Pacific Wrestling Showcase from the Oakland Alameda County Arena, Oakland, on ESPN / TSN, October 16th , 1991

Michael Modest vs. Jackson Fox

Just one week to go before Calgary Combat and one of the undoubted highlights of that show will likely be the finals of the 1991 Tournament Of Lions . Michael Modest will be one of the two finalists and showed why in this match. He showed poise and confidence as he capable handled the rookie Fox, easily dispatching him with the Reality Check . It's no wonder that , in the eyes of the fans, he is considered one of the breakout stars of the PCW 1991 rookie class .

Chris Hamrick vs. David Young

For much of his time as part of the Oregon Wrecking Crew , David Young has been in the sizable shadow of his partner, Gary Albright. Lately, though, Young has made a bit of a name for himself and has been gathering momentum in his most recent matches. He was facing an extremely capable and determined opponent in Confederate Currency, who came close to taking the match at a few different points in the match . Young managed to stay strong and planted Hamrick with his dreaded Spinebuster Slam for the win. Word has it that Young has started referring to himself as the Messiah Of The Spinebuster. Hmmm , something tells me that Big Bully Busick might just have something to say about that.

Steve Williams vs. Mosh

The Headbangers have had an impressive amount of success on their own for a young team. That said, they might be regretting their loose affiliation with the League Of Gentlemen . Dr. Death may have been facing Mosh, but was clearly seeing Mike Awesome as he basically rolled over the Headbanger, crushing him with a backdrop driver on the way to a dominant win. Mosh was clearly wobbly legged as he left the ring.

Alex Wright vs. Zach Wurtenberger

Wright, the other finalist for the Tournament Of Lions, stands in a stark contrast to Michael Modest. Das Wunderkind arrived in PCW full of confidence, overly so. The second generation wrestler was clearly blessed with considerable athletic gifts, but a roving eye for pretty women led to a well earned reputation as someone lacking in focus. The efforts of Dean Malenko to get Wright's feet on the ground paid off with some key wins, earning him a spot in the finals of the Tournament Of Lions. Now, with Wright on the verge of breaking through to the next level, the Sinister Minister seems hell bent on undoing all of that work with his constant nagging from ringside. Even after Wright easily defeated Wurtenberger with a German Suplex, the Sin Min was still on his back for not getting it done sooner, and Wright had a dejected look on his face as he returned to the locker room . The Sinister Minister may well be on the verge of ruining a good thing .

Pierre Carl Ouellet vs. Rick Martel

Ever since turning his back on the fans and his former friends, Martel has mostly been dealing with Barry Windham, but his fellow French Canadian Pierre Carl Ouellet is also clearly disappointed in him. There seemed a bit of a personal edge with every shot PCO fired at Martel, and he was firing a lot of them. Martel held his own, but seemed a bit taken by surprise at how infuriated his countryman was with him. PCO nearly got him pinned with a rollup out of the corner, but Martel rolled through and just barely got the three count assisted by a fistful of tights. A very close escape for Martel, but he is learning fast just how many fan favorites are angry with him .

Pacific Light Heavyweight Title Match : The Lightning Kid © vs. Little Guido

Little Guido is another wrestler who can's seem to make his manager happy, but while Alex Wright has been successful in the teeth of his manager's disappointment, Guido has made some unfortunate blunders to earn the ire of Jim Cornette. And Wright can at least count on the support of Dean Malenko, Guido is finding his cousin Big Vito just as disapproving , despite initially having his back. Both Cornette and Vito were at ringside for this match, but gave Guido's efforts a frosty reception as he took on the Light Heavyweight champ. Guido did the best he could , but the champion proved too much for him, and the Lightning Kid took the victory with the Lightning Strike (Tombstone). Guido got no support from his manager or his cousin after the match, and had to help himself back up and to the locker room .

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Cow Palace , San Francisco,  on Pacific Super Cards on ESPN / TSN, October 17th , 1991

Steve Blackman vs. Dennis Condrey

Condrey was clearly on top of his game, defeating Blackman with the Gourdbuster .

