weight to the challenge that you really have to weigh you options when you are facing that crazy sadist. There is a point where Funk throws a chair into the ring and for a second Hansen is going to hurl it back, but he actually takes a step back and makes sure to nails Funk with it. OW! Funk is able to bash his head off the table and then side step the lariat and send him into the ref wiping him out. Hansen blasts the second ref with a LARIAT to a pop. A wrestler I don't recognize holds Funk who takes a brutal Lariat that looks like it could have broke his neck.

Insane brawl. Funk looked great just trying to survive. He sold the match so well in how he was going up against monster, but was not going to back down. Hansen is every bit that bully heel. Huge punches from both guys. Just nasty. Really entertaining brawl. ****1/4

It’s ridiculous how over Funk is with the fans as they’re trying to tear the jacket from his back. Hansen doesn’t give a flip about any flowers and only wants to get his hands on Terry. Funk does such a terrific job selling the unsinkable battleship that is Hansen, staggering round like a drunken hillbilly and bailing from the ring when things get too rough. Love the spasmodic way he takes Stan’s knee drops. Terry conveys a great sense of anxiety throughout, the way he’s shoving around the young boys at ringside or snatching Hansen’s nose to break a hold. In probably the best moment of the match, he blindly throws a chair over his head into the ring and #1 Boss Hoss Stan Hansen catches the chair one handed and chunks it back at Terry. The end is chaos as Hansen knocks out one ref and lariats the replacement. Ron Bass or somebody interferes on Stan’s behalf, allowing Stan to hit the lariat before he starts kicking the shit out of everyone, including Jumbo and Baba.

A great spectacle and a furious brawl, even though I feel like they could have done even better together. The slugfest was simply top notch, so so many great punches and even the slightest detailed mattered, like their face expressions, body language, holding the ropes etc. Hansen's control segment on Funk was also good, but already a few notches down, despite the crowd's positive response. Funk's selling was on point, as usual, but Hansen could have done more here and never took this to the next level. Also, I didn't care for the finish, not much because of the count-out itself, but it was quite confusing and the referee bump looked a bit clumsy. They'll do much better in 1983, but this was a precious stepping stone
***1/2
