Dr. D. David Schultz?

Anyone ever reviewed this guy? What are the opinions of him? I know there's not a lot of stuff. Curious.

Seriously though, someone wrote quite a bit about him in one of the wrestling books - I want to say Dynamite Kid, but I can't be sure (and I can't remember what was said, but I believe it was positive).

I remember the Stossel incident. But what are the opinions of him as a wrestler in-ring? He could cut a nasty promo but in-ring work is few and far between. He came across as a mean sob in his interviews. I know he was difficult to work with by account. What's with this guy?

I've only seen him on TNT, but that piece in his house with his wife and kids and also the match against Hogan, although he was beeing pummeled pretty much all the time, really had me interested. I'll need to seek out some of his stuff one of these days.

I remember seeing a match between he and Hogan for the WWF title which must have taken place right after Hogan won the belt from The Iron Sheik, some time in 1984? This was...34 years ago or so, but I still remember Shultz bled quite a bit. I remember it being a really fun brawl, but that may be rose colored glasses, since I was 14 at the time. I should check and see if it's available anywhere. I vividly remember it being one of the bloodier matches I'd seen up to that point, (which didn't involve Abdullah The Butcher or Bruiser Brody.)

 

After he got fired from the WWF due to the Stossel smacking incident, he showed up in the Montreal territory, which had TV in my area. He actually came in as a face and feuded with Steve Strong (aka Steve DiSalvo) and I remember they had some okay (if somewhat sluggish) TV brawls. He was in Stampede too, but that was before I watched them on TV.

 

The only other thing I know, is from my boss (at the time) talking to a guy who worked the TV tapings for Montreal's territory "International Wrestling." They were talking about what the wrestlers were really like backstage, and this guy told my boss that Shultz was a total nut, carried a gun, and that all the other wrestlers were legit terrified of him backstage. They were supposedly scared that if they even accidentally hurt Shultz in the ring, he'd go mental on them and kill them or something.

 

Normally I'd write that off as gossip, except everything I've read about the guy seems to jibe with that story. Heath McCoy's book about Stampede and Dynamite Kid's book both mention that Shultz was wrapped a little tight, and the Stossel incident seems to bear that out. I remember hearing an urban legend that Shultz ended up becoming a bounty hunter after retiring from wrestling?

 

I think the book on "Dr. D." is that he was a half decent brawler who was a bit of a kook, so he never stayed in one place long as a result. But I'm hardly an expert. I vividly remember the Hogan match from 1984, and his time in Montreal, but that's it as far as my personal experience.

I love Dr D. Mainly for the promos. There's one on youtube where he wears a T-shirt with a swastika on it, accuses Jerry Lawler of having AIDS, then claimed to have rogered Lawler's and Bruiser Brody's wives. He's just so pro wrestling.

Dr. D is an awesome character and promo and decent in the ring. He and Dennis Condrey were a team for a little while in Memphis (and possibly Southeastern) and MAN do I wish we had more of them together because that's like the perfect redneck rasslin tag team.

 

I desperately wanted to get them in the 1983 Fantasy Draft and have them feud with The Fabulous Ones but I couldn't make it happen.

I know Bret Hart loves him from his Stampede days.

The Hogan match was on one of the Coliseum videos. The Schultz Piper v Andre Snuka match at MSG was pretty good too.

He built his house with his bare hands. He was on the list to go on the Space Shuttle. His dummy wife wears a rope for a belt and serves fried chicken and pizza when the TV is there and the sink looks like the city dump.

I recall Schultz working as a TV jobber in Memphis. It was 1976 when he broke out . Schultz was put in a makeshift heel tag team with Roger Kirby . One rookie and one veteran. They beat Big Bad John and Bill Dundee for the NWA Southern tag team titles.

 

The Monday night title change was set up on Saturday TV . Big Bad John was bragging to Lance Russell that he had just beat up 20 men in a bar fight on Friday night. Big John said he whipped 20 men all by his self. Then John went to the ring for a singles match. Suddenly , Schultz and Kirby hit the ring. They just beat the hell out of Big Bad John .

 

Schultz and Kirby told Lance that Big Bad John is a liar, he cannot even beat two men much less 20 men. That is the first program for David Schultz , direct from the mind of Jerry Jarrett.

 

Later . Schultz joined Lawyer's Army. He team with Dutch Mantell and won the Southern tag belts.

 

He moved on to work for Ron Fuller. He team with Dennis Condrey in Southeast . of course they were SE tag champs. Schultz also had a run as SE champ.

 

Schultz look to be set up as a top heel in Southern territories. Then , suddenly he moved to Calgary and said gone for years. Does anyone know the reason ? Did he have heat with Jarrett , Lawler and/or the Fullers ?

 

On a unrelated note. Big John was the first wrestler to ever refer to Bill Dundee as the Superstar.