David Cash vs. Sabu

Sabu seemed keen to take advantage of Dutch Savage's recent announcement about relaxation of rules enforcement, particularly with his use of tables being mentioned. Cash was actually able to take advantage of this, coming back to attack Sabu whenever he tried to get at or set up a table. He even busted open Sabu by slamming his head on the edge of a table. After a big dive from Cash , landing on Sabu outside the ring, neither man was able to make it back in the ring, leading to a double countout finish.

The Smoking Gunns vs. The Dudley Boys

The Dudleyville Duo bested the genial cowboys by way of the Three D on Billy .

Bret Hart vs. Fit Finlay

In a fierce battle, Hart was unable to get Finlay in the Sharpshooter but was still able to take down the Belfast Bruiser with a running clothesline .

Barry Windham vs. Buddy Rose

Rose has had some incredible battles with Windham in the past, but coming in with bruised and bandaged ribs was too much of a disadvantage, and Windham beat the Playboy with the Western Lariat.

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Toshiaki Kawada © vs. Sgt. Slaughter

Sarge put in a determined challenge for the top title, but Dennis Condrey snuck down to ringside and ambushed him with the Full Nelson Facebuster on the floor, leading to Kawada winning by countout.

Pacific Coast Wrestling show from the Selland Arena, Fresno, October 18th, 1991

Shane Douglas vs. John Tatum

Douglas continued his comeback, taking down Hollywood John with the Belly To Belly Suplex .

The New Foundation vs. The Headbangers

Mosh was still not back to full strength from his earlier match with Steve Williams, getting pinned after the Rocket Launcher .

Jerry Lynn vs. Eddie Guerrero

Both of these wrestlers are on incredible hot streaks, and put on an absolute barn burner of a match. It looked like it would go to a 20 minute time limit draw, but Eddie was able to hit a brainbuster at around the 19 minute mark, and swiftly followed up with the Frog Splash for the win .

The Thrillseekers vs. Iron & Steel (Tony Atlas & Larry Cameron)

In a battle of speed vs. power, Jericho and Storm squared off against the former champs and were able to pin Atlas when Jericho caught him in a Victory Roll , giving the Canadian duo one of their biggest victories yet.

California Title Match : Rob Van Dam © vs. Jason Jett

Perhaps inspired by his partner's efforts against Sabu , Jett put in an incredible effort against the California champ. Partway through the match, Sabu came down to the corner of RVD, leading to David Cash's arrival to back up Jett. Eventually, Sabu attacked Jett, and when Jett jumped in to defend his partner, the ref ended up declaring a no contest.

Chris Candido & Special Forces (The Eagle & The Scorpion) vs. Sean Morley , Scotty The Body & Stevie Richards

Candido and Morley were eager to tangle with each other, Scotty and Stevie were less keen to face Special Forces. Regardless, Scorpion was able to catch Stevie with the Scorpion Death Drop and pull out the victory .

I think Modest has the edge going into the finals because Sinister is messing with Wright too much

OOOOHHHH Young better watch himself or Busick will show him who owns the Spinebuster Slam

Yea, Mosh will be feeling that for awhile

Martel always had the smoothest handful of tights rollups. Just ask PCO

Poor Guido, I'm starting to feel bad for the guy

Cow Palace

Condrey sends another message to Sarge

Sabu's not the only one taking advantage of Dutch's leniency

Dudley's win a battle

Hart gets a respectable win over a man everybody respects

When going up against Windham, you better be 100%

Man, Condrey sends an even stronger message to Sarge.

Fresno

Douglas just can't lose right now

Anvil's streak continues

Props to Eddie for that finishing sequence after 20 minutes of non stop action

HUGE win for the Thrillseekers

I think things are about to get really crazy

Scorpion has really gotten into the heads of the Playboy Club

Pacific Coast Wrestling Calgary Combat from the Saddledome, Calgary

Battle Royal For A Pacific Heavyweight Title Shot At San Diego Battleground Including : Bret Hart, Mike Awesome, Chris Adams, Bam Bam Bigelow, Fit Finlay, Steve Blackman , Pierre Carl Ouellet, Chris Hamrick, Buddy Rose, Sean Morley, Buddy Rose, Roddy Piper, Chris Candido, Barry Windham, Rick Martel, Sgt. Slaughter, Dennis Condrey, Tony Atlas, Larry Cameron, Little Guido, Big Vito

Pacific Coast Wrestling returns once again to the Stampede City for the annual tradition that is Calgary Combat, and a big part of that tradition is the Battle Royal for a shot at the Pacific Heavyweight Title. Toshiaki Kawada has been a dominant champion, and the elite of the West Coast came in eager to earn their shot at the champ. In most of these battle royals (battles royal?) , there is usually a pair of wrestlers whose hatred for each other is so intense that they ignore everyone else in the ring to go after each other. This year, those two wrestlers would be Sgt. Slaughter and Dennis Condrey, who tore into each other with such single minded intensity that they failed to notice PCO, Buddy Rose, Barry Windham and Mike Awesome advance to casually flip them over the top rope. Sarge and Condrey paid that no mind, and continued to slug it out on the way back to the locker room. Big Vito went on a bit of a tear, knocking out Hamrick, Atlas and Cameron, but when Little Guido screwed up an attempted assist while Vito was battling with Barry Windham, this led to an in ring collision. Windham capitalized on the confusion, clotheslining both out of the ring. Vito verbally lambasted his cousin as they left the ring. Rose and Morley double teamed Roddy Piper to eliminate him from the match, but Chris Candido avenged his mentor with a dropkick that send Morley flying out of the ring. Candido kept after Rose, but got too reckless and the Playboy managed to sneak in a cheap shot. He capitalized by throwing young Candido out of the ring. Longtime rivals Fit Finlay and PCO worked surprisingly well together, capitalizing on Martel and Windham's battle with each other to toss them out to the floor. Their pairing didn't last long, as a massive double clothesline from Mike Awesome took them both out of the match. Adams hit a Superkick on Blackman, sending him over the top, and it was now down to the final five. Bret Hart and Bam Bam Bigelow regrouped in one corner of the ring, while Chris Adams , Mike Awesome and Buddy Rose buzzed like angry hornets in the opposite end. Bigelow acted as blocker on Awesome and Rose as Hart wore down Adams. Hart hit an inverted atomic drop on Adams, then hoisted him over the top to the floor. This should have been the end of it for Adams, but he rushed back into the ring and nailed Hart with a Superkick to the back of the head. As the officials ordered Adams from the ring, Rose was able to sneak past Bigelow and throw the Hitman out, eliminating him from the match. The crowd were audibly crestfallen that their hometown favorite was no longer in the match. Rose took a moment to mock both Hart and the fans, then found himself crushed in the corner by Bigelow with the Asbury Park Avalanche. Bigelow then tossed the Playboy to the floor. It was now down to Bam Bam Bigelow and Mike Awesome. Bigelow tried to keep up his momentum, whipping Awesome into the corner then charging in for another Avalanche, but Awesome dove out of the way and Bam Bam crashed into the corner, flying over the top as he did so. The crowd gasped, thinking the match was over, but Bigelow was able to grab the top rope at the last second, landing on the ring apron to save himself by rolling under the bottom rope into the ring. Awesome capitalized with a running knee drop, then raining down shots on Bam Bam. He dragged the Beast From The East to his feet and whipped him into the ropes, going for a clothesline. Bam Bam ducked the clothesline and came back from the other side , nailing Awesome with a running headbutt like a torpedo. Bigelow then hefted Awesome up with a truly impressive press slam and hurled him out of the ring. Bigelow was triumphant and had won that most coveted prize, the Pacific Title Shot. Awesome was livid at his elimination, but PCW security intervened and he reluctantly made his way to the back. Bret Hart came out to embrace his friend and raise his hand in victory. The main event for San Diego Battleground was now set : Toshiaki Kawada would defend his Pacific Heavyweight Title against Bam Bam Bigelow .

Fastball (Bobby Horne & Robert Thompson) vs. Coast 2 Coast (Jack Tatum & Jack Victory)

Fastball have had an interesting path in their rookie year. For much of 1991, Trisa Hayes' team have had a good reputation with the fans mostly as a good time team, guaranteed for a fun time for all. Lately, though , they have put in some determined challenges for the tag team titles, showing that they have the skills to get it done in the ring as well. They proved it as they went toe to toe with the former tag champs . Tatum and Victory were up to their usual chicanery , but Fastball were able to weather out their attack and then mount their comeback. Horne and Thompson rallied to bowl over the opposition, squashing Tatum with the Fastball Special (Rocket Launcher). No doubt about it, Fastball have arrived .

Jerry Lynn vs. Ultimo Dragon

Jerry Lynn is another wrestler whose name got more notice after some high profile title shots, in this case the Light Heavyweight Title, but after coming close to taking the belt, he has been a long time waiting for another crack at the bell. Tonight, he would have a high profile shot at former champion Ultimo Dragon, and you could tell that becoming the top contender was very much on his mind. The two put on an incredible bout, blending speed and skill, until Lynn was able to block an attempted Dragon Bomb, then hit his own package piledriver to score the one two three. The Lightning Kid would have no choice but to give Lynn another shot.

Randy Savage & The New Foundation vs. Brian Lee & The Oregon Wrecking Crew (David Young & Gary Albright)

A number of storylines at play in this match. The top headline would of course be the heated feud between Savage and Lee. At the same time, the New Foundation are being forced to adapt to the changing tides of the Pacific Tag Team division since both Hart and Neidhart were last in PCW. Meanwhile, the OWC are fighting to show that they are still a force to be reckoned with since losing the Golden State tag titles and the changes in the Terror Collective. While the Macho Man and the Bulldozer went at it fist and fire, the other competitors got down to it in a tight and fierce tag battle. Neidhart was able to bowl Young over with a huge tackle, locking him in the Anvilizer to avenge his loss to Young from a couple of weeks before. Regardless, this isn't likely to be the last time the OWC and the New Foundation fight to break into the upper ranks of the tag division.

Shane Douglas vs. Stevie Richards

Douglas' loss of the California Title at Aloha Spectacular to Rob Van Dam is becoming more and more of a distant memory. The Pittsburgh native has bounced back with an incredible run of victories, putting him on a bullet train to a rematch with RVD. But first , he would have to get past Dancin' Stevie Richards. Despite his off beat personality, Richards has surprisingly developed into a clutch player for the Playboy Club, and Douglas certainly had his hands full with the Dancing Fool. Just when Douglas thought he had Richards down for the count, Richards would bounce back and catch him with a flurry of shots. Douglas was able to just barely dodge the Stevie Kick, and then closed the gap to catch him with the Belly To Belly Suplex for the one. Another impressive win. Next Stop : San Diego Battleground and Rob Van Dam .

David Cash & Jason Jett vs. Rob Van Dam & Sabu

RVD did not have a title defense, rather he would be teaming up with his brother in chaos Sabu against the Money Train . Cash and Jett are also coming out of the shadows as a duo determined not to be overlooked, having stood their ground against the Hexagon last week , and matched the opposition step for step. It looked like they might just pulled out the upset when Jett hit a sit out power bomb on Sabu, but RVD tossed Cash over the top rope then broke up the pinfall with a spin kick to the face of Jett. He then brought in a ringside table on which he set up Jett, and Sabu came off the top with a moonsault through the table for the win. The Hexagon had won in their traditional style, but the Money Train made sure that they had to pay for it.

The Eagle vs. Scotty The Body

The Eagle is another wrestler experiencing a turnaround . He was in rough shape not too long ago, having lost both the Golden State Tag Team Titles and his FoJ partner, with the Playboy Club taking glee in tormenting him. With the arrival of the Scorpion, Special Forces have risen to the gauntlet that the Club have thrown down. Scorpion was in his corner for this match, while Stevie Richards was backing up Scotty. Scorpion kept a watchful eye on Stevie throughout, and every time Stevie tried to make his presence felt, he found the Scorpion there to shut it down. Stevie finally leapt into the ring, but the Scorpion was in hot pursuit, and in the ensuing confusion, the Eagle caught Scotty with a diving clothesline for the victory. An bit of a chaotic win, but one that should earn Special Forces a shot at the Gold State titles.

Pacific Tag Team Title Match : The Midnight Express © vs. The Serial Thrillaz

As one can imagine, the Midnight Express have taken to the loosening of PCW rule enforcement like the proverbial ducks to water . The Serial Thrillaz , curiously, seem to be trying to follow their lead and even surpass them, skirting the regulations and sneaking in as many cheap shots as possible. The result was a wild match , and with Fit Finlay nowhere near the ring, there was no controlling influence on Maverick and Helms . Helms seemed like it would all pay off when he caught Lane in a rollup, but before the ref could go for the count,  Eaton jacked the ref in the back of the head with Cornette's tennis racquet. In the brawl that followed, Eaton tossed the racquet into the arms of Maverick, and Cornette dragged the ref to his feet and pointed to them. Mistakenly assuming that it was the Thrillaz who attacked him, the ref called for the DQ, giving the win to the Express. If the Thrillaz were going to take the dirty back road, they have a ways to go before they catch up to the masters.

Tournament Of Lions Finals : Michael Modest vs. Alex Wright

The previous two matches were high on craziness, but this one promised the fans a clean scientific match . Both of these wrestlers are in their rookie year, but have had good teachers and progressed all the way to the finals of the Tournament Of Lions . The Serial Thrillaz were absent from the side of Modest, but Fit Finlay was there to provide encouragement, and, oddly, partway through the match, PCO led the Money Train to the ring, not to the ring but to provide a voice of support for their prior rivals. The Sinister Minister brought more a shrill, nagging voice from the ring, but it wasn't long before Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko came down to cheer on their friend, with a stern look from Malenko shutting down the SinMin's hectoring. Modest and Wright treated the crowd to an exciting technical battle, and the fans were at the edge of their seats with every move that could change the course of the match. Wright came very close to taking it when he had Modest set up for the over the shoulder neckbreaker, but Modest blocked it, countered with a waistlock then hit the German Suplex, one of Wright's own finshers, for the win. Modest took the victory, the title of overall victor in the Tournament, and the half million dollars. His supporters, both in the stands and at ringside, were jubilant, and his fellow wrestlers came into the ring to congratulate him. Wright was crestfallen, but Malenko and Guerrero consoled him, telling him he had put in an incredible effort while the Sinister Minister fumed in the background. At some point , the Serial Thrillaz showed up to the ring, but had sullen expressions, only giving a cursory congratulations to their partner. In spite of this sour note, it was a big win for Modest, and he can be proud of everything he has accomplished .

Pacific Television Title Match : Big Bully Busick © vs. Dean Malenko

Big Bully Busick has had an incredible reign as TV champ, one that has been both long and dominant. Lately, though, it seems like the Man From Powerhouse Hill may be running out of road as champion. Increasingly close challenges, as well as some nagging injuries, have been making his reign more and more of a struggle. Walking into this challenge with a bandaged shoulder is bad news under any circumstances, but especially bad facing the man of a thousand holds. The Iceman was as merciless as his name would imply, targeting the shoulder and going after it relentlessly. Big Bully was clearly in a lot of pain, but you could see the determination as he clearly made the decision to brute force his way out of his predicament. With his right arm compromised, but he landed heavy punches with his left, and some hard kicks when he had Malenko trapped in the corner. The Iceman battled back, but Busick was able to catch him coming off the ropes with a left arm clothesline. Busick immediately pounced, unleashing a brutal variation of the Garvin Stomp. With Malenko compromised, the champ was able to wrap him up in the Bully Bender (Stump Puller). With Busick's full weight on top of him, Malenko was unable to escape , and had no choice but to tap out. A narrow escape for Busick, but one has to wonder just how much longer he could carry on.

Pacific Heavyweight Title Match : Toshiaki Kawada © vs. Steve Williams

This would be the climax to an incredible evening , with Dr. Death getting a rematch for the top title. Williams was unable to wrest the title from around the waist of Kawada at Phoenix Firestorm, but has since pulled off a run of crushing victories to earn another shot. Williams came out strong against the Japanese star, knocking him over with some big tackles and clotheslines. Kawada fired back, but it wasn't long before Williams opened up with his power offense. Getting hit with jarring slams and suplexes, Kawada was showing increase wear and tear as Williams chipped away. Kawada was able to pull off a few rallies, but Williams was clearly controlling the pace of the match until Mike Awesome made his way to ringside. When Kawada whipped Williams into the ropes, Awesome yanked down the top rope, causing Dr. Death to tumble out of the ring. Williams was stunned by the fall, but then Awesome levelled him with a mighty lariat. Williams was unable to make it back into the ring, and Kawada won the match by countout. A dirty win, but Kawada was still champ.
